The IoD ManagementShadowing Programmepresents a rare opportunityto gain frst hand experienceo management in action.

    The Programme

The Programme is designed to give

sixth orm students the chance to

    shadow senior managers in the

    workplace and learn about management

    skills rom rst hand experience.

    Management embraces many tasks

    including sta relations, dealing with

    clients and the public, administration,

    time management and organisational

skills. Its breadth can only be ully

    appreciated when experienced at rst

    hand.

The student will shadow a manager and

establish a one to one relationship.

The students role is one o observation

and watching how the manager works, with the student actively encouraged

to ask questions about the managers

work ethic and views on management.

It is a two way process and eedback is

not only encouraged but is essential or

both students and employers to benet

    rom the experience.

This is not work experience which is

oten limited to non-specialist tasks and

only gives an insight into less complex

areas. Shadowing does not suer rom

this restriction and allows the student toobserve, listen, question and learn rom

individuals operating at a high level o

    responsibility.

The student is the ever present fy

on the wall who may encounter

    condential workplace situations

demonstrating the trust placed in them.

Managers are willing to have their

actions and rationale scrutinised by the

student, creating the unique nature o

    the Programme.

    The Programme has been running

in Guernsey or many years and

has received huge support rom the

    Guernsey Business Community that

is happy to provide access to their

    senior personnel or the Islands

    students to shadow.

The IoD is committed to improving

the understanding o business and its

    contribution to society. Management

    Shadowing provides an opportunity or

the student to learn about business and

management through time spent with a

    senior manager.

This guide is intended to provide

    inormation to students considering

    shadowing, to answer their questions

and those o their parents and to providedetails or businesses who have been

involved in the Programme in the past or

who are considering participating in the

    uture.

We hope it is comprehensive but

    any member o the Management

Shadowing Team is available to discuss

any aspect o the Programme and how

    it may benet you.

    I would denitely recommend

    Management Shadowing to

others. As well as seeing how

a business is run, I learned

    much about how to interact

with others on a day to day

basis and how to best manage

my time. I eel I have grown as

    a person rom participating in

the scheme and having to give

    a presentation was a valuable

experience. I do not have rm

career plans at this stage but

am condent that what I have

    gained rom shadowing will be

o value to me in the uture.

    During the placement the student

should make notes on what he or she

    observes, including management skills

and styles. The student is encouragedto question the manager and his/her

colleagues. Keeping a diary is a good

    way to document the experience

and the notes will assist the student

to critically consider the role o the

    manager.

    Asking questions about the detailed

workings o the business, the job and

the problems is an essential part o

the scheme. All o the employers have

kindly volunteered or the scheme and

expect to answer questions and provideexplanations.

    Prior to the placements students

should use the web, etc to learn about

the business o the employer and

write down some objectives or the

placement. They also need to make

contact with the employer beore the

    placement, to introduce themselves

and ask i there is anything they need

    to know beorehand. Employers should

make their requirements clear to the

students on where the placement willoccur, hours, who to report to, dress

code and any security arrangements. It

is essential that things go as smoothly

    as possible without administration

getting in the way, but ensuring all

essential matters, health and saety and

security are taken care o as shadowing

takes place in a work environment.

    Students typically shadow one

    manager but in larger organisations,

the opportunity may be given to

be with dierent people during theplacement to broaden the range

    o experience.

    The matching o the student

with employer is made by the

    Management Shadowing Team

    based on the inormation provided

by the student in the Application

    Form. Wherever possible the student

will be placed within a business

sector in which they have an interest

    however the Programme ocuses

on management skills many owhich are the same regardless o

    industry sector. The shadowing

experience is o great value even

when a placement is not possible in a

    students selected sector.

In September the student will make a

short presentation o around 4 minutes

    in length, summarising their experience,

describing their views on managementand presenting their overall conclusions.

A judging panel will visit each school

    and assess presentation skills, the

    students understanding o the role

o managers, their analysis o the

    management techniques they saw

being used and what the student elt

they learned rom the experience. The

judging panel will select 10 nalists and

    shortlist 6 o them.

    Presentation Skills training will be

oered to all students beore the

    judging takes place.

In October the 6 shortlisted students

repeat their presentations at an Awards

Evening when the overall winner is

    chosen. All students, employers,

parents, and IoD members are invited

and awards are presented to the

    winning students and all students

    who have successully completed the

    scheme receive a Certicate.

What does theprogramme involve?A range o dates is available or the 3 day placements usually

over February hal term, at Easter, at the end o the summer

term or during the summer holidays with details shown on

    the Application Form.

    Feedback is essential or the

    continuing success o the

    Programme and ensuring that

    it is eective in contributing

    to the development o the

    students. We value hearing

    rom employers, students and

    schools about their experiences

    o the Programme and invite

    comment rom all involved

    with the scheme.

    Students

    The presentations provide an

opportunity to give eedback but it is

    appreciated that personal or critical

    comments may not be appropriate

in a public presentation. Accordinglyconidential eedback can be given

by the students on their placements

which will help us in developing the

    Programme and improving uture

    placements. Feedback on the general

Programme is also helpul e.g. timing,

    organisation, assistance received etc.

    Employers

Comments upon the conduct o the

students are helpul to both the student

    and the schools. Feedback

on the Programme as a whole, its

administration and its value to the

employers will enable us to reine

and improve the scheme. I any

    problems arise during the placement

help is at hand rom the schools

    themselves via the person

    responsible or the Programme and

a quick phone call can oten deal

    with any diiculties. The Management

Shadow Team is also available and

will respond to any problems and

    diiculties with the employers or

    the schools as appropriate.

The aim o the Programme is to

assist in the personal development o

    students and increase their awareness

    o business and management. This

should be a positive experience and

help and advice will be oered to

    make every placement a worthwhile

time or all involved. The IoD and local

businesses are proud to be able to

oer this opportunity to the Islands

students and have been delighted with

the commitment shown by studentsand schools and the high quality o

    presentations in previous years.

We hope many o you will take part.

    Notes on completing the

    Placement Dates

Give as wide a choice o dates as

possible - it helps your chances o

    getting your preerred placement.

    Career Ambitions

Your ocus when shadowing a manager

is to observe and analyse management

    style, methods and their eectiveness

and these are broadly similar across

    most business sectors. This means

that you can learn about management

regardless o the actual business o

your placement company. I you wish,

tell us your career ambitions and we

will try to take this into account when

nding a placement company or you

but please remember that oten this is

    not possible.

    Subjects being studied and

    exams passed

These will help us match you with the

    right employers.

This helps us t you with the

culture o an organisation which is

an important part o ensuring an

    enjoyable placement.

    Health

Any diculties can be taken into

    account and special requirements

    catered or without embarrassment.

    How do you hope the

    Management Shadow Programme

    will beneft you?

    Your thoughts and objectives are

important, they help us make the right

placement and help you to look back

and see what you have achieved.
