Survey results are in! We asked you about how you use the WFL and you told us that you would like more: more spaces, more options, more great service. In preparing the 2019-2023 five-year strategic plan, we collected data from observation studies, focus groups and surveys which helped inform and guide a sensible plan for renovating library space within the footprint of the existing building.

2019-2023 WFL Strategic Plan Every 5 Years, We Take Another Look The purpose of the Strategic Plan is to provide guidelines for the careful planning that allows the library to remain relevant: maintaining the high levels of service to which patrons have become accustomed, as well as ensuring that library offerings and facilities evolve to keep pace with changing needs and expectations. Although designed before the advent of the iPhone, iPad, streaming media, and the prevalence of telecommuting, the library has an open floor plan so that needed changes can be made with minimal construction.

On Sunday, June 1, 2003, a grand opening celebration for Wellesley’s new main library was attended by hundreds of community members from Wellesley and beyond. From day one, the library was a point of pride for residents and utilized heavily as a gathering place for work, play, learning, and meeting. Although our Library may still seem “new,” we have now passed the 15 year anniversary of that ribbon cutting. Outdated functionality means that our library’s “best in class” status is in jeopardy.

The Board of Library Trustees will seek design funds at the 2019 Annual Town Meeting for a practical and attractive space reallocation that will result in more small conference rooms, more appealing children’s spaces, and a flexibly furnished commons area in which to enjoy snacks, coffee, and WiFi. These renovations also address the Library’s commitment to being an active municipal participant in Town’s vibrant future, as well as the library’s robust public/private partnerships. Along with town funds, private support will play an important part in this renovation.

Originally a one-room schoolhouse, the Fells Branch Library is one of Wellesley’s oldest buildings. One teacher taught three grades of boys and girls who entered and left through separate doors. In 1923 the building became the Fells Branch Library. Now, this special building returns to its roots as an intimate learning library focused on young children. Opening in late fall 2018, the renovation will include representations of Wellesley buildings providing a fun and familiar setting in which to Explore, Imagine, and Create! Longer-range plans call for the creation of a children’s garden that will provide a place to connect with nature.

The Fells Branch Library is privately funded by the Wellesley Free Library Foundation. Additional supporters include The Fund for Wellesley, Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services/Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

RENOVATION IN PROGRESS

Library LuauThe Hills Branch Library is a busy, beloved community hub where patrons go to read, relax, and reconnect. Visit the Hills for popular materials, casual meeting space and special events.

On December 2, 20 l 7, the Hills Branch was transformed into a magical winter wonderland ... with a tropical twist. More than 150 children, parents, grandparents and caregivers enjoyed stories, songs, crafts and snacks with favorite Disney character Moana. This popular event sold out within days of tickets going on sale. All proceeds from the second-ever winter tea party benefited the WFL Foundation’s support of the Hills and Fells branch libraries.

Be part of the Fells legacy! The Fells Branch Library is privately funded. Fundraising to support the interior renovation of the Fells kicked off at the WFL Foundation Gala in April. Your support is still needed to complete the project and help maintain operation of the Early Learning Center. Gifts of any size are important. Special naming opportunities are listed below.

FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR AND TRUSTEES

Making the Connection to the Wellesley community is central to the mission of the Wellesley Free Library (WFL). We listen to your suggestions, track usage and monitor national trends to ensure that the WFL serves Wellesley in the best possible manner. Our recently completed Strategic Plan 2019-2023 reflects all this input, and now begins the work to implement the goals set out in that document.

Nearly 1000 people a day come through the doors of the WFL. There have been enormous increases in circulation, programs and attendance. As the Library works to meet the needs of students and adults for up-to-date technology, meeting and working environments, as well as to provide children with a library experience that activates their creativity and imagination, the WFL needs to evolve with a renovation that efficiently reimagines existing spaces. Will we rise to the challenge?

Meeting the challenge of turning ideas into reality requires strong support – from Town, from the WFL’s supporting organizations, and from YOU! Help Make the Connection among us stronger than ever!

A special thank you to all donors listed in this report. So much that our community enjoys and values at the Wellesley Free Library would simply not be possible without their generosity.

A Record-Setting GalaApril 5, 2018 marked the WFL Foundation’s most successful Gala to date. More than 290 people, including 56 family sponsors, attended the sold-out event at the Wellesley Country Club. Gala attendees had the privilege of hearing renowned historian and author David McCullough speak about his remarkable life, career, and love of libraries. He was lovingly introduced by his son, David McCullough Jr., popular Wellesley High School teacher and author. The “special appeal” for the evening raised more than $37,000 to help fund the new early childhood learning center at the historic Fells Branch Library. Thanks to Presenting Sponsor First Republic Bank, as well as the many other generous companies and families who sponsored the event, the Gala raised more than $275,000 for the WFLF.

Thank youto Wellesley resident Mary Rich, who ran her first Boston Marathon in April 2018 on behalf of the Wellesley Free Library Foundation.

“I love giving books the opportunity for a longer

life and another chance to enrich and give emotions

to people. It is rewarding to help the library continue

to offer all the programs that make our library such an

excellent, vibrant social center for the community.”

TERESA BARLOZZARI

“It is hard to imagine my life without the library! We never

know what we’ll leave with and what we’ll learn. I’m

happy to donate to the library because I know that private

funding is part of the reason the WFL is so amazing.”

BETH COOK

“I view WFL as a valuable community resource that facilitates a broad range of relevant services and capabilities... When I retired five years ago, I was happy to join the library as a volunteer performing a diverse set of interesting tasks. I derive a lot of personal satisfaction investing my time assisting the enthusiastic staff.” JOHN BARLOW
