WELCOMETO 2013.

--Different perspectives and styles give 2013 its particular character: epic Australian writing, contemporary dance, Indigenous languages, Soviet satire, and new musical composition are just some of the colours that give the season its vibrancy. They’re as provocative as they are fun, as visceral as they are affirming and always a little irreverent. Each project has been handpicked for the power of its ideas and for its potential to take us into surprising corners of the imagination. But the overall season has also been curated to have shape, breadth and balance. At the heart of this is the idea of exploration: each production contributes to a bigger, year-long conversation about what’s happening in our world.

Malthouse Theatre uses high-octane performance and entertainment as its currency. It tackles public subjects and themes that energise our thinking, quicken our emotion, and allow us to participate more wholeheartedly in the questions that affect our lives. It’s a theatre that uses its vast expressive range as an engine for change.

In 2013, three productions have come from the Engine Room, the research and development arm of our company that gives us the chance to test ideas and the confidence to take on ambitious and difficult projects. These works will continue to be reflected through future seasons, along with the best of what we’ve seen elsewhere and our collaborations with other companies.

Above all, we hope that you enjoy the simple experience of going to the theatre. There is no ‘right’ way of responding to what we do. We welcome debate and differences of opinion. No matter what your age, background, academic record or clothing label, The Malthouse is a welcoming space that allows you to relax and talk, hang out with the artists over a drink and discuss what you’ve seen. Our audiences help us articulate the next set of questions to tackle.

--There’s nothing so dramatic as a weekend with the family...

--A storm shakes the Gleason homestead, but it’s the tempest inside that spells the family’s end. 25 years after its premiere, Stephen Sewell’s portrait of a monstrous patriarch who would be the country’s king remains startlingly relevant. An uncanny sense of regression hangs over an all-too-familiar portrait of Australian politics in which power, fear and violence are inextricable.

PerformersTobiah Booth-RemmersLisa Griffi thsMarcus Louend

--A puzzle of countless pieces.

--A set of characters discovers the hidden stories of pop-cultural icons from the high heel to the BMX bike. Meeting surprising and violent ends, bodies and objects collide via a sinister vanishing screen. From rigor mortis to The Karate Kid, Larissa McGowan’s (Australian Dance Theatre, So You Think You Can Dance) long-running fascination with the skeletal form has resulted in a work that cuts to the quick with sharp angles, acute physical strength and a choreographic pace that has the dancers’ very bones popping, locking and pulsing in place.

Malthouse Theatre & Chunky Move present247 DAYS

Choreographed byChoreographed byAnouk van Dijk

PerformersLeif HellandLauren Langlois

--A dynamic new work from Chunky Move.

--How do we view the world? How does the world view us? Do we behave as expected, or accept who we truly are? And, if we could observe ourselves in an unguarded moment, what would we see? In this world premiere, Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk collides what has already been with what could be, challenging us to examine the importance of the individual. 247 Days is an exploration of human dynamics within the context of a shifting Australian landscape.

Cast Includes

--It’s only fun and games if someone gets hurt.

--Alice and Edgar’s marriage would be perfect, if they didn’t want each other dead. In this blistering jet-black comedy, 20th century master Friedrich Dürrenmatt has created an electric adaptation of a Strindberg classic, stripping away the sentiment to deliver a depiction of wedded hell as brutally hilarious as a wrestling match refereed by Beckett.

--A thriller of charismatic attraction.

--An actress loses her power to speak and soon finds the boundaries between her identity and that of her nurse dangerously unstable. Adena Jacobs’ astonishing re-imagining of Ingmar Bergman’s iconic film was performed to universal praise from critics and audiences alike in 2012. Now, Malthouse Theatre rekindles the flame that lies at the heart of this quietly devastating work.

THE DRAGONby Evgeny Shwarz

Set & Costume DesignSet & Costume DesignAnna Tregloan

Cast IncludesJimi Bani

--A witty, music-filled fairytale of heroes and villains.

--A dragon has held sway over a cowering village for centuries, when a brave Lancelot arrives to vanquish the beast. The problem? The townsfolk have become quite accustomed to the tyrant, actually.

Beneath this uproarious satire lies a keen-witted exploration of the cycles of corruption and complicity that govern our society and the parts we play in our own downfall. Melbourne’s comic maestros Tripod will bring original music to the Malthouse Theatre stage — as well as playing the riotous three-headed monster — alongside Jimi Bani and Nikki Shiels, in this fanciful production directed by Marion Potts.

WHITE RABBIT, RED RABBITWHITE RABBIT, RED RABBITby Nassim Soleimanpour

Shareena Clanton

Genevieve MorrisBrian Nankervis

Meredith Penman

Magda Szubanski

--An unnerving comedy of human freedom that defies national boundaries, censorship... and description.

--Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour’s audacious theatrical experiment will come as a shock — not least to the performer handed the script the moment they walk on stage. A different unsuspecting performer will take the stage each night, joining the audience on a journey into the unknown; stumbling upon the humorous, terrifying and utterly personal. This internationally acclaimed new work forges connections across time and continents. We just can’t promise everyone will make it out alive.

--“there’s a magnetic mind behind the prose. Rabbit is a lightly comic, deceptively discursive, meta-theatrical monologue” San Francisco Chronicle

--A dangerous and delectable fable of love, ex-wives and monsters.

--Angela Carter’s feminist classic goes head-to-head with Bartok’s mighty opera in this cross-artform battle to the death. The fairytale of Bluebeard’s imperilled young bride has puzzled and fascinated artists for centuries. It now becomes the site of a struggle both intimate and mythic, lavish and chilling. Matthew Lutton directs this sensuous production, as Alison Whyte leads the audience on a journey into darkness. Some doors are locked for a reason.

--“a multifaceted glittering diamond reflecting and refracting a variety of portraits of desire and sexuality.” The Guardian on Angela Carter’s novel

Directed byDirected byAnne-Louise Sarks

Set & Costume DesignSet & Costume DesignRalph Myers

--Fortune favours the psychic.

--For more than a decade, playwright Lally Katz has been one of Australia’s foremost fabulists, trekking off to the furthest coasts of the imagination and returning with her findings. Now she introduces to the stage one of her most unexpected subjects: herself. She might be alone on the stage but she’s far from lonely, bringing with her a cast of characters — from fortune tellers to mystics to Mississippi Evangelicals — encountered on the quest to cure her curses. Known for delving into fantasy, this writer proves art imitates life.

Created byCreated byHamish Fletcher, Jared Lewis, Phillip McInnes, Ian Pidd, Tamara Rewse & Sam Routledge

--The furniture gets furious!

ENGINE ROOM.

The most precious resource is time, and Malthouse Theatre’s research and development arm is dedicated to making art with a long view. Engaging with artists and companies over months and years, the Engine Room allows us to create and nurture work as it develops at its own pace, rather than imposing a hurried schedule. Listen carefully: you can hear the motors hum.

HELIUM.

Potent contemporary practice as created by Australia’s most daring independent makers, Helium brings together fi ve works for a season that’s bound to raise eyebrows. Check your expectations at the door and be ready for performances that will rattle your senses, rev up your imagination and keep you forever on your toes. The 2013 Helium season will be announced in June 2013.

PROMPT.

Young people aren’t just audiences, they’re the artists of today. Prompt is Malthouse Theatre’s Education program, providing the tools and conversations to help create relationships that will last a lifetime, sparking new generations of thinkers, critics, provocateurs and performers.

GREENLIGHT.

Malthouse Theatre’s ongoing investigation into the creation of sustainable theatre practice is recognised across Australia. 2013 sees these aspirations undimmed as the company continues to expand its dialogue with like-minded thinkers conscious of our future, and confi rms its commitment to cultural change from the ground up.

--More than just the mainstage, Malthouse Theatre is the gateway to boundless wild adventures.
