Dear Mallacoota School Community,

It is with great excitement that I write this letter to introduce myself as the Principal of Mallacoota P-12. I feel very fortunate to be part of this school and community and look forward to supporting our students, staff and families moving forward.

As an educator and Principal, students are at the centre of my philosophy when it comes to teaching and learning, promotion of community involvement and all decision-making. I have high expectations of student learning, leadership, participation and aspiration. Over the past 15 years, I have taught and led in a variety of roles both here in Victoria and in Quebec, Canada.

I have taught all grades from Foundation to Year 11 and have been the Principal of Marlo Primary School for the last two years. Prior to entering education full time, I travelled around the world, working as a wilderness expedition guide, kayak instructor and white water rafting guide. I am fortunate to have my caring partner Tina, also a teacher and son Lucas who is studying year 10 at Corryong College.

I regard learning as a life-long process and understand the level of effort and commitment that working as an educator in a remote town such as Mallacoota requires. I have worked in Primary, Secondary and P-12 schools and have a good understanding of the benefits and challenges these schools face, particularly in terms of remoteness and building meaningful connections with and beyond the community. I am aware and understand the challenges that the school has faced in the past 18 months and, because of this, I am committed to learning about the specific needs of Mallacoota P-12 in the months to come and working collaboratively for the sake of our students and their future growth.

I genuinely look forward to joining the school community and supporting our families, students and staff in the future.

Warm regards, Matt Barlee

Secondary NoticeStudy halls and year 7 to 10 parent information sessions ( Covid permitting)Next Tuesday 3/8/21Secondary students welcome to stay after school for study halls 3.30-7pm with pizza and hot chocolate at around 4.30pm4.15pm Parent welcome with Deb Mathers (Acting principal) and then:4.30-7pm Pizza, hot chocolate and meet the staff for parents including 2 information sessions:5-5.45ish info session for Yr7&8 parents with Pete E and 7/8 teachers who are available to discuss current programs.6-6.45ish VCE/VCAL for Yr9&10 parents with Pete E and Later Years teachers who are available to discuss student selections for next year.

It would be fantastic to see as many secondary parents as possible for these important information sessions. Secondary Sport and PETerm 2 began with a group of students organising, fundraising, and heading off to Torquay for the State Surfing competition against other students in Victoria. Congratulations to all those involved.

The second major event for Term 2 was our school Cross Country, a major success. This was quickly followed by the East Gippsland Cross Country in Lakes Entrance. Hugo, Finn and Gypsy represented Mallacoota P-12 College fantastically with some top 15 finishes.

Our Friday after school sport program for last term was Thunder Hockey. All students from Grade 5 and up were invited. The event was run by our Sports and Rec students Kai and Isaac with Mr Berry being the supervising staff member. It was a hit with over 20 students participating over a 6-week program.

Our Tuesday lunch Mountain Biking Club continued with the assistance of Mr. Ody and Mr. Berry, our qualified coaches. Again, the program was offered to grade 5 and up, students continued to develop their bike skills and safety. A core group of 12 grade 5 and 6s loved the skills and dual slalom tracks.

Mallacoota P-12 College had a group of students represent the school in the East Gippsland Winter Sports interschool program. The group of students participated in a round robin competition of badminton. Our senior girls group won their round. Well done to all our students who went to Bairnsdale to represent our school.

Based on some senior student requests we have again been running Staff vs Student Friday lunch sports matches. While the focus has been our year 12s, students from year 11, 10 and even 8 have been participating. We have played basketball, volleyball, netball, ultimate frisbee, the current ladder shows 5 wins for the staff and 3 wins for the students.

Many sporting activities will be on offer for this term being, our school athletics carnival, Friday after school basketball, lunchtime mountain biking, Senior v’s Staff lunchtime sport and an end of term East Gippsland basketball tournament. This will provide our students with a wealth of choices to assist with their engagement and wellbeing.

Hope to see you on the courtPriya BerrySecondary Sports Coordinator

Art Industry Context DayLast Thursday our VCE students along with their teacher Nina Bursian were lucky enough to be able to attend the Art Industry Context Day virtual event. Throughout this event the students were able to engage in a Presentation of MWM French Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Curatorial and Conservation considerations along with Exhibition Design and Marketing. This virtual excursion will enable students to be better prepared for their SAC which they will need to complete and submit later in the semester. All students from the class enjoyed the event and were engaged in the learning and experience.

On Thursday 22nd July the VCE Studio Arts students attended an online excursion to NGV for their studies of Art Industry and Contexts. The exhibition on display was the French Impressionist Show, as part of NGV's Winter Masterpieces. While it was unfortunate that we couldn't visit Melbourne to view the wonderful exhibition and meet the curators, marketing team, conservators and designers in person, it was fantastic that we still got the chance to talk to the team virtually, ask any questions and receive advice on our next SAC and the end of year exam. Usually, the Studio Arts class has to travel to see NGV, as it is an essential part of the Studio Arts Study Design requirements. This causes students to miss out on other important subjects and while it is fabulous to physically go to the gallery, it can be difficult to schedule it amongst the busy Year 12 timetable. I really enjoyed being able to sit in the sunshine and listen to the amazing presenters talk about their passions, as well as take extensive notes to give me good, solid foundations for the tasks ahead. Thanks to Nina Bursian and the rest of the organisers, as well as the Acting Principal Deb, who organised funding for the online event. Airly

On Thursday 22nd July we were lucky enough to take part in the Industry Contexts Virtual Excursion and NGV French Impressionism exhibitionas we were unable to go to Melbourne due to the current COVID19 pandemic. I found the artworks in the French exhibition to be truly inspiring, with my favourite artists being Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. I found it really interesting learning about the many different departments and people involved in the international exchange as well as the shock of how much planning is involved. The level of care when shipping the artworks and many steps of doing condition reports and then designing the layout which would allow for the best experience of the viewer. Taylor
