EMPORIO ARMANI CERAMICA

For luxury styling without the high end price you can’t go wrong choosing the Emporio Armani Black Ceramica Chronograph watch (AR1400). The black bracelet and dial are highly stylish, the clasp is completely integrated into the bracelet for a smooth finish. The watch is understated and simple with the added practicality of a chronograph.

The Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph Day Date Calibre 16 offers its wearer high functionality and masculine styling. It is the small attention to detail that make the difference on this watch, the red accents in the seconds subdial, red tipped chrono counter, and the red trimmed chronograph start button really elevate the appearance of this timepiece.

The Tag Heuer Carrera Day Date is powered by Tag’s Calibre 16 automatic movement, nicely visible through the display back case. The case is supported by a stainless steel bracelet. This is one of Man About Town’s favourite watches - a true classic.

The major trends at the moment are based on side partings, quiffs and a variation from disconnection through the sides of your head to totally blended in looks.

By day I always think a natural low shine product looks best. By night and depending on how you choose to dress I would look at applying a shine finish to the hair especially when wearing a suit or dinner suit. This I see as being a much smarter, classic look.

I get asked a lot by clients how to achieve these looks themselves. My first question is do you have a good comb? If you don’t then you need one! Then you have to look at what product you are using and how you apply it to the hair. How many times do you see men with product shadows in their hair? You can tell when a man just puts lots of product though the front of their hair and disregards the back and sides. So to combat this I teach clients to start the application of the product in the back of the hair, then the sides and finish with the top. There are two types of product - a base product and a finishing product.

I always recommend using a base product if you want your style to hold for long periods of time.

Towel dry hair after washing - Apply a small amount of light hold gel - Comb your hair into place and leave. As your hair is drying get yourself ready to hit the town. - Once you’re ready to put

the finishing touches to your hair the gel will have hardened, rake your hand through your hair and break up the gel.

Gel has great memory so once you apply your finishing product your hair will sit back in place. The styling product I would use by day is American Crew Forming Cream with American Crew Light Hold Gel By night use American Crew Pomade or if you have thick coarse hair then American Crew Grooming Cream is for you! And remember the gel base it will make a big difference. If that’s not your style and you prefer to wear your hair to show the texture and to defy gravity then dry your hair with American Crew Boost Cream then finish with Boost Powder & Defining paste, Fiber or Clay.

After your big night out, you can remove any product build up by using MOP Basil Mint Clean shampoo.

Have a Great Christmas from Attitude Mens Hair whether timeless, classic or fashionable. Our clients can relax in the knowledge that they are in expert hands, addressing their personal hair and scalp problems and prescribing solutions from our comprehensive range of male specific products. Our colour experts specialise in male colour requirements, and are skilled in reducing the level of visible grey hair, giving a lasting natural-looking appearance.

Dolce & Gabbana The One Gentleman

By using understated notes, this fragrance evokes a contemporary air of simplicity and elegance. The first impression opens with confident notes of grapefruit blended with pepper followed by a sophisticated heart, blending together the soothing accords of lavender and patchouli creating a sublime effect. The second impression gives a hint of masculinity, which comes through in the exquisite, subtle accents of fennel, cedarwood and cardamon.

Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme

A fragrance infused with the force of attraction of a man with sensuality and style. The fresh, woody aroma is effervescent with sparkling notes of vetiver, ginger and bergamot. The contrast of aromas results in a unique combination of art, luxury and modernity for a timeless elegance.

Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme

The new signature aroma for the modern Gucci man, combines cool, contemporary elegance with a classic masculine appeal. The top note and the heart of this fragrance deliver a cool, crisp freshness with a hint of calone and cypress, while violet and bergamot create a masculine, timeless appeal. The character is intensified with incense, leather accord and a subtle, sweet note of tobacco. Warm amber embraces the aroma with depth and longevity, while black pepper adds hints of sparkling effect. The base note is then completed by woody layers of patchouli, amyris and cedarwood.

Being physically prepared for the demands of a ski holiday is very important if you want to stay injury free and ultimately enjoy your snow experience.

Like any sport, the preparation you put in before your ski trip is going to have a huge effect on your fatigue levels and the strength, mobility and stability you have on the slopes.

Although there is no training you can do on land that replicates the function of skiing there is a certain amount we can do to help us prepare our fitness levels, joints, muscles and technique to improve our chances of success.

2 major factors to consider:

Energy Systems – In our training we need to try and replicate the energy systems used in Skiing. Invariably skiing is an interval sport. You ski for a couple of minutes and then you are resting on the chair lift or waiting for your friends. With this in mind our training also needs to be of a similar timeframe.

Biomechanics – depending on your ability level, you will be holding a slight squat position using your feet, hands and eyes as drivers to point you in the right direction and react to the environment. You can use the same drivers to train on land. These drivers and positions are constantly changing and adapting to your direction and the terrain. So we need to vary the positions in our training. It’s no good training on a machine or in the same position such as an Olympic lift or leg press only to go on the slopes, have your knee go in a slightly different direction, not be used to controlling it and get an injury.

Soap stars and city VIP’s were amongst the first people to get a sneak preview of Liverpool’s most exclusive private members club. Playground founder, George Panayiotou said “It has taken 2 years preparing and conducting extensive market research and we are now ready to launch Liverpool’s first members only private venue. Hundreds of guests flocked to Palm Sugar Lounge in Liverpool One to attend the exclusive launch of the ‘Fase of the North West’. In just his mid 20s, George Panayiotou has achieved more than your average entrepreneur. The London boy has become Liverpool’s most recent adopted Scouser and is bringing the city a ground breaking, luxurious late night club in Playground, located below the Hilton Hotel, which his family also owns.

Growing up George was inspired by his Father’s drive and ambition. “I grew up in awe of what my dad was doing (building luxury apartments) and from a young age I was always sitting in meetings with him, listening to how he worked. He kept me well educated throughout my childhood and I’ve grown up with a solid business acumen. At home over dinner, conversation was generally about business, so if you didn’t know anything about it you were pretty much stuck for something to talk about! I found myself at 16 in a position where I could say to my dad ‘look, I just want to start working for you.’”

George then left school following his exams and began working, at the bottom of the food chain, in his father’s ‘buy to let’ business based in Hackney. “My dad would buy underused buildings like old show factories or hospitals and turn them into luxury apartments.” George’s first official job role was lettings negotiator in one of the companies owned by the mother organization, The Ability Group, which his father founded in 1996.

The Panayiotou family have since built up a portfolio reportedly worth more than £750 million. “My role consisted of taking people to see apartments, letting the properties out and dealing with repairs and maintenance issues. From there, my Father was at the point where he had sold out a lot of the company including the residential portfolio at the heart of the market. We were looking at different markets in the property industry and started to get involved in the purchasing of hotels. In just two years, we’ve bought five Hilton’s, a Club Med in Sicily and we’ve recently finished building a Waldorf Astoria hotel in London.”

George’s knowledge of his family’s business is extensive, the way he talks about what they have achieved proves his clear passion and drive, but how has he managed to come so far as a business man in such a small amount of time?

he says. “I always was during my upbringing and I think that’s a massive part of my success. My father always told me ‘it’s not rocket science’. You can spend all the time in the world saying ‘this is what I want to do’ but you have to make a plan and actually do it. It just depends how passionate you are. I was in a lucky position

“ I’m very self disciplined ”

where I had great opportunities, but I have worked hard for what I’ve achieved and I enjoy it so much.”

George says he loves working in the hotel and club business as there’s so much more to think about and consider. “When it came to residential lettings, I’d show the property, let the property and that would be the end of it really. In the hotel and club business there’s so much going on. There are no limits. There’s marketing, PR, design, bars, restaurant - always a new challenge. I’m so hands on in the business, I really look at design, refurbishment and marketing of the hotels.

Playground is George’s latest challenge. The late night club will bring something to Liverpool that we’ve never seen before - and it’s about time. “We bought this hotel two years ago from Grosvenor, and people would often approach us with opportunities to put the empty underground floor to use, café and restaurant operators mostly. I just thought that there’s so much more we could do with the brilliant space. I checked out Liverpool’s night-life and this is such a vibrant city, but coming from London I don’t think the venues match the demand. There are so many great young professionals here who are inspirational; they work hard, want to be successful and wear nice clothes and go to nice places. They go for dinner, but the options from there on are really limited.”

“For me, if I was to describe Playground to you I’d describe it as a bit of a dream, which will bring back the excitement you experienced when you first walked into a toyshop or circus. Make those butterflies in your stomach flutter. It will give the rare opportunity to be young hearted, live the dream and go back to your childhood.

The clubbing excitement dies off and people have started to lose the kick so I want to bring something completely different. For me it’s all about the entertainment. It will be a theatrical experience and I want to shock people. I don’t want people to walk in and say ‘oh what nice chairs’ or ‘they have good lighting’. To me that’s boring, Playground will provide what a Playground should - real fun.”

And fun it sounds, from Ice Cream Cocktails to live shows, midgets and whole burlesque concept which will surprise people. “I like to think I’m a true ambassador of Liverpool, I love the place and I love the people. I’m a well travelled guy and compared to London this is a city where you can sit at any bar and the guy next to you will buy you a drink. London tends to be a bit snobby and everyone thinks they are too good, but Liverpool is friendly and fabulous at the same time. It is a huge family, which I can relate to really well being from a big family myself. When I’m in Liverpool I do a lot of eating, partying and meeting friends. When Playground opens I’m sure there will be a lot of sleepless nights for me and I can’t wait.”

As well as launching Liverpool’s hottest club, George is working with his family to develop a property recently purchased in Bishops Avenue near Hampstead, known as billionaires’ row.

I’ve created a brand and people are talking about it. It’s such an exciting time for me! We’ve had membership enquiries from all over including Glasgow. Even two 16 year olds applied” (the club will be aimed at age 25 and over). It’s rare that George takes time off work, but when he does he likes to go away (when he’s not in the gym). “I like to go on holiday with my friends.

“ I’m very brand driven & always considering what the customer wants ”

“ Playground is my real passion. I’m creating something from nothing ”

Page 31: Man About Town January/February 2011

www.mat-mag.co.uk / 31

We go to Vegas once a year and Miami for Spring Break. When I’m at home there is no time off, but when I go away I can relax and not think about the other customers in the hotel I am staying at. People always say to me; ‘oh it must be great having your own hotels your life must be so much fun.’ What they don’t understand is that it’s work. It’s all the time - I can’t switch off. But when I’m away, I can just relax and let my hair down. The hotels I stay in aren’t my responsibility.” What advice would George give to the young professionals who read Man About Town Magazine? “Follow your dreams - the biggest problem with people now is that they say they want something, but you have to ask the question how much do you really want it? If it’s something you think you’re meant to do you have to get yourself together and make it happen. Also I think that people need to be very good with social skills these days - there are people who are

geniuses walking out of university but they can’t get the jobs they want - there’s a lot you can’t get from book learning and you need to develop yourself personally for the dreams you want to fulfil. You have to get out there and graft. That is what my father did, that’s what he taught me to do and that’s what I’d tell anybody.”

George comes across as very comfortable in himself and is very adamant that anybody can achieve anything. It isn’t difficult to believe as both he and his family have proved. I get the definite impression that George is a family man and is clearly inspired by all they have accomplished- and that’s just the type of person that Liverpool loves. Seeing as he is from a very affluent family, George is very grounded. As he told us, he was taught to work hard, he was taught to be disciplined and he listened to what he was told.

It’s little wonder then, that the 24-year-old has found a new home in Liverpool and picked our city as the best place for his latest adventure. With the down to earth attitude he brings us, it’s also little wonder that he has been accepted into the city whole heartedly. We have no doubt he will be one of the best recognized ‘adopted Scousers’ for years to come.

“ I’m constantly looking out for things to improve, or spotting small details and flaws ”

George Panayiotou, Playground

The all-new Range Rover Evoque, derived from the LRX 2008 Detroit show concept, is the smallest ever Range Rover and is targeted at the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3. Although it is aimed at the latte loving urbanites, the authenticity of the vehicle is essential and with 18,000 on order already, it is proving to be a popular addition to the Range Rover family. Gerry McGovern’s design team has provided us with the most exciting vehicle in a generation, the Evoque portrays sophistication and desirability.

Inside the cabin, the front seats are beautifully upholstered and supportive and with the adjustable steering column, provide the owner with the perfect driving position. Towards the rear, the accommodation in the 5-door manages to seat a couple of six-footers, while the back of the 3-door feels cramped and along with the small windows, could make passengers feel claustrophobic. The boot, though not huge, easily accommodates a couple of medium-sized suitcases.

The Evoque responds like a car, sliding through traffic with its smooth steering and magnetically dampened suspension. At medium to fast speeds it drives firmly and is supple and positive over speed bumps and potholes, giving a comfortable ride to both driver and passengers. However, the rear view can be difficult with its sloped roof.

There are two engines on offer, the 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 148bhp or 187bhp and the 237bhp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit. The petrol option is the smoothest, lightest and most powerful. It is also extremely thirsty, with a Combined consumption of 32.5mpg and 199g/km of CO2 emissions, however, on a fast cross-country run, it manages only 25mpg. The extra weight of the 2.2 diesel makes handling less peppy than the petrol version, but the Combined consumption of 49.6mpg and Band F 149g/km emissions make it an appealing option.

The Evoque is a Range Rover with a different spirit. With its intuitive technology, it is innovative and is possibly the most interesting vehicle to be launched since the original Range Rover 41 years ago. The Evoque is fun and safe to drive and is more rewarding than anything in its class and also on the Land Rover pricelist.

INTERVIEWSTHE SUCCESS TIPS

Job interviews must be up there with moving house and divorce when it comes to increasing stress levels. You are meeting new people, selling yourself and your skills, and often getting a grilling about the things you know – and maybe don’t know! Here are my top interview tips to help you alleviate some of the stress involved in job interviews.

Research Make sure you know as much about the interviewing company as possible, and try and give examples of how your skills can help their objectives be met, and how you fit the job description and role that you are being interviewed for. There is no point banging on about how good you are at organising events if you are being asked to undertake a sales role, for example. NO BS: Be honest and never try to pretend you know something if you don’t. You can always learn about an area of work that you are not sure about, and an employer will recognise that. Equally, we will spot a bulls****er a million miles away – and that is not an attractive trait.

Questions Your ability to ask relevant questions about the job role and the company will go a long way, and often be the deciding factor when two strong candidates have been interviewed. Be a little more innovative than asking about salary, holidays and the Christmas Party!

Thanks They have taken time out of their busy schedule to get to know you. Make sure you thank them for the opportunity as you leave the interview.

None of this is rocket science, but you may be surprised at the number of candidates who fail to follow these simple rules – and then wonder why they didn’t get the vacancy. Happy job hunting!

Be Punctual Make sure that you show up on time, ideally arrive at the interview venue at least fifteen minutes before the start so that you can settle and be ready. If by any chance you are running late due to travel and traffic problems, be sure to phone ahead and apologise.

Turn Your Phone Off I kid you not, I have interviewed several candidates who have not only had their phones switched on in an interview, but actually taken a call. Suffice to say, they didn’t get the job. Turn your mobile OFF.

Take A Drink Even the most confident of people can get nervous at interview, and your throat can quickly start to dry up. Take a drink of water in with you to swerve the embarrassing coughing fit.

Dress To Impress Make sure you are dressed smart and appropriately for the type of firm that you are interviewing with.

Frankie Says Relax A degree of nervousness is expected, but not to the point where you are a quivering wreck. If you think you are about to go into a coma, then take deep breaths, a sip of water and remember that that the interviewer is not trying to trip you up – they want you to do well, because they are desperate to find a good addition to their team.

Private pensions seem to be topical now in that we need to save more, in order to have a good quality of life, when we retire. A good option is to put money into bricks and mortar which you can sell, or use the income it generates, to enhance your pension. With rates so low it is an opportune time to buy and let out, not only will you benefit from the income you will

have the added luxury of capital growth. This may seem improbable in the current market but since the war property prices have doubled every 8 years. By the time you plan to retire the capital growth should have increased expedentially.

At Venmores we can offer advice and guidance to any first time buyers in the buy to let market or even experienced landlords wishing to use an agent. CUBA

LIBREHavana, home of Fidel Castro, revolution, amazing American vintage 50’s cars and most importantly, the birthplace of the Cuba Libre. Legend has it that it was invented in old Havana by an off duty US soldier during the Spanish-American war. A captain ordered a rum and cola on ice with lime. he enjoyed it so much that others in his party decided to join in toasting ‘Por Cuba Libre!’ celebrating Cuba’s newfound freedom. Of course this is hotly debated by some- Coca-Cola didn’t arrive in Cuba until 1900, two years after the end of the war. We say argue the facts over a round of Cuba Libres.

THE ULTIMATE VALENTINES DAY DATE AT THE MARTINI LOUNGE ////

Man About Town has teamed up with The Martini Lounge Burlesque and Variety Show, Hooka and Zeligs to offer one lucky reader the chance to win the ultimate Valentines Date with a cheeky hair cut beforehand to ensure you’re looking good for the big night.

You’ll win a pair of tickets to see the Martini Lounge Burlesque show at Zeligs Liverpool ONE on Friday 17th February with a meal at the amazing restaurant beforehand as well as the chance to visit Hooka to get a brand new haircut from a Director to ensure you’re irresistible to the lucky date you chose to take.

Liverpool’s number one Burlesque show, The Martini Lounge Valentines special will feature saucy and seductive performances from burlesque starlets Mysti Vine, Dinah Might and Tricity Vogue in addition to local favourite and founder of the Martini Lounge Millie Dollar and everyone’s favourite host Fred Bear in a show guaranteed to get you and your suitor in the mood for love. The Martini Lounge treasures the satire and performance art that evolved since its 19th Century origins and has created a classy and delightfully ludicrous night of entertainment in a most beautiful venue to reflect this tradition.

Zeligs is set in a vast New York style warehouse space and serves the most perfect authentic Italian cuisine. If it’s your first time or your tenth visit, they always carry out a thorough consultation to ensure they are giving you exactly what you want. www.hooka-uk.com.
