Computational Thinking Computational thinking involves a set of problem-solving skills and techniques that software engineers use to write programs that underlie the computer applications you use such as search, email, and maps. It can be used to algorithmically solve complicated problems of scale. An algorithm is a precise, systematic method for producing a specified result. It is a familiar concept that we use without realizing or thinking, and we use and invent algorithms all the time to solve our problems.

In Lab 1, I got to create my own career portfolio by using Notepad++ program. I learned to use html tags to set up my webpage, adding colored texts and pictures to make it look more attractive. Finally, I made my webpage available to the world by putting it online using Secure File Transfer Client. In Lab3, I learned about relative and absolute addressing used to direct the click to the file that I linked it to. I also made my own CSE3 page that holds all the files I create in labs.

Desktop Publishing with MS Word

Desktop publishing is the creation of documents using page layout skills on a personal computer. In Lab 2, I learned to use many tools in Microsoft Word 2010 to create my document. Some of these tools include creating a table of contents, inserting textboxes and images into the document, inserting page numbers, and adding a bibliography. In the end, I was able to create a stunning page of my career plan.

Presentation of Information with MS PowerPoint

Excel is a useful tool for managing, manipulating, and analyzing financial data. For this lab, I was asked to “invest” into five companies and watch the fluctuation of stocks in the period of three weeks. I learned to put all my data into a neatly arranged table using Excel. I also learned to compute basic mathematics easily by using the auto-fill function of Excel. Last but not least, I learned to insert a visual using graphs and pie chart.

Dynamic Webpage Programming with JavaScript

In Lab 4, I learned to use spreadsheet to chart my financial information. I created my annual budget for my projected career, which includes my income, expenses, and spending money. In one column I have my source of income, in another column I have my living expenses including housing, food, clothing, transportation, etc… Using the Excel formulas, I was able to calculate my weekly, monthly, and yearly income and expenses, as well as taxes This is very helpful for me to see that with my future career, I will be able to afford a comfortable life.

Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. For this lab, I had to create methods for my frogs to jump down the water and escape from the eagle. I really enjoyed this lab because I got learn the basics in making an animation.

In the beginning of the class, I learned to use html to make webpages. However, the webpage that I made was not interactive. Towards the end of the lab I was introduced to JavaScript. JavaScript is an object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers. Using Java Script, I made a web page where I could click buttons to order Triton shirts as well as play blackjack. I was also able to insert an alert message that I have seen on many other websites.
