Helping the rural people of Gulf & Western Province through YWAM

Steamships announced a four year partnership with YWAM Medi-

cal Ships Australia (YWAM MSA) to deliver health services in

rural and remote parts of the country.

YWAM MSA is actively developing communities by addressing the

health care and training needs in Papua New Guinea

(PNG) alongside the priorities of the PNG National Health Plan and

AusAID’s commitment to the UN’s Millennium Development

Goals.

Since 2010, YWAM MSA has provided 93,354 training and health

outcomes in PNG; including primary health care, childhood immu-

nisations, dentistry, optometry, ophthalmology and education in

association with key stakeholders and partners.

Through the new partnership, Steamships will be assisting with

K400, 000 annually towards the medical program. In addition to the

financial support, the Pacific Link (Medical boat) will be berthing at

the Steamships Coastal Shipping (MES) wharf after each outreach

in the Gulf and Western Province.

At hand to make the presentation was Steamships Trading Com-

pany’s chairman, Bill Rothery and Sam Swire from the Swire

Group. Mr Rothery and Mr Swire were taken on a tour around the

boat to see facilities that YWAM used during their outreaches in the

two provinces.

Mr Rothery said, “Steamships has been assisting YWAM MSA

since last year in providing medical services along the Gulf and

Western Provinces and from the number of treatments being re-

corded we can see the difference this medical outreach is making.

“In many instances it can take someone needing urgent medical care

five days of walking to reach a heath centre and we know these

facilities are often lacking vital supplies and equipment.

“YWAM have been able to reach out into these remote areas and

provide not only medical

treatments, but distribute medicines and help their PNG counter-

parts learn new techniques by working alongside them.

“The YWAM program is making a positive contribution and we are

proud to lend our support for the next four years, and we would like

to encourage Government and other corporate organisations to get

behind the great efforts that YWAM and its team of devoted volun-

teers are making.

“We are happy that through our support we are able to help the

people living in the rural areas of Gulf and Western Province have

access to basic health services through YWAM, ” Mr Rothery

stated.

YWAM MSA CEO, Ken Mulligan states; “Steamships support of

the project has been wonderful, and we look forward to continuing

to develop the partnership.”

Shipping gives to Cancer Relief Society

August is the Daffodil month and Steamships Shipping

took the lead in assisting the Port Moresby Cancer Relief

Society (POMCRS) with the selling of the daffodil yellow

ribbons.

The staff from shipping seeing that it was the daffodil

month, took to buying the pins and wearing them to work

as a sign of support for CRS.

And Steamships Shipping Staff took the initiative to help

with this cause by donating cash voluntarily in receipt of

a Daffodil Pin.

Staff donated K276.00 from their pockets while the

Steamships Shipping donated K700.00. In total, a CHQ of

K976.00 was presented to Port Moresby Cancer Relief

Society Representative, Ms. Ascenate Asi (Office Man-

ager) over lunch at Royal Papua Yacht Club on Tuesday

28th August 2012. Ms. Ascenate together with her assis-

tant, Events Coordinator, Ms. Rebekah were so thankful

for the extra effort that Steamships Shipping Staff &

Management put in for the donation and hoped that

there will be more kind donations as such from the Ship-

ping Group as well the Steamships Group.

All proceeds will go towards the expenses of the Oncology

Ward of Children & Women's wards at the Port Mo-

resby General Hospital."

POM CRS will be hosting the Pacific MMI Pink Ribbon

Brunch next month at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The theme for this year is, ‘Promoting early prevention

and detection of breast cancer can save a life’.

nate Asi receiving the cheque from Steamships Shipping’s sponsorship

committee member, Susanne Sere.

Consort Express Lines (CEL) sees Physical Education (PE) as a

vital component of the education curriculum and helps maintain

the health and fitness of students in school.

Because of that CEL has commenced a School Sports Project

where it supplies sports equipments to schools so the schools can

carry out its PE programs with adequate supply of resources.

CEL nominated 15 High School in the country’s 12 Major Ports

which includes, Lae, Port Moresy & Rabaul where CEL Re-

gional Offices are located and Alotau, Vanimo, Wewak, Ma-

dang, Kavieng, Kimbe, Popondetta, Buka & Kieta.

The School Sports Project was created to enhance the school’s

resources because there are times PE lessons are not carried out

due to no or limited resources.

This project is currently being done in collaboration with Practi-

cal Education (PE) teachers.

Its recent presentation was done at the Bugandi Secondary

school and Lae Provincial High School.

Bugandi has 1850 Students while Lae Province High has 1350

and that is a lot of students to maintain in the way of sports.

As such CEL felt the contribution would further reduce the

stress on schools and allow them to conduct better PE programs

more effectively.

CEL is committed to the communities in which they do business

in, both as a service provider and a supporter of community

development.

HSS&E Portal to replace Safeguard System

As you may be aware, Steamships Trading Company is in the

process of adopting a new web based application called the

“HSSE Portal”, which will replace the current “Safeguard Sys-

tem” that we have in place. This article is to introduce to you this

new HSSE Management System as it will soon be launched.

The HSSE Portal is a web browser based application for all

employees of Steamships. Its core function is to improve over-

all HSSE standards across the Group. The objective of the por-

tal is to improve the visibility and manageability of all aspects

of HSSE within the organization as part of Steamships initia-

tive to become an “Employer of Choice” within Papua New

Guinea. The initial application was designed with a data struc-

ture compatible with the future aims of this project.

Dr. Notes Solutions has been responsible for all development

services component of this project which includes the work-

shoping, development and deployment of the HSSE System

systems as per the proposal document from Steamships. The

scope of work covers the development of a web based applica-

tion called the HSSE Portal that run on Steamships existing IT

infrastructure to provide its employees access to functionality

outlined in the followings section mentioned below.

On the HSSE Portal, online forms are used to capture informa-

tion from employees which relates to any particular HSSE

process. This can be an incident report, or inspection audit, or

corrective actions reporting, etc. The forms are built to be user

friendly. Earlier this year, a Test HSSE Portal has been in-

stalled for the HSSE Team at STC Head Office to run through

several tests of the different modules. This has been going on

for a couple of months since then, with couple of adjustments

yet to be made. Safeguard System will eventually be done

away with, but we expect to run in parallel with the new HSSE

Portal for a month just to keep all the HSSE Managers and

Coordinators to continue enter data on both systems until they

are fully aware with all the modules.

The HSS&E team has been testing the new HSSE System, for

that is soon to be launched and integrated into the Steamships

Trading Company’s Divisions. This new risk management sys-

tem is user friendly and we expect all divisional HSSE Repre-

sentative to interact with once it’s being introduced to them.

The system has 7 components as can be shown below on the

compass figure.

SHIPPING

Agutoi Chief does first reefer service to Daru

Steamships Coastal Shipping vessel for the first

time did reefer service to the Daru Port.

This new service upgrade has allowed for the peo-

ple of Western Province to have access to chilled

and frozen good on a regular basis.

Despite being a secondary port, the facilities are run

down and the landing crafts that had been traveling

there had to operate under such challenging condi-

tions.

Since last year, dumb barges have been making

trips to the Daru port only carrying dry goods.

Two months ago, Agutoi chief was equipped with

the plugs to enable a reefer container to be loaded

onto the vessel and has been carrying reefer con-

tainers on its trips to Daru.

Since then, Agutoi Chief has been carrying reefers

to the port of Daru.

Coastal Shipping has been servicing the people of

Daru on a monthly basis with two trips by the dumb

barges and two to three trips by the landing craft,

Agutoi Chief.

Three crews members of Coastal Shipping have passed their oral

exams.

Timothy Giti, Henry Kidama & Sarto Leonard sat for their oral

exams and achieved certificates Master Class 3, Mate Class 3 &

Master Class 5.

The management and staff of Coastal Shipping would like to Con-

gratulate the three men on passing their Oral Exams.

Huon Gulf & Melo staff undergo Fire Training

Staff from the Melanesian Hotel and

Huon Gulf Hotel in the Morobe Prov-

ince took time out to undergo a fire

training session.

The session was done by inspector

Amia from the Lae Fire Services.

The staff were trained on how to con-

tain fire if fire broke out and most

importantly, the use and importance

of different fire extinguishers.

The staff were so happy to be thought

these things that they were very inter-

active asking a lot of questions want-

ing to know more about fire fighting.

The practical drill gave the chance for

most staff in each department to get a

feel on how to put out a fire using the

fire extinguishers and the fire blanket.

The drill took place outside at the car

park of the Huon Gulf Hotel.

Lae Project update: SVS Supermarket

Putting a smile on their faces

Pacific Palms Property staff visited the Maternity Ward at Port Moresby General Hos-

pital last Saturday, August 25, as part of the company’s plan to foster good relation-

ship in the community. The visit was to coincide with International Breast Feeding

Week which was from August 1 - 7, but was delayed until then.

The staff and management all contributed and collected almost K700.00 and bought

the gifts which included powder milk, fruits, baby’s diapers and mother’s maternity

The sister in charge of the ward, Mrs. Bamo, was very happy and thankful to the

PacificPalms Property team for such a thoughtful and caring act. She stated that the

females who benefited could be your own employee, or a wife, mother, sister or

daughter, and was hoping that other companies would follow this example and do the

same in helping our mothers in the community.

building has now been moved to further to
