Invention Design Making
Invention
Idea > drawing > patent
idea > mockup*> protect> promote > sell > manufacture > distribute *non-functional
Design
Design.
Who are makers? Computer Scientists with an interest in products. too rarely Product designers with an interest in computer science.
Who are makers? People who understand the internet as a tool. too often People who understand the internet as a window display.
Making tools.

Arduino Nike + Sparkfun Foundry Group Wired Kickstarter Springboard, Haxl8r, TSB TechStars /RGA
Making
Idea > prototype* > promote > fund> manufacture > distribute *minimum viable functionality
Making.
An open process. The most valuable ideas are developed through experimentation.
Plants. Botanicalls. 2007, ITP
Plants. EasyBloom Moistly Parrot Koubachi Plantlink
Wifi-connected lightbulbs. When Phillips launched Hue, there were 6 wifi-connected blubs projects on Kickstarter.
To do Design should be an open & flexible process of learning. Design should be collaborative by default.
The difference? The value is in the doing, not the idea. The fact that you can design for other people.
Designing for real problems.
