Jerry Buchko . . . Thank You!

Eight years ago Jerry Buchko began volunteering for MAMOW as a cook helper but has pro-gressed to helping out wherever he was needed. Jerry has a big heart and enjoys helping people. He joined the Board five years ago, providing expertise on tech-

nology issues and securing much needed grants. For the past year Jerry stepped up to lead the Board as President. Jerry is taking an extended leave for health rea-sons but looks forward to returning as a volunteer. The Thursday kitchen crew will miss his help, con-versations and sense of humor. The Board will miss his leadership.

Thank you for your service, Jerry!

MAMOW SAYS GOODBYE TO HEATHER SHERMAN

Heather Sherman served as Executive Di-rector from June 2015 to August 2016. She has been a wonderful fit for MAMOW with pre-vious experience in administration, knowledge of food safety regulations and volunteering as a MAMOW driver. Her enthusiasm, outgoing personality and organizational skills will be missed by the vol-unteers. Though Heather has chosen to stay at home and help care for her mother, she will continue to be an asset to MAMOW because she be-lieves in the pro-gram and will voice that support in the community. Thank you Heather. You will be missed!

MOW relies on community support of our Fall and Spring Pancake Breakfast Fundraisers to fund our mission. In spite of a surprise snow storm the morning of our April Breakfast, 134 folks braved the weather to enjoy breakfast and a Greek Pastry Bake Sale, raising nearly $1500 for MOW. Welcome New Board Member!

We welcome Liz Didyoung to the MAMOW Board. Liz has served as a MAMOW packer for the past year, noting “I've enjoyed the comradeship with the wonderful MOW volunteers I've interacted with over the year.” Liz comes from a family of supporters of Meals on Wheels; one member worked at another MOW, while yet another took advantage of MOW services. Before retiring, Liz was heavily involved with veterans programs including volunteering at a food bank and establishing a program to prepare veterans for employment by having them serve as interns to learn the corporate world. After test-ing the “volunteer waters,” she has found a home at MAMOW. Liz worked at Fulton Financial Corporation for 35 years in various positions, retiring as Fulton's VP of Employment. Her family includes husband, Frederick, daughter, Susan, and their two rescue dogs, The Noodle and Heidi. Among her goals on the MAMOW Board, Liz

hopes to use her experience in human resources to support the mission of MA-MOW and “spread the word” regarding the valuable service MAMOW pro-vides.

Elsie and Clayton Groff, MOW Drivers We celebrate the long-time ser-vice to MAMOW of Elsie(28 years) and Clayton (22 years) Groff. When Elsie’s children were grown, she wanted to volunteer where she could interact with people. Initially she volun-teered for Lancaster MOW, but switched to Millersville when MAMOW was established. When Clayton retired, he joined Elsie to deliver meals and engage with clients, who look forward to seeing not only their meals, but also the friendly Groffs each day. These folks tell Elsie and Clayton that the meals are good and that they appreciate the service. The Groffs are proud parents of three children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. While the family keeps them busy, they plan to volunteer for MAMOW for many years ahead. They look forward each week to enjoying the kitchen staff as well as their clients. Though their clients may change, new ones come, because MAMOW makes it possible for them to stay in their homes and continue to be independent. MOW is very grateful to Clayton, Elsie and our other wonderful volunteers. Thank-you!

RECIPE CORNER

Mexican Sweet Potato-Veggie Medley Servings: 4 | Difficulty: Easy Ingredients: 1 large or 2 small sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1-11 ounce can Southwestern-style corn with black beans and peppers, rinsed and drained 1/2 cup dairy sour cream 2 Tablespoons chipotle salsa 3 medium avocado, peeled, pitted, and sliced Fresh cilantro leaves and chipotle chili powder (optional) Directions: Place sweet potatoes in a microwave safe dish, cover and cook on 100 percent power (high) for 5 to 8 minutes or just until tender enough to chop. Cool slightly, cut into chunks. Sprinkle lightly with salt. In large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add potatoes, cook until browned and crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Add drained corn to skillet. Cook 3 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Meanwhile, stir together sour cream and chipotle salsa. To serve, divide sweet potato mixture among 4 plates. Top with avocado and serve with chipotle sour cream sauce. Add cilantro and sprinkle lightly with chili powder. Notes: Do not overcook the sweet potato, you want it to stay in chunks throughout the process. For 6 people I used 2 large sweet potatoes. 5 ears fresh corn, nearly 1 can of black beans, 3/4 of a red pepper chopped. (2 avo-cados sliced was plenty).

How Can You Help Meals on Wheels? The nearly 200 volunteers who shop, cook, pack, or deliver allow MAMOW to provide a helping hand to enable people who cannot cook or shop for food to remain in their homes. MAMOW delivers meals throughout the Penn Manor district from 10:30 AM until noon, Monday-Friday, following six routes. Can You Volunteer? Do you have: 3 hours a week to cook in our kitchen? (7:30-10:30 AM) 3 hours a week to pack lunches and dinners? (8:00-11:00 AM) 1.5 hours a week to deliver meals to grateful people? (10:15-11:45 AM) 1 hour a week to shop? (Tues., Thurs., or Fri. morning) 2 hours a month to clean the kitchen? (10:30 AM-12:30 PM) We really need substitutes for each of these positions! Do you have a few hours a month to fill in for one of our regulars? Do you have 2 hours a month to serve on our Board? (2nd Wed. at 7:00 PM) We are especially looking for help with marketing and development. Can you help us promote and support MOW services? If you have a few hours to help MAMOW with any of these jobs, please contact us at 872-2415. Why Should I Donate to MOW? Your donation helps to defray the organizational costs of MOW, which includes equipment repair and replace-ment, rent, linen, liability insurance and salaries. Most importantly, your donation helps us to lower the cost of each meal we deliver and helps clients who cannot afford the costs. On average, we deliver 60 meals/day, 300 meals/week, 1200 meals/month. Each client receives two meals per day – one hot and one cold. A hot meal consists of a main dish, side dish, and vegetable. The cold meal contains juice, a sandwich, fruit, low-fat milk, and a dessert. Cardiac and diabetic meals are available. The Spring newsletter recognizes our many donors, including businesses, churches, and individuals who support MOW with monetary and in-kind donations. MOW and our clients appreciate your support in whatever form you are able to give! Thank you!

MAMOW at Saturday in the Park Once again MAMOW supported Millersville Business Association's Saturday in the Park on May 21. We sponsored Bingo for all ages and games for kids at this free event that featured food, games, prizes and entertainment for the whole community.

Keith Eshleman from John Herr's Market pre-sents a $500 Community Donation check to MAMOW volunteers.

WHO ARE OUR CLIENTS? Anyone in need who is not able to prepare his or her own meals at home is welcome. Millersville Area Meals on Wheels serves families in the Penn Manor School District. We deliver meals to persons who are temporarily or permanently ill or handicapped;; the elderly living alone or homebound;; or those who are convalescing. Our goal is to have our clients receive nourishing meals while maintaining the ability to stay in their homes. A MAMOW client of ten years shared that “MAMOW has helped me tremendously, because I can no longer cook. It also helps me mentally and physically. It's nice to see someone coming to my door.” You, a family member, your doctor, or the hospital may call to set up meal delivery. If you know someone who needs temporary help with meals during recovery from an illness or injury or more long-term support, please contact MAMOW at 872-2415. We need 24 hours to start or stop delivery except for emergencies. Prices are reasonable and help is available from the office of Aging for those who qualify.

BOUNTY FROM THE FIELDS During the summer MAMOW re-ceived wonderful fresh fruit and veg-etables from Garden of Grace at Mil-lersville Community United Method-ist Church and from John Mackley, a food advocate with the Society of St. Andrew (www.endhunger.org). The donated harvest included tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, cantaloupe, peach-es, corn, cucumbers, zucchini and asparagus. Our clients appreciated this delicious bonus!
