When you read a book, do you think that the illustrator and author worked together?Sometimes that happens. But creating books isn’t always like that. In fact, the process of

making a book might surprise you. Often the author and illustrator never even talk

to each other!

When writing a story, the author may give ideas about pictures to the illustrator.

But sometimes the story is about something familiar to the illustrator, something that he

or she has experienced in the past.

For example, Mice and Beans is about a party. Joe Cepeda remembered occasions when his

family had parties.They were to celebrate special events.

He used his memories, his thoughts of those past events, to draw the pictures.

Illustrators also use their imaginations. They picture in their minds how characters

and settings might look.Being an author or illustrator may seem

glamorous. It looks so interesting and exciting, but both jobs take a lot of hard work.
