Netflix’s documentary Making aMurderer is the latest true crime
spectacle. Following HBO’s miniseriesThe Jinx and the investigative podcastSerial Season 1, Netflix’s 10‐episodedocuseries was bound to catch the
attention those who want an inside lookat crime investigations.
Making a Murderer, however, is unique.10 years in the making, it details
Wisconsin native Steven Avery’s 2005murder trial.
Shortly after Avery’s release fromprison, where he’d spent 18 years for arape he did not commit, two years afterbeing exonerated he was then accusedof killing photographer Teresa Halbach.
The documentarians faced greatresistance during their decade‐longpursuit, and it’s easy to see why.
