The Malawi Family Planning toolkit was created by the RH Toolkit Taskforce, made up of individuals from the Malawi Ministry of Health (Reproductive Health and Health Education Units), PSI, Futures Group, UNFPA, Bridge Project, National Youth Council of Malawi, National Organization of Nurses and Midwives, and Management Sciences for Health.

What are K4Health Toolkits?K4Health Toolkits are electronic collections of carefully selected information resources on a particular topic for health policy makers, program managers, and service providers. Toolkits are based on a continuous publishing principle that allows them to evolve after publication to capture additional resources and to identify and fill remaining information gaps.

What types of resources are included?

This toolkit was created to provide resources and tools on family planning, specifically aimed at audiences in Malawi. It contains:

Presentations and lessons learned on key family planning topics

Communication materials including pamphlets, posters, and booklets

Training materials

Meeting minutes and reports from key family planning events

Various guidelines and protocols issued by the Malawi Ministry of Health

Who are the intended audiences?

The toolkit is intended for use by:

Policy makers and program managers who are interested in adding or improving existing family planning services

Health care professionals who are interested in accurate information about family planning in Malawi

We invite you to suggest resources or adapt the resources in this toolkit to meet your needs.

How do I get started using this toolkit?

Some of the tools are readily available in an adaptable format (for example, Microsoft Word documents and PowerPoint presentations). We encourage you to alter and personalize these tools for your own use (please remember to credit the source). If you do use these tools or adapt them, we would love to hear from you. Please e-mail us. (To make a comment about the toolkit or suggest a resource, use the feedback form.)

How can I suggest a resource to include in this toolkit?

We invite you to contribute to improving this toolkit. If you have developed or use quality resources that you think should be included in the toolkit, please use the feedback form to suggest them. The toolkit collaborators will review and consider your suggestions.

How can I make a comment or give feedback?

If you have comments about the toolkit, please use the feedback form. Your feedback will help to ensure the toolkit remains up-to-date and is continually improved. For example, you can share ideas about how you have used the toolkit in your work so that others can learn from and adapt your experiences.

Best Practices

This section includes presentations that share the experiences

of several countries in improving family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) services.  Most are taken from a conference on family planning held in Kigali in March 2010, facilitated by the USAID Africa Office. The conference showcased countries that have made significant progress in family planning uptake.

Additionally, you can find  for a variety of family planning cost models for countries that help estimate the resources required to meet the goals of national family planning programs.

Do you have a suggested resource or want to post a comment or question?  Please contact the RH toolkit task force through the toolkit feedback form.

The Glion Call to Action on Family Planning and HIV/AIDS in Women and Childen

The linkages between reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention and care must be strengthened in order to achieve internationally agreed development goals. United Nations agencies have initiated a series of consultations to identify ways to build and reinforce these linkages. This Glion Call to Action reflects the consensus of the first consultation in May 2004 which focused on the linkage between family planning and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission. The call is set within the context of the objectives and actions agreed at the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD)

The New York Call to Commitment: Linking HIV/AIDS and Sexual Reproductive Health

The AIDS epidemic is a global catastrophe, responsible for over 20 million deaths worldwide, tens of millions of children left orphaned, and 40 million people living with HIV. Similarly, five hundred million people a year suffer from reproductive health morbidity or lack of access to modern contraceptives, and there are over half a million pregnancy related deaths each year. In the face of these unprecedented crises, UNFPA and UNAIDS, in collaboration with Family Care International, convened a high-level global consultation at the Rockefeller Foundation in New York on 7 June 2004.

Estimation of Access to Contraceptives in Malawi

Malawi faces immense reproductive health challenges, many of which could be ameliorated with an increase in contraceptive use. The main objective of this paper is to see if analysis of spatially referenced facility and health data can identify a gradient of access to specific services and determine whether and how the gradient affects the utilization of contraceptive services in Malawi. The methods employed in this paper include one of the first examples of kernel density estimation as a means of identifying the presence and health significance of access to health services. Results show that Malawian women who lived in areas of medium and low density family planning availability were significantly less likely to use modern contraception compared to women who live in high density areas.
