NEW CARDIAC CENTREMaking your hospital experience BETTER TOGETHER.

A pioneering cardiac service in radial angiography, current-ly not available elsewhere on the continent, is now offered at our new cardiac care centre. Launched on 10 November 2014, the new state-of-the art facility, under the directive of SUNHEART and the Division of Cardiology, Department Med-icine, Stellenbosch University and the Hospital, has seen a multi-million rand investment by key private and public part-ners, of which Medtronic is the principle partner. This en-ables the Division of Cardiology to offer advanced cardiac care to more patients, especially from previously disadvan-taged communities in and around the Western Cape, and alleviate current angiography bottlenecks in the region.

SUNHEART, founded by five cardiologists practicing at the Division of Cardiology, is a not-for-profit foundation that strives for equal access to advanced cardiac care for all patients. SUNHEART has enabled the building of state-of-the-art infrastructure, which resulted in an expansion of service delivery and improved work-flow. This has meant redesigning the outpatient service, introducing paperless reporting systems as well as developing echocardiography imaging- and stress test services for an improved ‘one-stop’ patient service. The new radial suite situated in the angiog-raphy theatre complex allows patients to be admitted and

discharged on the same day. “Not only are we looking at ‘business class coronary intervention’ in a state-of-the-art fa-cility, but radial angiography and stenting through our radial suite will significantly reduce the need for an overnight hos-pital stay,” says Prof. Anton Doubell, Head: Division of Cardi-ology and Director of SUNHEART.

Further support for the improvement of service delivery by the unit comes in the form of an innovative outreach pro-gramme where consultants render a decentralised cardiol-ogy service at referral hospitals, which improves the access of patients to cardiac care in remote areas outside of Cape Town. An important outcome of this programme is the train-ing of healthcare professionals at these hospitals.

“By investing in top quality personnel and through the build-ing of strategic partnerships, this unit has firmly established itself as a cutting edge institution at the forefront of cardi-ology service delivery, training and research. SUNHEART is a success story that demonstrates what can be achieved through the building of public-private partnerships,” said the Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha.

CONGRATULATIONS Thank you for your hard work. A job well done!!

Dear Editor

Today (25.11.2014) was my first time at the Oncology Depart-ment! I want to thank you for the warm and friendly reception.

Special thanks to Carmen and Sandra! You’ve turned a nerve-wracking day into a not so bad day!

Many thanks.

Ms Esme Cilliers (De Doorns)

Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to thank Dr’s Du Preez, Coetzee, Wynand Wagenaar and mostly Dr Peens. I had a bypass and Dr Du Preez performed it. They are first -class surgeons and keep the patients informed. You should be proud to have them. Nothing is too much for them – even the staff. They are all in Ward A2 Cardiothoracic. Well done, guys!!!

Thanking you so much.

Mr Sydney Permall

Dear Tygerberg Hospital

My brother, Douglas van Dyk, was brought to the Trauma Unit at Tygerberg Hospital on Tuesday 25 November 2014, with a severe facial injury sustained during work. There was not much clarity over what was to be done due to not being sure wheth-er he would be transferred to a private facility or not. This was cleared up this morning and he was then subsequently trans-ferred to Mediclinic Cape Gate.

I would however like to applaud the amazing trauma doctors, whom I met today at Tygerberg Hospital, who were on the morning shift. One was South African and one was from Mau-ritius. They went beyond their call of duty in showing compas-sion, helpfulness and understanding, taking time out to try to assist us in getting my brother moved and ensuring he would be treated by a plastic surgeon.

I do not remember the names of these two doctors, but would appreciate it if you could check who was on duty, and please convey my extreme gratefulness to them both for their com-passion. I know that a trauma ward is extremely busy, but they both made the time to make a difference for both myself and my brother, and we will not forget this. Please, if possible, do convey this to them and the wonderful nursing staff on duty. I do wish I could have written down their names as one tends to forget these things during a stressful time.

Yours sincerely, Nicky van Dyk, Elsenburg - Stellenbosch

THE NEW LABOUR EPIDURAL SERVICE

Far Left: From left to right: Professional Nurse Swarts, Dr L Joseph, Mrs T Nocanda (patient), Professional Nurse Phillips, Dr J King and Dr J Burke

Giving birth is one of life’s most sacred and precious bless-ings. Women embrace this life-changing experience in

many different ways, many of which are influenced by cul-tural and traditional norms. This has been a dynamic process since the beginning of time! With this ever- evolving process has come the need and development of adequate and effective pain relief. There is no doubt that as miraculous as childbirth is, it can be associated with a considerable amount of pain. With the development and advancement of medicine, the labour epidural has proved to provide mothers with a comfortable, pleasant and satisfying experience comparable to no other modali-ty of analgesia.

Tygerberg Hospital provides tertiary obstetric care to more than 7 000 mothers per year. Treat-ing this large population comes with a great deal of responsibility and service delivery. In June

2014, the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, together with the Department of Ob-stetrics and Gynaecology, undertook to markedly improve the analgesia management during labour. Under the leadership of doctors Stefan Gebhardt, Jonathan Burke and Hannes van der Merwe, the provision of a dedicated labour epidural service has been developed and has grown tremendously, with outstanding results leading to happy and pain-free mothers.

An additional anaesthetics Registrar and Registered Nurse has been made available to pro-vide the service during office hours. After hours and over weekends the service will be limited

to patients where an epidural is clinically indicated.

Our vision is to continuously improve our medical services and knowledge, as well as to pro-vide the patient with comprehensive management.

In aid of Movember, Mr Reginald Abrahams initiated a Men’s Wellness and Awareness Day on 31 October. Information sessions, wellness screening, as well as neck and shoulder mas-sages were conducted by GEMS. Denosa, City Mission, Old Mutual and other stakeholders con-tributed to the overall success of the day.

Staff of Tygerberg Hospital supported the Wear Purple for Preemies campaign on 17 November in aid of Prematurity Day. The HRD and Labour Relations Department supported in the form of purchasing stickers to dress the Purple part and started a clothing drive. The initiation was inspired by one of their colleagues who was born prematurely 27 years ago (in the picture) and weighed between 250 and 350 grams. The campaign focused on prematurely born babies who often face short- and long-term health risks and require specialist medical attention. Over 80% of pre-term deaths are caused by neonatal infections and complications aligned with pre-maturity. In most cases, the exact cause of pre-maturity is unknown.

INTERFAITH SERVICE

SPECIAL AWARDS It was a night of glitz and razzmatazz as the who’s who of the South African sport and social scene descended on the South African Sport Awards held at the Sandton Convention Cen-tre on Sunday 30th November 2014. The Department of Sport and Recreation, together with partners SASCOC, SABC, Na-tional Lotteries Board, Supersport and the adjudication panel, announced over 15 winners in 19 categories. Triathlon South Africa walked away with top honours by being awarded Fed-eration of the Year. Other finalists in this category were Swim-ming SA and Rowing SA. Dr Debbie Alexander, pictured far right, President of Triathlon South Africa, and Head of Depart-ment, Clinical Psychology at Tygerberg Hospital, received the award and dedicated it to the entire Triathlon ‘family’ – The TSA Leadership, Coaches, Technical Officials, Volunteers, Ad-ministrators, Stakeholders, Athletes and Supporters, all whose collective efforts made this possible.

INTERFAITH SERVICE

Thursday, 13 November marked a century of the annual Interfaith Service at Tygerberg Hospital, led by the patron of the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Staff, patients and visitors from various de-nominations filled the Disa Hall to attend the special service.

A scripture reading was done by Rabbi Malcolm Matitiani and Moulana Nazeem Jongie did the Arabic prayer. This was followed by the Arch’s emotional speech in which he thanked staff of their tireless work and commitment towards their patients. Arch said: “I think God is spending a lot of time crying. A few days ago, 48 children were killed in Nigeria. Over 300 girls have been abducted. On Sunday, a mother walked with her son and he was attacked. They ripped him to death in front of his mother. God is crying… But then he sees Tygerberg and he starts smiling through the tears.”

While lighting the candles commemorating those we have lost during the past year, Ms Wena Moe-lich sang her song written, composed and dedicated to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, ‘Light a candle’. The anthem was sung and Arch did the blessing.

Pictured far right is the gift presented by Director of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, Prof. Nulda Beyers, to the Arch. The piece of art drawn by Marie Stand-er was inspired by a photograph taken by Damien Schumann of Arch with a former patient, Dylan van Niekerk, at the hospital’s thanksgiving service in 2005. OPEN DAY Tygerberg Hospital hosted its annual Open Day on 9 October 2014. Community members as far as Robert-son, Malmesbury, Worcester and surrounding areas visited to gain insight on the services rendered at the hospital. Free health checks, including blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol testing and prostate finger prick tests, were conducted by the competent staff of Tygerberg Hospital and CANSA. Despite the overcast weather, there was an eagerness to have the tests done. Support from various stakeholders, NGO’s and the dedication from the committee and departments who partook, added to the huge success of the day.
