STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Practice Makes Perfect at North Gym

One of the most unique aspects of Maryland’s women’s gymnastics team isthe nature of its strength and conditioning program “We have a vigorous weightprogram ” says head coach Bob Nelligan “We’re physically more tough and thesupport staff that’s allowing us to do this should be applauded”

The team’s strength and conditioning coach Barry Kagan has been a part of Maryland’s strength andconditioning program since !!9 and has worked withthe gymnasts for the last six years

According to Kagan the gymnastics weight train%ing program is one that is constantly changing “It’s con%tinuously adapting depending on the individual needsof the current team ” said Kagan

The primary goal of the team’s program is injuryprevention Next the weight program strives to enhanceeach gymnasts’ performance “Most gymnastics pro%grams take a fairly conservative approach doing mod%

erate weight training ” said Kagan “We take a very balanced approach empha%sizing strength over muscular endurance as most of the other programs do”

The team begins lifting in September upon returning to campus The firsttwo weeks are comprised of a learning/reacquaintance phase “Most gymnastsdon’t lift in the style that we do ” said Kagan “We want to make sure they areready to take on the more complicated lifts”

After the two%week introductory period the team progresses into a com%plex training program which involves several Olympic%style lifts The main lowerbody exercise is the squat exercise to enhance lower body stability For upperbody training the women use dumbbells rather than bars to alleviate some ofthe stress on the shoulders The athletes also train aerobically in September andOctober to prepare for full routines

“In season our approach becomes more of a maintenance phase ” said Kagan“We alternate the daily intensity of the lifts by organizing around the meet sched%ule” The women lift as a team twice a week with occasional conditioning circuitsin the gym

As for strength%to%body weight ratio the gymnasts are the “strongest womenin the department ” said Kagan

The Terrapins are fortunate to train in two of the premier weight trainingfacilities in the country Conveniently located in the Gossett Football Team Houseat Byrd Stadium this facility has excellent aesthetic appeal with two magnifi%

cent skylights and large windows overlooking the playing field at Byrd StadiumThe Terps’ spacious weight room includes square feet of functional floorspace with two elevated offices that are easily accessible to the training floor

This season Maryland has begun to train in the spacious brand%new state%of%the%art weight room in Comcast Center

Maryland gymnasts train with some of the best equipment available in%cluding pounds of customized York free weights seven pieces of Keiserprogressive air resistance machines and a full line of Hammer strength equip%ment The weight complex also features immense self%contained rack stations Olympic lifting platforms with Eleiko bumper plates and upper body pressingstations

The Maryland gymnastics team practices in the North Gym located near the Cam%pus Recreation Center North Gym is a state of the art gymnastics facility thatcovers ? square feet There are two spring floor exercise mats which lie side%by%side with a travelling overhead spotting rig used for vaulting as well as floorexercise There are spotting belts that are placed above the uneven bars the singlerail bar and the trampolines The single rail bar tumbling strip and vaulting areaare all connected into or onto brand new fitted Tiffin resi pits Twenty centimetermats surround AAI uneven bars and four new AAI Elite series balance beams Oneof the most attractive features of the practice facility is the lighting which is softand leaves no shadows anywhere in the gym Finally there is a glassed%in tram%poline room with four%string bed Goliath tramps surrounded by spotting plat%forms and %inch landing mats

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

When C D “Dan” Mote Jr became the !th president of the University of Maryland on Sept !!? he proclaimed it a university “on the move” Five years later under his guidance Marylandcontinues to move – at an ever%accelerating rate – on the field in the classroom in the communityand in the world

Leading a great university is a big job but it’s a role that Mote is accustomed to having spent hisentire academic career at the University of California at Berkeley where he earned all his degrees chaired one of the nation’s top%ranked departments of Mechanical Engineering and eventually be%came Vice Chancellor for University Relations before coming to Maryland

The University of Maryland is the State of Maryland’s most important asset says Mote: “Thefuture of the state depends on this university”

As president Mote is committed to making that asset even greater by nourishing a culture ofexcellence and civility across the campus providing the highest quality education for students strengthening the university’s connections with its various stakeholders building partnerships withState and national corporations and federal agencies and achieving distinction as an institution wherediscovery takes place every day and everywhere

The university’s progress can be seen in every area from its nationally%ranked programs to itsgrowing range of partnerships to its world%class state%of%the%art facilities

Quality ProgramsOver the past decade the quality of Maryland’s programs has grown by leaps and bounds In

9 the University of Maryland moved up to ?th place among public universities in US News &World Report rankings the first time it has broken into the top in its steady climb to distinctionWe currently have +! graduate and undergraduate programs and units ranked in the top " by USNews & World Report up from " eight years ago

While our academic successes have spread across the board the university has emerged as a truepowerhouse in business computer science earth sciences engineering environmental policy edu%cation and journalism Maryland is one of only public and private universities that have theirprograms in computer science mathematics physics and engineering each ranked in the top and the Robert H Smith School of Business is one of G nationally ranked in both the top BusinessFaculty in Teaching and the top Business Faculty in Research

Experts on the Maryland faculty are regularly sought by the news media for their views on awide variety of issues including political events international affairs social trends economics theenvironment science and technology

Talented StudentsOver the past years it has become a cliché to announce that each year’s new freshman class is

the most talented ever The average GPA of entering students in fall 9 is 9! while the averageSAT score is nearly 9

Not surprisingly the number of students enrolling in honors and other special programs has alsoskyrocketed in recent years Our extremely popular living%learning programs which bring togetherstudents with similar academic interests in a residential setting were ranked 9rd in the country in thelatest US News & World Report In the last academic year over G students enrolled in suchprograms as Gemstone College Park Scholars and the Hinman CEO Entrepreneurship Program

Athletic ExcellenceMote sees athletics as an integral part of the university experience Indeed athletic success more

often than not reflects academic success he notes For example all four of the teams that played inthe NCAA basketball Final Four including Maryland are members of the prestigious Associationof American Universities the organization that comprises the leading research and academic universi%ties in North America “That’s no accident ” Mote says “Institutions that are committed to excellencetend to be excellent in every endeavor Our successes in basketball lacrosse and other sports reflectsour culture of quality as much as our successes in engineering business education and journalism”
