When one starts to mention the surname Madima it should shout a strong message to your ears. From generation to generation they have conquered and have always been fl ying their fl ag high for ages. From literature to entertainment, they seem to rule the game. I remember the likes of Itani, Lufu, and Maduvha, the list is endless. Ladies and Gentlemen, we now introduce the latest offspring of one of the most talented families in the history of Venda tribe “Shumi Madima”.* Hi Shumi and welcome to Makoya Mag.
Hi thank you very much for having me. * You are now the youngest fl ag bearer in the family; do you fi nd it a challenge?
There is a lot of pressure because of the people in my family who are well-known. It makes me proud to be a Madima. We are an interesting lot, but I actually tend to avoid mentioning my surname because I want people to know me for what I have to offer. For the most part I’m really just doing me and fi nding my path. I’m not trying to sing like my sister or write like my grandfather, but I cannot deny that coming from a family of creatives has allowed me to do what I do. It makes me proud, especially thinking of my grandfather, the late E.S Madima, and to know that I’m one of the people who inherited his talent. My parents have played a big part, having been in the ECHO band and therefore music was always a part of me. My sister Maduvha is my light. I don’t think anyone will ever understand how awesome she is to me. The support she’s given me with this music thing goes beyond what I expected. My brother DJ Shandu is my hero, the coolest dude ever and I’m sure a lot who know him will agree. Mukoma is my other brother, I really hope you guys will get to hear what he has to offer because he’s so soulful and has one of the best voices I’ve heard. * How long have you been in the industry?
I don’t know what determines that but I guess I can say, based on the fact that I’ve only been on radio now, that it’s been about three months. It was around July 2010 though that i started pursuing a solo career in music. Before that, I was part if the University of Johannesburg Choir and we would go on tour and perform and rehearse three times a week so it was a real music job. I owe a lot to that experience. It taught me that a lot of hard work goes into the industry if longevity is what you’re looking for. * What is your favourite genre at the
moment?That’s a very diffi cult question to ask
a musician because I expose myself to different genres and I draw inspiration from it. Afro Jazz was my fi rst love, but
now I have now grown to love soul and what people call “world music”. These are genres that
are very open and unlimited and allow you
to experiment
with various elements. My favourite artists, whose league I aspire to be in are Corinne Bailey Rae, Sade and Asa. I love, love, loooooooove The Muffi nz and Freshlyground. I make an effort to listen to people who aren’t pop-culture like Ingrid Michaelson and Maverick Sabre. Raggae is a genre that speaks to me. I haven’t explored much in that department but I appreciate Bob Marley and Colbert Mukwevho. * What are your special aspirations for women this month?
I wish for women to know that you can be whoever you want to be. There’s a lot of judgement, unfortunately amongst women themselves, of the choices we make. I think we need to support each other in the paths we choose to take, be it whether one chooses to be a stay-at-home mother with fi ve children, or whether one values their career more than family life at the moment. And even if you want the best of both, go for it! The right path is the one that makes your heart happy, pursue that. * Three things you can’t live without?
I have three things, God, love and Faith. God is Love. Love made me. It is an unconditional ever-present force that exists despite my fl aws. I would not be where I am if it were not for Love. And I could not stand if I wasn’t sure of the fact the God is love. This is the reason I do what I do. I was loved enough to be given the talents I have, and now I must love people enough to share this with them and give them the best of me. Faith is that force that lets me know I am worthy of reaching my dreams. I would have quit by now if it wasn’t, because I refuse to believe otherwise. My faith won’t fail me. * Tell us about your project and where can we fi nd it?
I do not have albums and only released singles which are currently playing on radio. I wanted to test if people would like the work I’m doing and so far I truly appreciate all the feedback I’ve been getting, most especially the airplay from the radio stations. Earlier this year I entered the Hansa Pilsener competition where the winners got to open for Ushers. I made it to the Top12 but unfortunately did not make the fi nal 6. I loved every bit of the experience and the best thing I got from that was the support which I believe I still have and will always cherish. * Thank for your time, we’ll hook up with you some other time....

Mr. David Mmbi is currently
making waves with his new debut Album. His sound has a somewhat
Traditional and Jazzy Feel but
it’s different it’s unique. Thee David Mmbi warmed his fans when
he was performing at Makhado annual show the funny part came
when he started performing Zahara “Loliwe” and that’s where he hit
me by shock I mean he has got hit tracks that people love but Why
did he choose a Zahara track now he sounded like a Mbihara, a cross artistic breed of Mmbi and Zahara. Mr. Mmbi, with respect next time
stick to your music. The one we love and support. If we want Zahara we
will go to the Eastern Cape.
CoolFelo the diss-master is coming back with
a bang! His project is
fi nished and ready to roll. From our last Edition which featured
CoolFelo, the Dude has grown extremely. His Swag is back on board like how Stella got her groove back. His performance skills will blow you
away. A close friend said “all is well with coolfelo but his love life is complicated”. The diss-master
is still on board with a new fl ow, stronger and better. He recently did a
collabo with the king of free Flow, Nicodemic.
Our Local Artists are making a difference with the education is the
key Campaign touring to schools advising learners not to Drop out of schools to take Music as a Career alongside TVEP, Love life, Gym for you . They have visited numerous
institutions and all events have been a success. This initiative brought
SABC2 La Familia to shoot an episode on it. The Founder of the campaign
says it has United Artists and this empowering learners:- Percy,
Belafonte, T-man Gavini, Nicodemic, CoolFelo, Dk low, Ghetto Queen,
kingsash, The Replay and many more.

Empowering women for work or to bullyI have been assessing male behavior for a while now and I am saddened by
how much they are hurting, and showing it in so many different ways. This letter fits very well with the sister month theme. It is good and wonderful that women empowerment is in progress, and it is certainly not an overnight thing. Where are we to draw the line in our women empowerment? Out of spite, I’ve heard men say ‘women will sleep with their men’.
I think that as a society, we are slowly and surely losing it. Women are CEO’s at home, they take their work positions to their homes and bedrooms, wherein they were supposed to leave them at the gates of their work places. Is that what women empowerment is all about? Conside this term: modern families and dads, where normal roles change due to circumstances, e.g: wife only working. It certainly does not hold water to women being CEO’s at home. Men’s egos are bruised easily by even the smallest thing and we, as women know that very well and therefore stand firm on being independent, not to bruise but to feel whole as individuals.
The is this shift that needs to take place, where a man Sees a woman not as property; a tool for his needs or a brainless person who does not know what is good for them. Men have a tendency of thinking that women still think like their mothers, who knew nothing about growing as individuals. We were raised to believe that as a woman you grow up, go to school and marry, which is still believed by some women. Today women grow up being made aware of opportunities in things they can be involved in, which can make them happy as individuals. Instead of going to school so as you may be married, a women goes to school to enjoy the fruits of her hard work.
Please hear me clearly, I am not against being married, it is good to be married, to find a friend and someone that loves and respects you. Not someone who thinks that giving you money; a home and children makes him a real man. It makes him a man under obligation and he will therefore find a women he can be relaxed and be friends with.Women empowerment is not an opportunity to hurt men for regarding us less important, its an opportunity for us (men and women) to see life with a different eye, where we do not feel threatened by work positions and it certainly is not referring to bullying men at home.

ALEX is actually called ADMIRE ALEX PHANGO. He was born some 25 years ago and is currently based at Tshiozwi village in the Sinthumule area. He says that
he is a humble, down-to-earth kind of a person. Some describe Alex as a kind and loving person, ever smiling, docile and abstemious.
Whenhefirstenteredintothemediaindustryprofessionallyitwasintheyear2009.Likeanyotheraverageguy,Alexwasstrandedintheislandsofunemployment,desperatelylookingforajob.Heapproachedavarietyofcompaniesinothersectors,apartfromthemediaandevenaskedhisfriendstokeepacloseeartothegroundforhim.Ittookforevertogetanyresponse.BecausehewasstillnewinLimpopo,particularlyMakhado,hehadnoconnectionswhatsoeverandhehadtoconfrontthisphasealone.
ThenonedaywhenhewasrelaxingathomeinTshiozwi,hereceivedacallfromhisbestfriend,MashuduMasinyane.Thefriendaskedhimifheknewanythingaboutjournalism.Withouthesitation,Alexexcitedlytoldhimthatitwashisfieldofexpertise.“HetoldmeafriendofhishadjustlaunchedanewnewspapercalledMORNINGLIGHTandheneededsomejournalistsandmarketingconsultants,”saidAlexwhenspeakingtoMakoyalastweek.

InthemediaindustryAlexhasfamiliarisedhimselfwithmanyasamulti-taskedperson.InvariouscompaniesintheCBDheisknownasthemarketingconsultant,inthefieldajournalist.“Predominantly,intheofficeandatseminarsandpressconferences,IamTheNewsEditor.”

When one starts to mention the surname Madima it should shout a strong message to your ears. From generation to generation they have conquered and have always been fl ying their fl ag high for ages. From literature to entertainment, they seem to rule the game. I remember the likes of Itani, Lufu, and Maduvha, the list is endless. Ladies and Gentlemen, we now introduce the latest offspring of one of the most talented families in the history of Venda tribe “Shumi Madima”.* Hi Shumi and welcome to Makoya Mag.
Hi thank you very much for having me. * You are now the youngest fl ag bearer in the family; do you fi nd it a challenge?
There is a lot of pressure because of the people in my family who are well-known. It makes me proud to be a Madima. We are an interesting lot, but I actually tend to avoid mentioning my surname because I want people to know me for what I have to offer. For the most part I’m really just doing me and fi nding my path. I’m not trying to sing like my sister or write like my grandfather, but I cannot deny that coming from a family of creatives has allowed me to do what I do. It makes me proud, especially thinking of my grandfather, the late E.S Madima, and to know that I’m one of the people who inherited his talent. My parents have played a big part, having been in the ECHO band and therefore music was always a part of me. My sister Maduvha is my light. I don’t think anyone will ever understand how awesome she is to me. The support she’s given me with this music thing goes beyond what I expected. My brother DJ Shandu is my hero, the coolest dude ever and I’m sure a lot who know him will agree. Mukoma is my other brother, I really hope you guys will get to hear what he has to offer because he’s so soulful and has one of the best voices I’ve heard. * How long have you been in the industry?
I don’t know what determines that but I guess I can say, based on the fact that I’ve only been on radio now, that it’s been about three months. It was around July 2010 though that i started pursuing a solo career in music. Before that, I was part if the University of Johannesburg Choir and we would go on tour and perform and rehearse three times a week so it was a real music job. I owe a lot to that experience. It taught me that a lot of hard work goes into the industry if longevity is what you’re looking for. * What is your favourite genre at the
moment?That’s a very diffi cult question to ask
a musician because I expose myself to different genres and I draw inspiration from it. Afro Jazz was my fi rst love, but
now I have now grown to love soul and what people call “world music”. These are genres that
are very open and unlimited and allow you
to experiment
with various elements. My favourite artists, whose league I aspire to be in are Corinne Bailey Rae, Sade and Asa. I love, love, loooooooove The Muffi nz and Freshlyground. I make an effort to listen to people who aren’t pop-culture like Ingrid Michaelson and Maverick Sabre. Raggae is a genre that speaks to me. I haven’t explored much in that department but I appreciate Bob Marley and Colbert Mukwevho. * What are your special aspirations for women this month?
I wish for women to know that you can be whoever you want to be. There’s a lot of judgement, unfortunately amongst women themselves, of the choices we make. I think we need to support each other in the paths we choose to take, be it whether one chooses to be a stay-at-home mother with fi ve children, or whether one values their career more than family life at the moment. And even if you want the best of both, go for it! The right path is the one that makes your heart happy, pursue that. * Three things you can’t live without?
I have three things, God, love and Faith. God is Love. Love made me. It is an unconditional ever-present force that exists despite my fl aws. I would not be where I am if it were not for Love. And I could not stand if I wasn’t sure of the fact the God is love. This is the reason I do what I do. I was loved enough to be given the talents I have, and now I must love people enough to share this with them and give them the best of me. Faith is that force that lets me know I am worthy of reaching my dreams. I would have quit by now if it wasn’t, because I refuse to believe otherwise. My faith won’t fail me. * Tell us about your project and where can we fi nd it?
I do not have albums and only released singles which are currently playing on radio. I wanted to test if people would like the work I’m doing and so far I truly appreciate all the feedback I’ve been getting, most especially the airplay from the radio stations. Earlier this year I entered the Hansa Pilsener competition where the winners got to open for Ushers. I made it to the Top12 but unfortunately did not make the fi nal 6. I loved every bit of the experience and the best thing I got from that was the support which I believe I still have and will always cherish. * Thank for your time, we’ll hook up with you some other time....

Mr. David Mmbi is currently
making waves with his new debut Album. His sound has a somewhat
Traditional and Jazzy Feel but
it’s different it’s unique. Thee David Mmbi warmed his fans when
he was performing at Makhado annual show the funny part came
when he started performing Zahara “Loliwe” and that’s where he hit
me by shock I mean he has got hit tracks that people love but Why
did he choose a Zahara track now he sounded like a Mbihara, a cross artistic breed of Mmbi and Zahara. Mr. Mmbi, with respect next time
stick to your music. The one we love and support. If we want Zahara we
will go to the Eastern Cape.
CoolFelo the diss-master is coming back with
a bang! His project is
fi nished and ready to roll. From our last Edition which featured
CoolFelo, the Dude has grown extremely. His Swag is back on board like how Stella got her groove back. His performance skills will blow you
away. A close friend said “all is well with coolfelo but his love life is complicated”. The diss-master
is still on board with a new fl ow, stronger and better. He recently did a
collabo with the king of free Flow, Nicodemic.
Our Local Artists are making a difference with the education is the
key Campaign touring to schools advising learners not to Drop out of schools to take Music as a Career alongside TVEP, Love life, Gym for you . They have visited numerous
institutions and all events have been a success. This initiative brought
SABC2 La Familia to shoot an episode on it. The Founder of the campaign
says it has United Artists and this empowering learners:- Percy,
Belafonte, T-man Gavini, Nicodemic, CoolFelo, Dk low, Ghetto Queen,
kingsash, The Replay and many more.
