The Hanna series of magnetic stirrers aredesigned with simplicity of use for stirringand mixing solutions in a wide range of labo-ratory applications. Several models are avail-able in an extensive range covering:

general purpose stirrers

• dual-speed range

• auto-reverse cycle stirring

• rpm indication

• timer control

All models employ a motorized magnet torotate a stirring bar to create a forced vortexrotational flow in the solution with a constantangular speed which is adjustable with anexternal speed knob.

Unlike conventional stirrers, all Hanna stirrers

use the concept of pulse-driven drive to givethe full power required to effectively stir thefluid regardless of the speed.

This eliminates the need to start the motor athigh speed and the user is now able tocontrol the speed precisely.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

Remove the instrument from the packing ma-terial and examine it to make sure that nodamage has occurred during shipping. If thereis any damage, notify your Dealer.

Each stirrer is supplied complete with a mag-netic stir bar.

Note: Save all packing material until you are

sure that the instrument functions cor-rectly. All defective items must be re-turned in the original packing with thesupplied accessories.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

WARRANTY

All Hanna Instruments products are warranted for two years

against defects in workmanship and materials when used for theirintended purpose and maintained according to the instructions.

Damages due to accidents, misuse, tampering or lack of pre-

scribed maintenance are not covered. This warranty is limited torepair or replacement free of charge. If service is required, contact

the dealer from whom you purchased the instrument. If under

warranty, report the model number, date of purchase, serial

number and the nature of the failure. If the repair is not covered by

the warranty, you will be notified of the charge for repair or

replacement. If the instrument is to be returned to Hanna Instru-ments, obtain a Return Goods Authorization from the Customer

Service Department first and then send it with shipment cost prepaid.

When shipping any instrument, make sure it is properly packaged

for complete protection.

Each stirrer is equipped with an opto-sensorfor speed monitoring, and a speed limitercircuit that prevents hazardous operation whenthe load is suddenly removed.

The power required to effectively stir a fluid isaffected by the torque load on the stirrerwhich is dependent on the capacity, type andviscosity of the fluid. The speed of the stirrerdecreases as the torque load increases andvice versa, unless the power delivered changes

accordingly.For Newtonian fluids like water, the viscosityremains constant during stirring. General pur-pose, normal stirrers are ideal for this kind offluids.

For some fluids like oil and clay, the viscos-ity changes during the stirring process, mak-ing it necessary to adjust the power to main-tain a constant speed during the stirring.Hanna Auto-Speed stirrers (HI 31X series)are designed with automatic feedback controlto maintain constant speed when the torque

load changes and are therefore ideal for stir-ring non-Newtonian fluids where the viscositychanges during stirring.They are also ideal for mixing applicationswhere one solution is added to another whichchanges the capacity and thereby the torqueload on the stirrer.The Auto-Speed stirrers maintain a constantstirring speed during the mixing up to the fullcapacity of 5 liters. They can also be usedwith Newtonian fluids up to a capacity of5 liters.

Recommendations for Users

Before using these products, make sure that they are entirely suitable for theenvironment in which they are used.

Operation of these instruments in residential area could cause unacceptableinterferences to radio and TV equipments, requiring the operator to take all necessarysteps to correct interferences.

Any variation introduced by the user to the supplied equipment may degrade theinstruments' EMC performance.

Unplug the stirrers from the power supply before replacing the fuse.

To avoid damages or burns, do not place these stirrers in microwave ovens.

AUTO-REVERSE STIRRERS

HI 302N normal stirrer and HI 312N autospeedstirrer allow to stir the fluid in both directionsand are ideal for powder mixing applicationsto ensure a homogeneous final product andcomplete dissolution of hard-to-wet powders.The reverse stirring period is adjustable from30 seconds to 3 minutes. When set to

1 minute, the fluid will rotate in one directionfor minute and then reverse its rotation foranother minute at the desired speed in arepeated cycle until the stirrer is switched off.

HI 304N is a heavy-duty stirrer with a built-in

tachometer. An advanced circuit allows to re-
