What Happens During Acculturation

Professional schools- extremely invasive exert intense control by purposely influencing the beliefs, values, and personality characteristics of their students

Etzioni, A. (1965). Organizational control structure, in J.G. March, ed., Handbook of Organizations, 650 (Chicago: Rand McNally).

Page 9: MAKING THE MOST OUT OF LAW SCHOOL Andy Benjamin, J.D., Ph.D. UW School of Law gahb54@u.washington.edu music generously provided by: Professor Paula Lustbader

Law school undermines professionalism and health

negates healthy values- intimacy, communitypromotes unhealthy values (external rewards, status, comparative worth)substitutes competition and anxiety, negates healthy motivation (personal enjoyment and values-based effort)habituates students to frustration of fundamental needs (health routines, self-esteem, relatedness, authenticity, security)
