there’s an elephant in every room

Some people talk too loud, or sing off key. Some people are bad cooks or never look clean. Some people are lousy in bed. Sometimes someone thinks they’re getting away with an affair, but everyone knows. Everyone. And of course, some people are jerks without ever knowing it.

Is there something about everyone that is always seen but never mentioned? Something about you?

In Tuskville there is an elephant sleeping in every bedroom, hiding in every basement and perching on every street post. Roger is an aspiring but talentless songwriter. Horton spends millions renovating while his partner knocks on doors for charity. Flora is trying to reincarnate her grandmother. With her own womb.

From the award winning team of writer jeffrey jay fowler and director kathryn osborne (minnie and mona play dead) comes Elephents: a surreal soap opera where people find the power to sing all the things they wish they could say.

why mpac has programmed it: Elephents is a critically acclaimed, hilarious surreal soap opera set in a dystopian future with the globe wrecked by climate change. With snappy to die for dialogue and very funny songs, Jeffrey Jay Fowler has written an absolute gem. The cast (including Jeffrey Jay) play the tragicomedy to the hilt. A giant-hearted story from a giant-sized storyteller.

Absolutely is the laugh out loud and touching tale of how a six foot nine introvert accidently discovers his joy of acting in a small wheatbelt town, and goes on to perform for cirque du soleil.

Following a highly acclaimed UK tour and SOLD OUT seasons in Perth comes true storytelling that is part armchair chat and part riveting re-enactment.

well, what are you waiting for? come on up! they’re back!

Yes, that’s right. Andy and Terry had such a ball with their crash-landing entry into the world of theatre with The 13-Storey Treehouse, they’re back for more. 13 storeys more, in fact. and you’re invited!

You know what 13 more storeys means. More inventions – like the 78 flavour ice-cream-dispensing robot and the brain bamboozling Maze of Doom (not to mention the self-inflating underpants) and more things to go wrong – not least of which is the very real possibility that the entire show is a complete and utter disaster. Will Andy and Terry push their friend Jill to her absolute limits? And who is this shady Hector Houtkop, with a really bad pirate accent? And what about all those pirates?

Adapted by award-winning playwright and author Richard Tulloch (The Book of Everything, Bananas in Pyjamas), The 26-Storey Treehouse is brought to you by the same cracker team that delivered the smash-hit stage version of The 13-Storey Treehouse.

So what are you waiting for? You’ll laugh your head off!

“My eight year old co-reviewer loved the show… has the kids engaged and amused from the outset.” the australian on the 13-storey treehouse

e360 ALLSTARS is a phenomenal physical performance exploring all forms of rotation. Boasting a stellar cast, including world champion athletes, world class dancers and world renowned musicians, the production connects the street with the elite to deliver a radical urban circus!

A performance like no other, 360 ALLSTARS reinvents the traditional circus by presenting contemporary performance styles instead of conventional circus art forms. Replace acrobats with break dancers, substitute a basketball freestyler in place of a juggler, swap the unicyclist for a BMX flatlander, and exchange the hoop act for a Roue Cyr artist, and you get an exhilarating circus performance like nothing you have seen before!

And with live music from award-winning master musicians and “ringmasters”, Gene Peterson and Sam Perry from Perth, 360 ALLSTARS is as aurally exciting as it is visually astounding.

Featuring artists from UK, Europe, America, Australia & NZ, the performance is a spectacular, colourful and audibly exciting expression of a generation that has reinvented public performance.

Fusing amazing physical skills with the extraordinary artistry that emerges from urban culture, 360 ALLSTARS is a revolutionary production that will leave you dizzy with excitement!

The cast of 360 ALLSTARS come together with the aim of turning traditional circus on its head while maintaining the thrill and magic of one of the oldest entertainment art-forms in the world.

In today’s digital world, you can be whoever you want to be. Retouch photos, borrow opinions, save the world, share everything, connect to everyone, be the best “you” in front of hundreds of ‘friends’.

But what happens when we define ourselves by the opinions of others, rather than who we really are? In creating a persona, how long until the real you disappears into the myth?

In a landscape of answers to unasked questions, Shadowboxing offers questions truly worth contemplating.

“We honestly thought it was fantastic…teachers and students were completely immersed in the performance. The team related really well to students in the workshop, over all would rate it as the best in school performance and workshop we have had in a long time.” – teacher from newton moore shs on black swan’s 2014 regional touring performance and workshop

When australian dance theatre first presented Garry Stewart’s work in London 12 years ago it was described by the times as ‘the most hazardous explosion of movement seen in London in years’. Since then australian dance theatre has gone on to astound audiences around the globe with its uniquely powerful style of contemporary dance and celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015.

Now australian dance theatre returns to Mandurah with Garry Stewart’s Be Your Self.

Explore what makes you ‘you’ in this powerful work as the athletic dancers of adt are transformed into erupting, emotional entities projecting startling physical images to a wildly unpredictable, cartoonish, electronic score.

Be Your Self challenges our understanding of who we are by unpicking the conventions we use to convince ourselves of a singular ‘I’. In this extraordinary creation Garry Stewart situates the body at the centre of his inquiry and reveals that despite our civilising cultural inscriptions the body is still a force to be reckoned with.

“..An exhilarating dance work that is entertaining to watch and interesting to think about ... nine outstanding dancers in a constantly moving jigsaw of limbs and torsos.” – sydney morning herald

“Be Your Self is a slick production performed by a confident company of strong dancers that literally fling themselves into the physicality of the choreography.” – daily telegraph

In Francis Ford Coppola’s 1975 ground-breaking film The Godfather, the head of a prize horse is savagely cut off and placed in the bed of a hotshot Hollywood film director for the refusal of a favour... ever thought about the two guys that had to put it there?

From the writer of Domestic Bliss, a Change in the Weather and Nature as Explained by Theatre comes a whip-cracking tale of two men (The Fonzie Brothers) given this viciously gruesome task to ensure their future with the mob.

A new production from opera australia

The ancient tombs of the Pharaohs hide many secrets. Will Tamino the daring archaeologist find them? Will it be Papageno, the zany ornithologist? Or will the forces of evil crack the code, find the treasure and get the girl? Find out when opera australia presents a ripping yarn for all the family.

The Magic Flute is a quest for wisdom and true love. Taking inspiration from the movies, director Michael Gow and designer Robert Kemp have set their new touring production of Mozart’s final work for the stage as a rollicking adventure in 1930s Egypt. There will be mummies, hieroglyphic puzzles and a good few laughs along the way, but is it opera? Mozart didn’t care, and nor should you. He was far more concerned with firing his audience’s imagination through the power of music. Which is why you’ll find something for everyone in there, from the Queen of the Night’s demented showstoppers, to achingly beautiful arias, to simple ballads that wrap you up in warmth and charm.

Prepare to be enchanted, when this new, fully-staged production of The Magic Flute comes to Mandurah, complete with fabulous 1930s costumes, a chamber orchestra and a vibrant cast of singers.

Sung in English, performed with chamber orchestra

Patrons’ Advice: There are storm lighting effects in the show (not an actual strobe, just

flashing lights). There will be the use of a smoke machine. There will also be use of a

Cut the Sky is a meditation on a dystopian Australian future; a ‘ghost musical’ sung by the climate change affected, the extinct, the dislocated. Featuring five poems by Nyikina/Walmajarri poet and dream catcher Edwin Lee Mulligan matched with five songs by Nick Cave, Buffalo Springfield and ‘future soul’ singer Ngaiire, Cut the Sky invites us all to dream.

Mirroring many current situations around the world today, indigenous peoples in the north west of Australia are facing massive industrialisation on the traditional lands of many language groups. Cut the Sky tells the dreaming story for the gas, a poison woman buried miles beneath the earth’s crust, currently threatened by intensive shale gas fracking exploration. The production begins in the near future in an environmental catastrophe and propels us back in time to the early mining protests on Aboriginal lands in Western Australia which raised questions of resource management, land rights and how we value that which is above and below the earths crust. Have the questions changed, or are they still the same?

Cut the Sky draws on intensive local and international perspectives through a series collaborations exploring the relevance of indigenous knowledge systems to the broader global community today. Cast and co-devised with a specialist line up of dancers, singers and actors from remote and urban Australia and with a creative team from Burkina Faso, Belgium, Northern India and Australia, this ambitious multi-artform project showcases Marrugeku’s hallmark contemporary choreography; restless, taut and unwavering.

why mpac has programmed it: Bob Kingdom has been presenting this show around the world since it premiered at the Chelsea Arts Club in 1990. Bob then went on to present it at the edinburgh festival fringe and has been touring this work since then. It is a real thrill to be able present this dynamic, ageless work about one of literature’s lions.

vibraphone [vahy-bruh-fohn] noun

A musical percussion instrument with a double row of tuned metal bars each above a tubular resonator. Contains a pedal to control sustain. Most impressively (and physically) played with four mallets. Emits a mellow and smooth singing tone.

Old music made new again with masterful mallets of steel played by nick parnell, one of the world’s foremost vibraphone players. “I am passionate about showing audiences what can really be done with a vibraphone. When played well, it has the most amazing and beautiful sound that transports audiences to a heavenly place. The vibes combined with piano accompaniment makes for a completely unique concert experience for the listener,” says nick parnell.

Favourites from an internationally classic music repertoire – such as Gershwin’s Summertime, Albeniz’s Tango, Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso and Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba have been cleverly re-imagined by Parnell to create a whole new, vibrant listening experience despite the familiarity of the melodies. Most importantly, the vibraphone superbly melded with piano gets its moment in the spotlight, ranging from the technically challenging to sheer lyrical beauty in the space of a heartbeat.

Born in the Australian outback, nick parnell started teaching himself drums in his parents’ sheep shearing shed at the age of ten. Such humble beginnings ignited a passion in parnell that has led to industry acclaim, such as the Centenary of Federation Medal awarded by the Australian Government and appearances with the likes of david helfgott, simon tedeschi and the australian string quartet.

community engagement opportunity: For string players to join Nick for a performance of Gershwin’s “Summertime” live on stage as part of the performance on the 17th September. The rehearsal would take place the afternoon of 16th September.

why mpac has programmed it: Nick’s passion and musical skill are infectious. His ability to communicate with music students of all abilities is the key reason the mpac has programmed this concert.

a boy. a girl. a fin.

Jack and Lauren are trapped in a nightmare that only one of them can escape. When young love meets a giant fin, suddenly life seems large, scary and beautiful.

Award-winning artists the skeletal system won over critics and audiences with this killer tale of blood and heartache in the deep blue sea. This terrifying and beautiful play by WA playwright will o’mahony sees two tiny people caught in a too huge ocean with one very hungry fish.

Great White is a coming-of-age story of love, fate, human frailty and every swimmer’s worst nightmare.

Winner of the Performing Arts WA Award for Best New Play and three Blue Room Theatre Awards including The Judges’ Award for Best Ensemble Performance.

“If you like intelligent, brilliantly constructed, acutely relevant and deeply affecting theatre, stop reading here and go and see Great White.” – artshub,

community engagement project: milestone moments – an online/offline photographic exhibition

We all have photos in the family album from their past taken at important moments that both mean a lot and spark memories of what that time in their life was like.

milestone moments encourages community members to go back through their photos and find a moment that was special to them – then recreate it as closely as possible today.

masterclasses and workshops: Between them the touring company have experience in playwriting, acting, devised theatre, and improvisation, so a range of workshops or master classes are available, subject to the demands of the touring schedule.

why mpac has programmed it: This was the standout show from the blue room theatre in 2013, with outstanding snappy dialogue, and a very smart look at those important decisions in our lives and how we go about making them.

Being in the middle of a life and death situation has never been so fun.

When a large sports bag full of cash is brought into Peter’s very ordinary home, his family find themselves caught up in a sinister and disturbing chain of events. You’re invited to step onto the floor and into this gripping thriller, experiencing first-hand the sordid betrayal and moral philandering that’s about to smother this suburban dream.

Created by award winning company side pony productions (The Pride; The Wives of Hemingway; The Manic Pony), director Zoe Pepper brings you a new interactive audio experience, placing the audience at the centre of the action.

The Confidence Man is Dogville meets Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt – a morally complex tale complete with goodies, baddies, and a dose of good old fashioned psychotic menace. Featuring vocal performances by some of Perth’s finest actors, The Confidence Man unfolds with the gripping intimacy of a tale whispered in your ear.

audience engagement: Performed by six audience members, equipped with masks and headsets that guide them through the story using a combination of sound track, narration and pre-recorded dialogue, participants navigate the space, experiencing events in the first person. Each participant hears an individualised audio track, specific to their character, which instructs their movement, informs their gestures and gives them a personalised perspective on the story. Those who prefer to watch can survey the action from the perimeter, eavesdropping on the characters’ most private thoughts and conversations. Listening through headphones the audience use a personal console to toggle between the audio of the different characters; building their own unique experience as they choose the action they want to follow.

why mpac has programmed it: The mpac has followed zoe pepper’s career for some time and in our view The Confidence Man is a stand out work offering the opportunity for 6 audience members to participate, and the rest of the audience to create their own story.
