Really you should make your girl smile every day, but St. Valentine's day is considered really special by the romantics - and the not so romantic amongst us. It's the day of the year when women especially expect to wooed and treated to loving gifts no matter how small or expensive. Some people just aren't romantic, they forget about the big day and can't understand what all of the fuss is about. That's more likely to be men who aren't romantic - or don't want to be seen to be romantic. What they don't understand is that treating their lady to something special any day of the year will win them lots of good times but forget Valentines they are in the doghouse and will stay there until they do something to make up for it. That something will probably be more costly or take more effort than what they forgot in the first place. Some of us women like to think that romance is soppy and pretend that we don't care if we are forgotten about on February 14th, but we do care really. Underneath there is that little part of us that feels hurt if we are forgotten. However, it doesn't take much to make us feel special if you go about it the right way.If you are going through hard times its nice to get looked after, breakfast in bed, dinner for two, a candlelit bubble bath for two and a bottle of Cava can be memorable. Roses are the flower of love but they are really expensive come Valentine's day. The good thing about it is that a single red rose is deemed to be more romantic so it won't cost as much as a bunch would - great for the hard up or even cheap skates. You can even get a silk red rose in a presentation box, but don't do what my cousin did. He bought his wife a single silk red rose in 2003, gave her the same one again in 2004 and 2005, she didn't realise until she looked for the 2 from the previous years to display all together in a new china vase. He had to own up to his miserly ways and since then Valentine's day has been a major expense for him, but he has realised that it's money well spent because the returns can be far greater.I work in a store that sells Valentine's day cards and every year we get mainly men coming in at the last minute, desperate to find something to keep their women happy. Usually the joke cards are all that we've got left at the end. Why they make joke Valentine's day cards I'll never know. They can be hurtful to the recipient so not very nice. It's interesting to see just who does buy cards for their loved ones. Last year I was astonished to sell a particularly romantic card to an elderly gentleman who shops with his wife regularly. Both must be in their 80s and they argue and bicker in every aisle of the shop, Sometimes they get quite loud and you hover around them just in case they need breaking apart - it gets that loud. Yet you sort of know that they have loved each other for a lot of years and his wife is still his sweetheart. You get schoolkids buying them on their way to school. You know that they will write things in such as 'from your secret admirer'. They might be jokes, they might be serious, but an awful lot of us spend a huge amount of time trying to figure out who wants us to be their Valentine.

Some customers buy more than one card, leaving us wondering what they are up to. I had to laugh one year when a guy bought 5 and a few weeks later his girlfriend Laura told us that she had found out that he was seeing another woman because of a Valentine's day card. Laura had gone to one of those parties that sells jewellery with a friend. They got there early and while they were waiting for it to begin Laura was casually looking at the Valentine's Day card displayed on the mantle. She recognised the writing and finished with him. I never told her about the rest of the cards that he had bought. My worst Valentine's day gift was from my ex husband. I was expecting something really special that year because his brother was whisking his wife off for a romantic weekend in Rome. I was hoping that he would follow his brother's example and whisk me off somewhere - even if it was just to dinner in a nice restaurant. The big day arrived and he romantically gave me a fiver to go and buy my own card. Of course I told him where to shove it.My sweetest but most embarrassing Valentine's day gift was a bunch of flowers with a teddy bear. I worked for a company with several hundred employees and watched on enviously as bunches and baskets of flowers kept arriving at my work place. I told myself that I didn't want any because I would feel embarrassed, but I did really.Towards the end of the afternoon I heard one of my workmates angrily telling her husband over the phone that he shouldn't have wasted so much money on flowers when they were trying to save up. She got off the phone and told me that her husband had denied buying the gift but she couldn't understand why he was lying. I asked to look at the card that had come with the present and recognised the writing on it as from my boyfriend. At first she couldn't figure out why my boyfriend was sending her flowers until I reminded her that our names were the same and that they were meant for me.My best Valentine's day gift was an engagement ring from my boyfriend - now that really did make me smile. You can find some great relationship advice and a free love meter when you check out the love tips site.
