TRANSCRIPT
Summer is upon us and
another busy school year
filled with memories and
achievements has come to an
end! Malvern students have
once again reached new
heights in academics, athlet-
ics and the arts. Our students
showcased their many talents
in various productions such
as Docudramas, Battle of the
Bands, Fashion Show, Board-
walk Ball and our expanded
Art Exhibit.
Our school continues to
shine in many sports through-
out the city and the province.
Sincere congratulations go
out to our coaches, advisors
and athletes who have made
us very proud of their incredi-
ble dedication and accom-
plishments. Many teams were
active during our Spring
Sports Season. This year for
the first time Malvern had its
first ever Ultimate Frisbee
Team which competed enthu-
siastically against more expe-
rienced teams. We look for-
ward to their fast paced play
next year! Our Boys Baseball
team is in the process of re-
building and Mr. Salvatore
has declared their play this
season indicates they have a
very promising future for next
year. We had 2 Girls Soccer
teams this year with the Tier 1
team losing in the first round
of playoffs. Our Boys Rugby
team is also in a growth year
and Mr. Underwood is very
encouraged with his Grade 9
players and optimistic about
our play for next year. Our
Track and Field Team
coached by Ms Blackmore
had a very successful season
with a large number of ath-
letes going on to OFSAA. Con-
gratulations to Kersti Sorra who
placed 8th in triple jump, Amy
Carpenter who placed 8th in
shot put, Sarah Emilio who was
4th in the 1500 meter race and
Peter Nikolovski who placed 8th
in shot put and brought home
the Bronze Medal in discus.
Our Boys Lacrosse Team head-
ed by Mr. Steel made us all
very proud as they were once
again City Champions and went
on to represent us at the OF-
SAA Lacrosse Festival. Finally,
kudos to our Girls Rugby Team
coached by Ms Gage and Ms
Tyrell who were City Champions
for the third year in a row and
made their incredible 4th trip to
OFSAA where they placed 5th. I
am also very proud to mention
that Ms Gage and Ms Tyrell
were the recent recipients of 2
very prestigious TDSSAA Lead-
ership Awards. Ms Gage won
the Doug Lougheed award for
her outstanding leadership in
athletics and Ms Tyrell the
TDSSAA Leadership Award for
her exceptional contributions to
high school sports. Malvern is
indeed very fortunate to have
such exceptional teachers and
coaches on staff.
Malvern students once again
had tremendous opportunities
for travel and excursions this
year. In addition to many local
and out of province excursions
such as Stratford and Bark
Lake they were able to travel to
New York, Boston, the Galapa-
gos, Greece, Italy, France and
Vimy Ridge. These wonderful
learning experiences take
place because our teachers
give up a lot of their time and
energy to make sure that our
students get the most out of
their time at school inside and
outside the classroom. A sin-
cere thank you to our teachers
and support staff for all that
they do each day for our stu-
dents.
I am extremely pleased to
announce that for the third
year in a row Malvern has
achieved Platinum Level desig-
nation for Eco Schools. In such
an old building with a pool re-
quiring a tremendous amount
of energy this is not an easy
award to achieve. Thanks to
Mr. Steel, Ms Farintosh and
Eco Schools Council president
Leila White who worked with
our staff, students and Science
Club members to make this
possible. Finally, various stu-
dent groups showed all of us
that they really do care for the
less fortunate. The MSAA Spor-
tathon held in March raised
over $2,500.00 with the bulk
of the proceeds going to sup-
port the Food Bank at Corvette
PS. As well, our popular and
well attended “Malvern’s Night
Out” Fashion Show raised over
$3,600.00 for the Red Door
Shelter.
Our Parents and Community
members continue to work
hard to make Malvern a better
place. The last phase of our
War Memorial Restoration in-
cluded a beautification plan of
the area surrounding our War
Memorial. Thanks to the lead-
ership of Ms. Farintosh and
members of the Beaches Gar-
den Society who worked togeth-
er with neighbours and Malvern
students in planting 2 beautiful
new gardens in front of the
school. They hope to plant red
and black tulips this fall and
continually add to their work as
time goes on. Many thanks to
our parents headed by co-chair
Casey Fleming as well as Diane

Wyman and David Studer who are work-
ing on updating our Grade 9 parent hand-
book which will be distributed to our new
parents in August. I would also like to
acknowledge our Home and School Coun-
cil Executive comprised of Casey Fleming,
Diane Wyman, Vicky Tsorlinis and Dianne
Chadwick who have done an outstanding
job keeping parents informed, supporting
our Commencement, inviting guest speak-
ers for parents and helping organize the
Boardwalk Ball. Finally, I do want to recog-
nize our wonderful “Basket Queen and
Malvern Ambassador Extraordinaire”
Vicky Tsorlinis who has worked tirelessly
since September in planning every aspect
of an incredibly successful fundraising
marathon which culminates with our June
Boardwalk Ball held at Bluffers Restau-
rant on June 8th. The evening featuring
the talents of our outstanding music stu-
dents led by Mr. Falla and Ms Norris
raised over $6,000.00 for Commence-
ment awards and bursaries for our gradu-
ates. Well done Vicky and all of our par-
ents who helped out with this event! It
was certainly an evening to remember.
We are already busy planning for the
next school year. Once again we will have
early registration dates on August 29th
and 30th for picking up timetables and
agendas. We are requesting that students
bring $75.00 with them which will cover
the cost of yearbooks, agendas, school
photo cards, fridge magnets as well as
support for our tremendous array of
clubs, teams and extra -curricular pro-
grams. Please see the enclosed Registra-
tion Bulletin for more details. Please note
that changes to the timetables in Septem-
ber may only be considered due to con-
flicts, summer school results or gradua-
tion requirements. Students are expected
to carry their courses through June once
programs have been settled in Septem-
ber. Withdrawal in a course will only be
considered if a student has made a sin-
cere effort in the course.
There are a number of staff members
who will sadly not be with us next year. I
would like to extend my best wishes to
the following valued staff members who
will not be returning to Malvern in Sep-
tember: Mr. Lawrence, Ms Acorn, Ms Fon-
tes, Ms Blackmore, Ms Farintosh, Ms
Khan, Ms Furgiuele and Mr. Bergeron. All
the best next year to Ms Grzela in our
Guidance Department who will moving to
Monarch Park CI as the new Assistant
Curriculum Leader for Guidance. We also
have 4 retirements of key individuals who
will start new life adventures this July: Ms
Copeland our Assistant Curriculum Leader
for Guidance has been at Malvern since
2001, Mr. Fallis in our English Depart-
ment here since 1994, Ms Bradbeer in
our Special Education and English areas
has been with us since 1980 and Ms
Rutledge our invaluable support on so
many levels in the Main office will be leav-
ing us after over 24 years at Malvern. A
sincere thank you goes out to all depart-
ing staff for your many years of service to
staff, students and parents here at Mal-
vern. We are sad to see you go and you
will be sorely missed!
Classes for the fall term will begin with a
special schedule Tuesday September 4th.
Grade 9 students will report to the audito-
rium at 9:00 a.m. and will be dismissed
by 11:30 a.m. Students in grades 10 to
12 should report to school by 1:00 p.m.
Master lists of home form classrooms will
be posted in several locations on the first
floor. Students should locate their home
form classes, be in attendance by 1:00
p.m. and will be dismissed by 2:00 p.m.
School will resume with a regular sched-
ule for all students on Wednesday Sep-
tember 5th.
This year we worked very hard with our
parents, staff, peer leaders and Equity
Council members to incorporate anti-
hazing initiatives in our curriculum and
our activities such as our Equity Confer-
ence, Pink Day and Peace Week. The
efforts are reaping their rewards as we
have had a noticeable positive improve-
ment in school in the tone and no reports
of any hazing incidents last September.
We hope to continue these measures as
well as special activities and schedules
planned for our new Grade 9 students in
September along with our Peer Leaders.
We fully expect that all of our Grade 10 to
12 students will continue to model and
demonstrate appropriate caring and com-
passionate behavior to appropriately wel-
come our new Grade 9 students.
In closing, I want to sincerely thank all of
the members of the Malvern Community
for their tremendous support throughout
the year and wish all of you a safe, peace-
ful and enjoyable summer!

We Have a Garden!
Thank you to all who helped make our
Malvern garden a success. The Beaches
Garden Society along with Lisa Orridge
(local garden designer) and many Malvern
students helped plant two beds on Mal-
vern Ave. The two gardens have native
plants as well as weeping white pines to
commemorate the sacrifice of past Mal-
vern grads. A large part of the funding
came from the MRBS as well as a local
Canadian Tire grant. Many of our classes,
including our EcoSchools club, helped in
prepping the beds, weeding, digging
holes, spreading mulch and soil. A huge
thank you to our two neighbourhood vol-
unteers who are watering the beds
throughout the summer. This could not
have been accomplished without all of
your help!

“That’s a famous school.”
Is what a fellow said to me recently in a
downtown elevator. You see I was wear-
ing a Malvern coaching jacket.
Malvern is a prestigious public high
school with a long and illustrious history.
Parents, alumni, teachers, students and
the Beaches community want it to be the
best school it can be.
These days there are things the Toronto
District School Board can’t fund. Like
some school trips, athletic equipment,
musical instruments, academic awards,
auditorium seats and more. The list is
long. And that is where the Onward Mal-
vern Foundation comes in. Malvern
stakeholders can donate towards school
projects and receive an income tax re-
ceipt. This year we are featuring the
2012 Malvern Catalogue. To donate,
please visit www.Canadahelps.org. And if
you have any questions please don’t hesi-

New York City scheduled for Thanksgiving
of 2013. It seems like a long way away,
but some students may want to consider
where they want this summer’s employ-
ment money to go. It’s important to start
saving now, because payment for the trip
will begin part way through the coming
school year. Most of the payment will be
completed before the start of next sum-
mer, so it’s this summer’s money that
counts. Students going into gr. 10 and 11
for September 2012 will be offered the
opportunity to attend this fabulous trip.
More information will follow in the fall.

Thank you to Erin Boyd and Katarina
Young, for co-coordinating this event as
well as many others. As both Erin and
Katarina are graduating next year, next
year’s coordinators are Sara Jarvis and
Heather Kee. Cecily Boyd and Justine
Tenzer grade 10 students, will also be
helping to recruit more members in Sep-
tember. Come out and join us and share a
part of life you may never otherwise expe-
rience.

This year the Malvern Best Buddies Chap-
ter engaged in another rewarding year
with our Buddies at Danforth Technical
and Collegiate Institute. Other than our
activity filled visits with the Danforth
chapter, Malvern hosted a spectacular
day of games, drumming and lunch dur-
ing Equity Week. A shout out to Mr. Kalim
for leading the very popular drumming
circle at the event. Visit the MCI Clubs

The Malvern Art Show on May 3 was a
huge success. Everyone I spoke to was
very impressed with the quality of work on
display. One parent even said, “I had no
idea there was such a good art program
at Malvern!” We owe it all to the students,
really. Their contributions to the show
were very impressive. The Beach Metro
News did a feature photo on their front
page of Emma Burkeitt, pictured with her
artwork and SNAP magazine included a
section in one of their papers with a few
photos of guests and artwork.
It is our hope that we will do another show
next year, expanding into other depart-
ments within the school, so keep your
eyes open for that.

The Peer Leaders have been busy prepar-
ing for the next group of Grade Nine stu-
dents. With the changing of the guards,
we are happy to announce that Adrian
Hutcheson and Jaimie Wilson are taking
on the role of Super Captains for 2012 –
2013 school year. We would like to thank
Catharine MacKeigan and Dylan Ciccarelli
for their outstanding contribution to the
Peer Leader group this past year. Also,
thanks to the graduating Peer Leaders
who dedicated their time and energy to
ensuring that the transition for the Grade
Nine students to High School was a mem-
orable one.
Our new Peer Leaders will be participating
in some training prior to the first week of
school. The first week of school will be a
busy one with the Peer Leaders organiz-
ing activities for the Grade Nines as well
as ensuring that students arrive and de-
part safely from school.
We would like to thank all of the Peer
Leaders for their contribution to school
life here at Malvern. We would also like
to thank Ms. Copeland for all of her sup-
port over the many years that she has
been in Guidance. We hope that she
enjoys her time in retirement.

To say this year has been busy is a bit of
an understatement. For example, we
performed at Red and Black Day, Board-
walk Ball, Graduation, Parents nights,
Winter and Spring Concerts, Assemblies,
Parades, and the Music Annual Depart-
ment's Fundraising Dance. It also brought
on some new and exciting performance
opportunities such as the jazz Choir and
jazz Combo performances at a fundraiser
for the Turner Syndrome Society of Cana-
da, the marching band in a Coca Cola
commercial, Jazz Vespers at Beach United
church, Courcelette's 100th anniversary,
jazz night with the Jazz 91.1FM Youth
Band, and the featured performances of
the concert choir and senior concert band
at Massey Hall for the Sounds of Toronto
evening.
Every year we perform at music festivals.
This year our Jr. Concert Band performed
at the York Region Arts Alive festival
achieving a Bronze rating. As part of our
music trip to Boston, Massachusetts our
senior concert band, senior jazz band,
jazz choir, and girls choir performed at
the Worldstrides Heritage Performance
Festival where we received high acco-
lades and large trophies. A great trip had
by all.
Laura Norris and I would like to thank our
Music Parents Council for their effort this
year for helping out at concerts, fundrais-

Congratulations to all members of Mal-
vern’s track and field team for a spectac-
ular season. All of the hard practices paid
off, as our athletes had many outstanding
performances at the meets we attended.
At the South Regional Championships,
our team placed fourth overall and
brought home 11 gold, 10 silver, and 10
bronze medals. We were also the Senior
Girls Champions in the South Region!
Nineteen athletes made it on to the Metro
Championships, where they would com-
pete for a spot at OFSAA. At Metros, Amy
Carpenter placed 1st in shotput and Ker-
sti Sorra was 1st in triple jump. Peter
Nikolovski was 1st in discus and 2nd in
shotput. Adrianna So was 4th in triple
jump and Jessica Lemieux was 3rd in long
jump. Roz Harvey Ridout and Dylan Cic-
carelli both placed 4th in the sprint hur-
dles. Kate McCubbin-Sprack was 3rd and
Sarah Emilio finished 4th in the 3000m.
Special mention goes out to the senior
girls relay team who was yet again so
close to qualifying, placing 5th with a new
best time of 51.77 seconds in the
4x100m relay.
At OFSAA, Peter Nikolovski won the
bronze in discus and finished 8th in shot-
put. Sarah Emilio ran a personal best time
of 10:02 in the 3000m, finishing 4th and
beating her time from last year at OFSAA
by 18 seconds! Kersti Sorra finished 7th in
triple jump and Amy Carpenter placed 8th
in shotput. Adrianna, Jess, Kate, Roz and

Track Team’s Spectacular Season!
This year, as a result of a great turnout at
tryouts, we were able to have both a Tier I
and Tier II Girls Rugby team. The Tier II
team consisted of mostly grade 9 stu-
dents who were eager and willing to learn.
They played their hearts out and never
gave up. We look forward to seeing all of
the players again next year.
The Tier I team had another undefeated
season and went to Ottawa for the fourth
time to participate in the OFSAA Champi-
onships. They battled in a tough first-
round against Sacred Heart, scoring in
the final minutes of the game. Round -
two saw the team play against a deter-
mined St. Peter’s Secondary School. Un-
fortunately, the girls were not able to
score and lost that battle. The pride of
wearing the Malvern jersey came through
when the team defeated a feisty Mayfield
team by a score of 8 – 7 in their friendly
match. Congratulations to the girls on a
very exciting season. We would like to
take this opportunity to wish our graduat-
ing group: Margaux Daly, Catharine
MacKeigan, Abi Moody, Jamie Porter, and
Katarina Young all the best in their future
endeavours.
Coach Tyrell
Dylan also competed at OFSAA and did
very well this season!
All team members should be proud of the
efforts they put forth and the success
they achieved throughout the season.
Congrats to our MVA’s Adrianna So, Peter
Nikolovski, and Jordan O’Connor. Good
luck next year .

Pre-Season
Malvern Collegiate Institute
The 2012 version of Malvern rugby fea-
tured a bantam and a senior team. The
bantam team was made up of a spirited
group of grade 9s who demonstrated en-
tertaining wit off the field and sparkling
rugby on the field. Malvern ran into a few
injury problems mid-season and suffered
two losses. The team returned to full
strength and form at the end of the sea-
son handing Northern their only loss and
winning their final game over a massive
Laurier squad. A great combination of
speed and skill in the backfield and fitness
and determination in the forwards will
make this a squad to be reckoned with in
the future. A 2014 OFSAA date is surely in
the cards.
The senior team boasted a large number
of players this year, many of them totally
new to the game. The Black Knights post-
ed some big wins during the regular sea-
son over Leaside, Humberside, Forest Hill,
and North Toronto, but suffered defeats to
Northern and Lawrence Park. The city
semi-final versus Northern was a game
that could have gone our way, but some
unfortunate events resulted in a loss. The
third place finish was good enough to
qualify Malvern for the city play downs. On
a hot, humid day, the lads gave a spirited
effort, but were unable to keep pace with
Thomson. We say thanks and good luck to
our graduating players, and to those re-
turning, start working on that fitness now!

Successful Season for the Lady

Boys’ Rugby
The Varsity Boys baseball
team had a successful
rebuilding year finishing
4th in the south region
Tier 1 league. The 2012
edition Black Knights
included some of the
most talented junior aged players in the
city. Despite only having one senior aged
starter the team compiled a 4-3-1 record
and seemed poised to make a run deep
into the playoffs. In the city quarterfinals
against Humberside the boys played a
hard fought game but fell in 10 innings.
The team will surely learn from these
tough games and be ready to make a run
for the City Championships in 2013.

All boys interested in playing Jr. & Sr.
football for Malvern this fall are asked to
attend a mini-camp held on August 28th,
29th & 30th, from 11:00 am -1:00 pm on
the Malvern field. All grade nine students
are encouraged to attend the camp as
no pre- vious experi-

The Malvern Lacrosse team regained their place at the top of the standings this year after falling short in 2011. The Black Knights cruised through the regular season, culminating in a hard-fought win against East York for the City Championship Gold Medal. Under the leadership of team cap-tain Blair McDonald, the boys travelled to Brampton for the OFSAA provincial champi-onships. Despite stellar performances from Braeden Dale, Andres Kopstals and Eliot Foster, Malvern did not move on to the medal matches. Congratulations to the boys for another winning season and spe-cial thanks to our coaches Brett Kikot, Da-mon Edwards and Aaron Brown.
