A major story in Malaysia during 2015 centred on Prime Minister Najib Razak. It was alleged that nearly $700 million had been transferred from the government-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) to Najib’s personal bank accounts. Najib acknowledged receiving funds but claimed they were donations from unnamed sources in the Middle East and were not from 1MDB. Several investigations were under way, including in the U.S. and in Switzerland. The search for Malaysian Airlines flight 370, missing in the Indian Ocean since March 2014, continued in 2015. Debris that washed up on the French island of Réunion in late July was believed to have come from the airplane. Vital statistics Birth rate per 1,000 population (2012): 17.2 (world avg. 19.5).
