  • 5/28/2018 Making The Future 2014 - University of Sussex campaign

Welcome to the 2014Making the Futurecampaign update

Since its launch three years ago, the

    campaign has grown from strength

to strength. Our aim is to raise 50million by 2016 to help us achieve

a margin of excellence in three core

areas of the University our people,

    programmes and places. I am

delighted to say that more than 3,000of you have already pledged your

support to this worthy cause, helping

us to raise over three-quarters of our

target. More important, however, is the

positive impact that your generosityand commitment to Sussex is having

on the campus and the lives of our

    students and faculty alike.

I would therefore like to take thisopportunity to say a personal thank you

to the many individuals, businesses, and charitable trusts and foundations

    that have supported the Campaign

so far. You are playing a vital part in

building an even better learning and

    teaching environment at Sussex a

place that will inspire our staff andstudents as we extend the boundaries

    of knowledge.

This update will highlight just a

few of the initiatives you have made

possible that are helping us to becomea truly outstanding university from

    supporting ground-breaking research

    and outstanding scholars to facilitating

    mentoring and community partnership

schemes. We are immensely proud of the

impact that philanthropy is having at

Sussex, and I do hope you will join us

in looking forward to the continued

growth and success of the Making theFuture campaign.

The student volunteers who run the

reception desk at the Students Union

Advice Centre offer a wide range ofadvice and representation on complex

    issues, such as mitigating evidence

    and academic misconduct, drugs and

    alcohol, employment rights, benefits

    and tax credits, harassment and

bullying, and much more. The Sussex Fund has ensured that

they receive specialist training to feelconfident in offering help. The training

    includes communication skills and how

best to deal with difficult situations, such as students in distress.

    Thanks to the generous support

from alumni, these volunteers will now

be able to give better assistance to a

greater number of students in need, as

    Current Sussex students contacted

    almost 4,000 alumni during last

years telephone campaigns, raisingmore than 200,000 in gifts and

    pledges for the Sussex Fund.

    Once again, we had an

    overwhelmingly positive response

from our alumni, who were delighted

to share their memories of Sussex.Every year an increasing number

of students apply to join the team

of phonathon callers and it is their

passion for Sussex and your warmth

and generosity that have made these

    campaigns a year-on-year success.The phonathon also provides a

    great opportunity for current students

to seek advice and tips from alumni

    who share their academic and

personal interests. Natasha Ali, a Law

undergraduate, is one of our callers. She commented: It was so great to

speak to somebody practicing law who

is not only extremely passionate about

Sussex but also highly motivated in

wanting to help shape the future for

current students like me.This year has seen the largest-ever

    disbursement of money towards Sussex

Fund projects, helping to ensure that

    students in financial hardship complete

their studies and the most talented

students are attracted to the University.

    Student callers have

    New students are enjoying a

warm welcome to Sussex with the

introduction of a buddy scheme, supported by the Sussex Fund.

    Pairing new arrivals with current

students, the scheme aims to smooth

the transition into university life by

    providing practical information and

together. It has been a huge success,

with over 60 students signing up in

its first term and plans to extend theprogramme next year.

    The new connections are a

    fantastic way to facilitate cross-

Q&AQ:Why did you choose to study at

Sussex?A: I was interested in an

interdisciplinary Arts and Scienceprogramme. Sussex was the only

university that offered a degree in

Philosophy and the Theory of Science.

Q:How would you sum up your time

    at university?

    A: Stimulating, challenging and fun.

    Colonel Drapers Lectures on

    International Relations will always

stand out.It was an exciting time. There were

    demonstrations against the Vietnam

War and we visited Paris during lesvnements of 1968. Revolution is

    fun!

    Buzz Goodbodys terrifying theatre

    productions left a lasting impression

(Buzz, EURO 1963, would laterbecome the first female director of the

    Royal Shakespeare Company), and Ill

never forget Jacqueline du Pr playing

    Elgars Cello Concertoat The Brighton

Festival. She didnt play the cello; she

    made love to it.

    Q:Youve been involved with a

number of different campaignprojects, what inspired you to support

    Sussex?

A:To date, Ive supported three PhDstudents: The first was on Artificial

    Intelligence, which reflected a personal

interest of mine and was motivated by

    intellectual curiosity. The PhD helped

to move the body of knowledge on,

but more importantly contributed tothe professional development of the

student, who has gone on to furtherresearch and teaching.

    The current two scholarships are

on climate change in Africa, whereI worked for a number of years and

which could help to build capacity in

    African governments to understand

and respond to the climate change

issues which are likely to affect the

continent in the coming decades. Thiswas motivated by a wish to contribute

to the development of the African

continent and I hope that the currentstudents will be able to go back to their

    countries and help develop practical

measures addressing climate change. The University has been very

appreciative of the support I have given

it, and Ive found that reconnecting

with Sussex, in particular with its

lecture series, has been immenselyintellectually stimulating.

Q:What would you say to someoneconsidering supporting Sussex?

A:The next generation is the only

    future we have.

Q:Finally, what advice would you give

    to our current students?

A:Work hard, play hard in that order!

    Gita Beker Busjeet graduated from

    Sussex with First Class Honours

in 2003 and went on to work on a

Papua New Guinea is home to thethird-largest remaining area of tropical

forest in the world, yet between 1972

and 2002, 15 per cent of the countrys

forests were cleared and nine per

cent were degraded through logging.Unlike all of their neighbours, the

    forest-dwelling community of Wanang

turned down logging offers for their

    traditionally owned lands and opted

instead for conservation. In partnership with Sussex

    and others, they are establishing

a 10,000-hectare rainforestconservation area and developing it

    into an internationally important centre

for ecological research, which aims toprovide the local communities with a

    sustainable income and an alternative

    to logging.

Led by Dr Alan Stewart and Dr Mika

Peck, Sussex is helping the Wanang

community, who live on less than 1

per person per day, to consolidate

the conservation area. An importantaspect of the work will be ensuring that

the local people have the business

and management skills to maintain asustainable livelihood in the long term.

    Sussex is overseeing the appointment

of a Papua New Guinean businessgraduate to develop a business model

for the community so that the vital

As one of the founding figures of theUniversity, Maurice Hutt played a

key role in our tradition of rigorous

    interdisciplinary study. During his

time at Sussex, Maurice enthused his

students as a Senior Tutor and SeniorProctor, chair of the History subject

    group and, latterly, Emeritus Reader.

Following his death in May 2013,

alumni Tom Fowke, Tom Kemnitz and

    Rachel Semlyen (ne Partington)

the first Secretaries of the StudentsUnion in 1961/62 established a

prize fund in his memory. Recalling

their memories of Maurice, they said:

    We remember his introductory lecture

enthusing us all with the ideas and

Ever expanding the boundaries ofcontemporary research issues, the

Sussex Law School is to offer a newvisiting research position in ethics,

In accordance with his wishes, the

Maurice Hutt Memorial Prize will be

    awarded to a History undergraduate

who is deemed to have made a

significant contribution to the life ofthe University outside of their

    academic course.

The University is working toincrease opportunities for visiting

For many of our supporters, leaving agift in their will provides an opportunity

to make a lasting and significant

    difference at the University. Here,

Professor John Murrell tells us whatmotivated him to remember Sussex in

    his will:

I am a very lucky fellow. I live

comfortably and so far have good

    health. However, getting around to

revising my will, it looked as thoughapart from my nearest and dearest, the

UK government might get the largest

slice of my inheritance.I moved to Sussex 50 years ago as

a very young professor and they have

looked after me well. Now, emeritusfor the past 15 years, I still enjoy the

    company of academic colleagues and

students. So I cannot think of a better

source of my potential inheritance than

    to express my thanks for a good life byleaving something to the University;

going to a charity, this gift will not

be subject to inheritance tax. I have

specified that the money be spent on

    postgraduate student support because

I enjoyed that aspect of my Universitylife above all others. Also, that is an

area which has become much more

difficult to sustain in recent years.

    If my circumstances change

in future years, this money is still

accessible for my needs, but I hopethat does not happen. Please think

about your own circumstances and try

to help the University in a similar way.

CBE (ENGAM 1969) sent this personal

    thank you:

My fathers father was an extremelydistinguished academic, and his two

younger brothers graduated fromCambridge; Dad instead went to RADA.

    So when, following my admission

to Sussex, he was appointed first

Pro-Chancellor then Chancellor ofthe University, he finally felt (to his

immense pleasure and relief!) that his

education was complete and that my

grandfather would be looking down with

genuine pride. His 10 years as Chancellor gave

him great joy and satisfaction and Ican tell you that he is hugely touched

that the Universitys arts centre is now

to be named after him particularly

as he was its very first Chairman back

in 1970.The fact that so many of his

    close friends and colleagues have

given so generously and added their

distinguished names to his portrait is

the most glorious icing on the cake. He

and I are immensely grateful to eachand every one of them.

    Finally, there is precious added

significance to both of us that the

Centre is to bear our family name; my

beloved late younger sister Jane, who

perished along with her daughter Lucyin the 2004 tsunami, attended the

University and we are hugely touchedthat a music practice room is to bear
