Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,

School disco. Wow! What a fabulous night!! Thank you so much to all our #teammalmsbury members who helped make the night such a success. We had parents who provided home made goodies for the snack stall, cooked the BBQ, decorated the space, set up, cleaned up and more! We appreciate all of you so much! We raised $892! That’s AMAZING!! A special thank you to Andrew Irvine who provided the sound system and fog machine. And that parent ‘Thriller’ flash mob was great! Writing Strategies in Grade 5/6. The 5/6 classroom has been a hive of activity recently,

as students worked feverishly to get their writing ready

for our Writer’s Festival. While everyone was tremen-

dously proud to see their writing on display, and to

share that with the school community, it took a lot of

hard work to make sure they were presenting their

best writing.

Our focus over the last couple of weeks has been on

identifying and following a process of drafting, editing,

conferencing and publishing our writing. This process

has been frustrating for some students, who just want

their writing finished, but has definitely helped them to

develop their ideas. Students have been practising ed-

iting and peer-editing – reading a classmate’s writing

and providing compliments, suggestions and correc-

tions. They have also been adjusting to having to re-

work or re-draft their writing, as they take on feedback

from classmates or their teacher to make sure they are

conveying their meaning in the best possible way. This

has meant simply changing a word here or there for

some students, and re-writing whole sections for oth-

ers.

Finally, students have been challenged to consider how

best to present their finished writing – handwritten or

typed, picture or no picture, fancy heading or plain

print – so many decisions! The task of bringing a piece

of writing from a small kernel of an idea, all the way to

a finished piece is something we are still working on,

but the enthusiasm and success of our Writer’s Festival

has certainly been a great motivator to keep honing

our craft.

News from 3/4. This week in Grade 3/4 we have been super excited to participate in the inaugural Malmsbury PS Writer’s fes-tival! We busily finished preparing our pieces of writing to enter into the festival, and on Wednesday we were all excited to welcome our special guests to join us for a Community Write. We used different writing prompts from our literacy shelf– pictures, sentence starters and character, setting an problem cards. To make our writing more inter-esting we focused on using some of our Powerful Writing strategies such as Alliteration, Show not tell, Onomatopoeia and the Power of Three. Once we had spent some time on our Community Write it was time for the festival to be officially opened. We were all thrilled to see the wonderful books that Lisa Chesters donated to our school and wished that on our trip to the library today they were ready to borrow already– we can’t wait to get stuck in to reading them! In reading this week we have been focussed on fluency. Fluency has three aspects– pace, accuracy and expres-sion. Our class book at the moment is Tashi. To demon-strate how important fluency is to our understanding of texts Pixy read the class a page of the book as badly as she could– no emotion, stopping and starting at ran-dom places and speeding up or slowing down too much. The students were only able to recall one or two words or phrases and no-one really knew what had happened. Pixy read the page again fluently and the whole class were able to give a wonderful summary of what had happened. Everyone was surprised by just how much of a difference it made to our understanding of the text. Practising using voices when reading dia-logue in texts can be one great way to work on fluency. In maths we have been continuing our work using MAB to help solve vertical addition and subtraction. We have also been looking at patterns and sequencing, and using a function machine to create and identify patterns. Classroom teachers have been observing each other teaching maths this week, focussing particularly on the structure of our lessons. It was a pleasure to have Siobhan and Carolyn observing in our room on Tuesday and everyone did a great job of focussing on their learning and not being distracted by the two extra adults in the room. It is always great when we are able to work as a team to improve our teaching practice and support each oth-er– something that happens on a daily basis in lots of small ways but it is great to get to do it in bigger ways as well.

For Health we have been working on acknowledging and celebrating the differences and similarities in each other and our families. In PE we have been working on our kicking accuracy. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it along to the Writer’s Festival, you helped make it a fantastic afternoon. From Pixy, Sarah and Grade 3/4.

Maths in Grade 1/2. This week the grade 1/2’s have been learning to tell the time. They have been practicing reading o’clock and half past times. We have been thinking about how long it takes us to complete a task. We estimated that it would take 30 seconds to do 25 star jumps. We then timed how long it actually took using the stop watch. Can you do 25 start jumps in 30 seconds? How long would it take to do 100? From Jade and 1/2.

Malmsbury PS OSHC! Hi Everyone,

This week we have been finding creative ways to accommodate everyone's wishes. For example,

some of us can play with toys and chalk on the basketball court while someone else shoots hoops.

There is always a need for some negotiation and compromise, but it's great to practice these skills

and be as flexible as possible so that everyone gets to do their favourite activities at OSHC. We have

lots of great construction toys at OSHC, but Jordan got creative this week with the wooden pegs! He

made some aeroplanes and Hayley made a crocodile and Tobias made a bird. Retro old school fun!

Tobias finished off the painting of the postbox this week. It's “the Queen's Royal Postbox” because it

is so fancy with gold and silver details. Now we can start making envelopes and writing letters to

post.

From Team Malmsbury. Here are your responses to our Survey Monkey ques-tion 'How do you think the school could reduce its waste and rubbish?'

Education, Incentives, Prizes.

*Make Waste Free Wednesdays competition every-

day. What about a weekly prize (trophy made of recy-

cled material) for the classroom that generates the

least amount of rubbish each week? *Have the kids pack their rubbish away back in their lunch box, so it is visible to parents. *Analyse current waste and find ways to reduce it/ oth-er uses for it. Incorporate into a learning experience (like they did for War On Waste.) *Link in with Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group waste reduction projects *Educate kids and parents on how to identify single use plastics and how to find alternatives e.g reusable con-tainers. Especially with lunch box options. Promote a website that gives ideas about low impact household products & reducing single use plastics e.g plasticfree-july.org *Re-invent or freshen the Malmsbury Environmental Action League (MEAL) group again to better promote them community wide. Encourage re-use and recycling *Set up a soft plastics collection to recycle at Woolies with a parent roster to drop it off *Better composting. Set up a worm farm to eat shred-ded paper waste rather than recycle it. They will also eat food scraps that the chickens won't. And the worm juice can go on the garden and on planted trees. *Do we have a council wheely bin for mixed waste re-cycling? Most recycling skips are for paper/cardboard only. *Delving into exactly what programs are setup and will collect what may seem to be rubbish e.g empty paint tins and batteries *Collect as much as possible that could be used in the art room. Have a recycling craft session and get kids involved in creating art out of it. Reduce packaging/ single-use products *Aim for Waste Free events. On lunch order days and BBQ days etc, use washable plates and cut-lery. Encourage kids to wash up or take their plate home to wash. *Could make this a fundraiser to make a ‘souvenir’ Malmsbury plate & cup, if costs aren’t too high?? Per-haps it could be a Malmsbury (town) plate & cup rather than a Malmsbury Primary school one, that way we may be able to sell it to the wider community *Try to bulk purchase certain items so there is less

packaging. Use biodegradable cleaning products: kitch-en sponges, dish brush, bar of soap vs soap dispenser, etc. *Make & sell beeswax wraps, or fundraising companies like Sticky Beaks sell reusable sandwich holder things. Maybe we could explore the feasibility of a bulk purchase of alternate types of wrapping such as bees-wax wraps and washable reusable pouches or even better, source a local, this may even be a good fund-raising opportunity! *Old school brown paper bags (not the waxy ones) are very inexpensive and can be recycled or composted. Thank you once again for these fantastic ideas. These will be discussed and incorporated into our school envi-ronmental management plan. You will even see some changes happening in the coming weeks!

Lunchbox recipe!

Sift together 140g self-raising flour, 85g wholemeal flour (reserving about 2 tbsp of the bran), ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2 tsp ground cinnamon and a pinch salt.

Fold dry mix into the wet one. Cut out a dozen 10cm squares of baking parchment and place in the holes of a muffin tin.

Spoon mixture into tin, sprinkle with bran and a few sunflower seeds.
