MAKING PLACES
BUILDING HEIGHTS
High streets often develop relative uniformity of building
heights along their length. Berkhamsted has a diversity
of building heights in its town centre, primarily ranging
from one to four-storeys. The diversity of building
heights does not have a negative impact on the building
line.
The taller buildings on the High Street vary greatly in
quality, from St Peter’s Church (2) to a series of modern
four-storey shops on the south side of the High Street
by Cowper Road (1). Most of the one-storey structures
are significant listed buildings, such as the Quaker
Church and the Sayers Almshouses.
Buildings throughout Berkhamsted are generally two
storeys with some three-storey residential buildings and
a few examples of buildings greater than four storeys.
Buildings should generally follow the contours of the
land to prevent views being blocked.

There is a variety of buildings heights on the High
Street, ranging from one to four-storeys.
MP3B
The newer four-storey buildings on the High Street
are of mixed quality, often employing such elements
as flat rooftops which are out of character with the
town’s architectural legacy.
