WESLEY UMC NEWS – JULY, 2017
MAKER FUN FACTORY VBS – JULY 9 THROUGH 13!
This year’s VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will be
Maker Fun Factory! We will have a Family Fun Kick-
off on Sunday, July 9 from 4 – 8PM. There will be
inflatables, games, food and a dunk tank! Monday
through Thursday VBS will be held from 6 – 8PM.
Attending Maker Fun Factory will help kids discover
they are lovingly crafted by God. On this interactive
adventure, curious kids become hands-on inventors and
experience God, the Ultimate Maker, in new and creative
ways. Kids will learn one important Bible point each day,
which will be reinforced through Bible adventures, key
Bible verses, songs, snacks and hands-on explorations.
Registration and volunteer forms are available on the
church website: www.charlestonwesley.org.
VBS SET BUILDERS AND DECORATORS NEEDED!
If you are handy with a hammer and
saw OR if you like to decorate,
please consider giving a few hours of
your time to help build and decorate
sets for this year's Maker Fun Factory VBS! Building is currently
taking place at the church days and
evenings through July 7. If you are
willing to help OR need more
information, contact Juliane Sharp at
PRAY FOR OUR ASP TEAM
On Sunday, July 16, 59 youth and
adults are leaving for a week of work

greatly appreciated!

DAVE RAMSEY’S FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY
We all need a plan for our money. Financial
Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches
God's ways of handling money. Through video
teaching, class discussions and interactive small
group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical
steps to get from where you are to where
you've dreamed you could be. This plan will
show you how to get rid of debt, manage your
money, spend and save wisely, and much
more! FPU classes meet for around an hour
and a half each week for nine weeks, beginning
Tuesday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the WUMC
Parlor. Childcare will be available for those
who need it. The cost of the class materials is
$93. This is a one-time membership fee; once
you have purchased a membership, you can
return to classes or the website as often as you
want. For more information or to learn how
you can be a part of this class, talk with Nancy
Marlow in the church office (217-345-3917) or
e-mail her at [email protected];
you can also visit the class website at
www.daveramsey.com/fpu/locations/class/1

Our sympathy is expressed to
Amy Lynch on the death of her mother
Carol Lynch on June 7, 2017.
DO YOU HAVE THE LATEST ACCESSORY?
Please be sure to wear your
nametag on Sunday mornings! It’s
très chic 😉 If you need a
nametag, check the “I’d like to
receive a nametag” box on the
front of your Making Connections card. The
following Sunday your tag will be located on
the appropriate rack just outside the sanctuary
entrance. Make a fashion statement while
helping us get to know you at the same time.
Magnifique!
Thanks to those
of you who
have submitted
your birthdays
for the Wesley
UMC database.
It’s been very helpful! If we do not have your
birthdate, wedding anniversary, or correct
phone number (including you mobile number)
and/or address, you can let us know by writing
it on the “Prayer Requests/Comments” section
of your Making Connections card on Sunday
morning, or you may call the church office at
217-345-3917, or email Rosalie Addison at
[email protected]. Thanks for
helping us stay up-to-date!

HALF TRUTHS STUDY
• Everything happens for a reason.
• God helps those who help themselves.
• God won’t give you more than you can
handle.
• God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
• Love the sinner, hate the sin.
They are simple phrases. They sound
Christian – like something you might find in
the Bible. We've all heard these words;
perhaps we've even spoken them. They
capture some element of truth, yet they
miss the point in important ways. We invite
you to a DVD-based
study of the Adam
Hamilton resource
"Half Truths" during
Sunday School time in
Room 129. Join us as Rev.
Hamilton searches for the whole truth
by comparing common Christian sayings
with the wisdom found in scripture. For
more information on the study, visit:
http://www.adamhamilton.org/books/ite
m/9781501813870.
MEMBERSHIP CLASS
Have you been attending Wesley UMC for a
while? Do you feel it’s time to join our
membership? Rev. Siwckard will be leading a
Membership Class at 2:00PM on Sunday, July
23 in the Wesley Parlor. Participants will learn
about United Methodism in general and more
about Wesley UMC in particular. Please mark
your calendar and plan on joining us for this
time of learning.
Singers and musicians: sign up to provide music
for worship this summer by using the sign-up
sheet on the table in the sanctuary hallway on
Sunday mornings! You may also sign-up by
calling Elizabeth in the church office at 217-
345-3917, or you can email her at
[email protected]. Singers,
instrumentalists, groups, solos, etc. are all
welcome.
ALSO – as in past summers, the Second Sunday
Singers are singing at the 8:30 service on the
second Sunday of July (9) and August (13). All
singers age high school and older are welcome!
The group meets in the choir room at 8:00AM,
rehearses a song, then sings at the 8:30 service.
Mark your calendar and come sing with us!

THANKS TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HELPED “CHANGE THE WORLD”
ON SATURDAY, JUNE 3!
Our Helping Hands crew was rained out on the
original Change the World weekend, but that
didn’t stop them from completing their tasks
on Saturday, June 3! Folks gathered to clean
gutters and windows, trim and plant and do
some yard maintenance chores, and more for
Wesley folks who can no longer perform these
tasks themselves. Thanks to our volunteers as
they represented not just WUMC, but were
Christ’s hands and feet to those in need of
help!
SUMMER STRESS SLOWING
YOU DOWN?
We like to think of
summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time.
But hurts, struggles, crises, and problems don’t
take a vacation. Many times, our difficulties
seem even worse during the summer because
everyone else seems to be enjoying life while
you are feeling down. If you are experiencing a
difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, or
relationally—you don’t have to suffer alone.
Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers,
ready to listen, care for and encourage you,
pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one
Christian care to help you through whatever it
is that you are facing. Men are matched with
male Stephen Ministers, and women are
matched with female Stephen Ministers. It’s
free. It’s confidential. And it will make a
difference in your life! To find out more about
Stephen Ministry for you or someone you
know, talk with Nancy Marlow or e-mail her at
[email protected]. Our Stephen
Ministers are there to care about you!
Happy July birthday to the following Wesley folks!

JULY MISSION PROJECT: UMCOR SCHOOL BAGS
The Missions Ministry Team has designated
UMCOR School Kits as our July Mission Project.
In some countries, children don't have books or
school supplies. Many have no classrooms.
Classes are held in inadequate or half-
destroyed buildings, tents or even in the open
air. School kits might be these children's only
educational resources.
WHEN SHOPPING FOR JULY MISSION SCHOOL
SUPPLIES, please follow this UMCOR School
Bag Shopping List:
3 spiral notebooks (not multi-subject)
6 unsharpened pencils with erasers (no
advertising)
1 hand held pencil sharpener (1” or
bigger)
1 ruler 12” long, with metric, (hard or
flexible)
1 box of 24 Crayola crayons
1 pair round tip scissors (no plastic
scissors)
Monetary gifts will be used to cover shipping
expenses from Midwest Mission Distribution
Center where the school bags are checked and
filled for shipping to overseas locations. This
usually totals about $150. Any contributions
over $150 will be used to buy additional school
supplies.
You can write a check to Wesley UMC with
School Bags on the memo line or use the blue
Mission envelope in the hymnal rack. You can
also donate online by going to visit our website
at charlestonwesley.org and click on the
$ button at the bottom of the page. Once
again, thank you very much for your support.
A gift was given to the
Memorial Fund in
memory of
Marie Clark,
Cherie's Sutliff's
mother.
Congratulations to
Dylan Doughty and Kaylie Pruett
who were married in the
Wesley sanctuary
on May 27, 2017,
and to
Quintin Davis &
Raquel Roberts - Hamilton
married in St. Louis
on June 17, 2017.

PRAYER SHAWLS & SQUARES
ARE AVAILABLE
Wesley UMC is blessed to have an active group
of knitters and crocheters (and even quilters!)
who keep us supplied with prayer shawls and
prayer squares. If you would like a shawl or
square to deliver to someone who needs a
“hug” from our church, please stop by the
church office during the week to pick one up.
There is no charge for shawls or squares. We
will also give you an info sheet containing a
blessing and washing instructions.
In addition to shawls and squares, Pastor Janice
has books for those who are grieving and those
who have been diagnosed with cancer. We also
have a limited number of hand crosses. Please
speak with Pastor Janice if you are interested in
obtaining or giving any of these resources.
NEW SUNDAY
MORNING STUDY
The Voices Sunday school class has recently
begun watching and discussing the DVD
series titled, “Ancient Roads: From Christ to
Constantine,” narrated by historian Jonathan
Phillips. In it, he traces the early history of
Christianity as it spread from its roots in
Ancient Israel through seven countries in
Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East,
culminating with the Council of Nicaea in the
year 325 AD. If this sounds interesting to you,
please join them in the church library (Room
108) during the Sunday School hour. All are
welcome!
STUDY RESOURCES AVAILABLE
If you are part of an
Adult Sunday School
class or other group
looking for a new book
or Bible study resource,
please stop by Rosalie
Addison’s office during
the week to see what the church currently has
available. Many of the studies are DVD based,
and come with leader guides, so are easy to
lead. If there is a specific study you are looking
for but Wesley does not have it, we can check
to see if the United Media Resource Center of
our Conference carries it. If they have it, it can
be borrowed free of charge. We can also order
resources from Cokesbury or Amazon for you.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
The award-winning Farm
Hands are returning to
Wesley UMC! They will be
in concert at 6:00PM on
Saturday, August 12. Ice
cream, fun and games will
happen before the concert. If you are
interested in helping with this event, contact
the church office. More information soon!
