Master of Arts in Science EducationThe Master of Arts in Science Education in theMallinson Institute for Science Education at WesternMichigan University is designed for anyone with a strong interest in science and the teaching of science,particularly primary and secondary teachers.
The program helps students improve their knowledgeof science as well as their teaching expertise. The MArequires 10 courses, 30 credit hours, that can becompleted exclusively online.
Program Features• In most school districts courses will apply toward continuing education credits.
• Michigan Secondary DI endorsement is available, either with or without the MA.
• Courses available year-round, including summers.
• Courses can be taken in any order.
• No thesis, project, or teaching required.
• Up to 6 graduate credits can be transferred in from another institution.
The Science Education ProgramOur science education program builds upon coreknowledge of science and pedagogy while leaving youroom to choose electives based on your academicinterests and professional goals.
This 10-course degree can be completed at your ownpace. It is designed to be completed in 10 consecutivesemesters (2.5 years) by working teachers who wish totake only one course at at time. It can be completed in less time if more than one course is taken each semester.
This master’s program is an approved educatorpreparation program by the Michigan Department ofEducation, and its courses plus practicum can allow youto earn your Integrated Science (DI) endorsement.
AdmissionApplications are accepted on an ongoing basis, allowingstudents to begin coursework during the fall, spring orsummer semesters.
