MALIFAUX STORY ENCOUNTER TOURNAMENT

FOUNTAIN OF SOULS A Malifaux Story Encounter

STORY ENCOUNTER 1: TRACING THE SOURCE

The legends about the fountain of souls go back to the first expedition through the breach. Explorers have set out with maps and records on how to get there and never returned. Even the Neverborn heard the legends of this place, a secret location rumored to be from the days of the Tyrants. Through tireless research and stringing together the most unlikely hints, researchers believe they have uncovered a way to locate the Fountain. Malifaux is a dangerous place though, and it’s always better to send two groups where one might fail. Now you have tracked down the Aquifers that are supposed to feed the pool but you know you have competition. Will your group be able to trace the aquifers to their source before the others? Will you be the first to locate the Fountain of Souls? Setup: Place a Pool a Pool of Aether (Rules Manual page 88) terrain feature in the center of the board. This terrain feature is the Fountain of Souls. The Fountain of Souls has the following additional properties:

• All properties of a Pool of Aether (Rules Manual page 88) • Impassable (models cannot ignore this terrain by any means) • Height 5, blocking • Models starting an activation or ending a move while Base to Base with the terrain feature suffer an

uncheatable damage flip as follows: o Slow/Slow + Push 3” directly away/Paralyzed

Before deployment, place two 50mm Aquifer Marker on the centerline of the board. Each Aquifer Marker should be 6 inches from opposite neutral board edges. After deployment, each player places a 50mm Pool Marker completely within his or her deployment zone. Special: A model may perform a (1) Interact action while in base contact with the Pool Marker in that crew’s deployment zone to gain a Water Token.

• Insignificant models or models engaged with an enemy model cannot perform this action. • A model may not take this action while another model in its crew is carrying a Water Token.

If a model carrying a Water Token is removed from play, that Water Token is discarded. A model changing position on the table by an effect other than the Walk Action or leaving play discards the Water Token.

A model carrying a Water Token may discard the Water Token when suffering damage to perform a damage prevention flip.

A model carrying a Water Token may perform a (1) Interact action while in base contact with an Aquifer Marker to discard the Water Token and gain a Soul Stone. This action may be performed once per Player per Aquifer Marker. Insignificant models or models engaged with an enemy model cannot perform this action. Victory

• A Player scores 1 VP when one of their models exchanges a Water Token for a Soulstone. (This can result in a total of 2 VP, 1 per Aquifer Marker)

• A Player scores +2 VP if they are the first player to exchange a Water Token for a Soulstone with both Aquifer Markers

STORY ENCOUNTER 2: UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL

You did it; you traced the source of the Aquifers and located the Fountain of Souls. The fountain has its own protection and you now have to unlock access. The ritual was outlined and your leader has made sure everyone knows their parts. One last night of rest and then you will unlock the Fountain and claim its power. When morning arrives your Leader has disappeared. A note indicates that they left to start the preparations but scouting around the area did not uncover them. Maybe something happened within the pool, but the only way to find out is to unlock its power.

Setup: Place Pool a Pool of Aether (Rules Manual page 88) terrain feature in the center of the board. This terrain feature is the Fountain of Souls. In this scenario, the Fountain of Souls has 2 states, Locked and Unlocked.

The Locked Fountain of Souls has the following additional properties:

• All properties of a Pool of Aether (Rules Manual page 88) • Impassable (models cannot ignore this terrain by any means) • Height 5, blocking • Models starting an activation or moving into Base to Base with the terrain feature suffer an uncheatable

damage flip as follows: o Slow/Slow + Push 3” directly away/Paralyzed

The Unlocked Fountain of Souls has the following additional properties:

• All properties of a Pool of Aether (Rules Manual page 88) • Difficult Terrain (models cannot ignore this terrain by any means) • Dangerous Slow/Slow + Push 3” directly away/Paralyzed (models cannot ignore this terrain by any means) • Models can draw Line of Sight through the terrain feature. Targets gain Soft Cover if any LOS drawn

between attacker and target crosses the feature • Pool of Souls: Based on the number of models killed during the turn, models in play gain the following

effects: o 0 models killed – No Effect o 1 - 2 models killed – Hard to Wound 1 o 3 – 4 models killed – Slow to Die o 5 + models killed – Spirit

Before deployment, place two 50mm Aquifer Marker on the centerline of the board. Each Aquifer Marker should be 6 inches from opposite neutral board edges. Place 2 30mm Soul Counters on each Aquifer Marker, 1 marked for each player.

Special: Before crews are deployed, both players place their leader* completely within the Fountain of Souls in order of deployment. These models gain a Stasis Token with the following properties:

• Models holding a Stasis Token are immune to in game events. • Models holding a Stasis Token are chosen to activate during the normal activation order. On activation, the

model is restricted to 1 ap and may only choose to cast the following spell, which ignores Line of Sight and Immunities to WP.

o Manipulate Soul (CC:12 / Rst: Wp / Rg: 18) Target model immediately makes a (1) Action or Charge controlled by you. The Action selected may not cause the model to be killed or sacrificed as part of the Action.

Aquifer Markers: • Models in base contact with an Aquifer marker may perform a (1) Interact action for a Healing Flip. • A model may perform a (1) Interact Action while in base contact with an Aquifer Marker to pick up their

crews Soul Counters. Insignificant models or models engaged with an enemy model cannot perform this Interact action.

Soul Counters • If a model changes position on the table by an effect other than the Walk Action or leaves play, place the

Soul Counter onto an Aquifer Marker (only 1 “friendly” counter per marker). • A model holding a Soul Counter gains: • Spirit • (1) or (0) Unlock Potential: Discard 2 Soul Counters carried by up to 2 friendly models in base contact with

the Fountain of Souls. Place friendly master in base contact with this model*, then remove Stasis Token from Friendly Master. Immediately After the next Draw Phase, Remove Stasis Token from an Enemy Master and change Fountain of Souls from Locked to Unlocked status.

• Wk 5

Victory • A player score 1 VP the first time a model in his or her crew picks up a friendly Soul Counter from each

Aquifer Marker. (total of 2 VP, 1 for each counter) • The first player to successfully use Unlock Potential gains +2 VP.

STORY ENCOUNTER 3: FOUNTAIN OF SOULS

Energy rushed shot into the air as the Fountain unlocked. The energies permeated the area and now it comes down to who controls the Fountain itself. Tapping the fountain can be dangerous, but following the initial rush the energy is much easier to tap. Now it’s all about control!

Setup: Place Pool a Pool of Aether (Rules Manual page 88) terrain feature in the center of the board. This terrain feature is the Fountain of Souls. The Fountain of Souls has the following additional properties:

• Difficult Terrain (models cannot ignore this terrain by any means) • Models can draw Line of Sight through the terrain feature, but targets gain Soft Cover if any LOS drawn

between attacker and target crosses the feature • Models whose base is completely within the terrain gain:

o Magic Resistance 2 o Regeneration 1

• Pool of Souls: Based on the number of models killed during the turn, models in play gain the following effects:

o 0 models killed – No Effect o 1 - 2 models killed – Hard to Wound 1 o 3 – 4 models killed – Slow to Die o 5 + models killed - Spirit

Victory • At the end of each Turn after the first, you score 1 VP if the number of your models with bases completely

on the terrain piece is greater than the number of your opponent’s models with bases completely on the terrain piece, up to a maximum of 4 VP.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS

Q: Is there a recommended size for the fountain? A: Yes, the fountain should be as close to 3”x3” as possible, without bring smaller. Q: Do I drop a counter if I use Reckless? What about Driven by Purpose? A: If you change position on the table in a way that does not include taking the Walk action, then you drop the counter. Here are some examples:

• (1) Walk – Not dropped • (2) Charge – Dropped • (+1) Relentless – Not dropped since you discard a card for the Walk action • (+1) Driven by Purpose – dropped, you are not taking a Walk action • Lured – drops • Obeyed to (1) Walk – Not dropped • Obeyed to (2) Charge – Dropped

Q: In Story encounter 1: Tracing the Source, how does the exchange of Water token for Soulstones work and how many victory points can I get? A: A water token can be exchanged one time per encounter with EACH Aquifer Marker. This means that you can gain two soulstones and two victory points for exchanging water tokens. Q: In Story encounter 2: Unlocking the Potential, what happens if my master has an ability or affect that impacts the entire crew (such as Collodi)? A: The impact of a leader being in stasis is to limit their interaction with the game to the Obey spells until the fountain is unlocked. If you have an effect such as Collodi’s Dolls, your masters’ position is used and your dolls are not removed, but they are limited by the effect/ability as normal. In the case of Collodi, Marrionettes would not be able to move more than 8 inches away from Collodi. Collodi would still make dolls within 12 inches of him significant. If a marionette pulled strings, Collodi would not be affected. For questions, a TO will be able to further clarify specific situations. Q: In Story encounter 2: Unlocking the Potential, what happens to my leader if I am using Viktoria? A: Deploy one Viktoria into the pool as per the scenario special condition. The second Viktoria will enter play completely within 3 inches of the current Viktoria when the Stasis Counter is removed. Q: In Story encounter 2: Unlocking the Potential, what the heck is the intention of the Stasis stuff? A: Basically, your master is out of the game while holding a Stasis Counter. The Master may only interact with the board through the Manipulate Souls spell until the Fountain is unlocked. Rules for Collodi/Viktoria/etc are in place to not completely ruin the use of specific crews. Q: In Story encounter 3: Fountain of Souls, how and when can I earn victory points? A: No victory points can be earned during turn 1 of the game. At the end of Turn 2, count the number of models in your crew that are standing in the Fountain of Souls terrain, and count the number of models from your opponents’ crew in the Fountain of Souls terrain. If your models outnumber your opponents’ models, you gain a Victory Point. You cannot earn more than 4 victory points.
