Managed Lane System Information

Vehicle Eligibility

Managed lanes are travel lanes on roadways that use a combination of vehicle eligibility, access, and pricing tools to manage traffic volumes based on changing conditions.

Vehicles allowed to use managed lanes differ by system. The current HOT system on I-85 has HOT3+ policy, which has the following restrictions and allowable uses:

To control or limit access, managed lanes need to be separated from regular travel lanes, either visually or physically. Physical separation includes installing barriers or elevating the managed lanes. Visual separation includes pavement markings to illustrate that the managed lanes differ from regular travel lanes.

Controlled AccessSystem Types y High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes can only be accessed by vehicles containing a specific number of passengers.

y High-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes can be accessed by high-occupancy vehicles and other exempt vehicles without charge; other vehicles are required to pay a variable fee that is adjusted in response to demand.

y Express toll lanes (ETL) lanes can be accessed by all passenger vehicles, and all vehicles must pay a fee to use.

y Commercial Vehicle lanes (CVL) are only accessible by commercial vehicles (such as trucks carrying freight).

y Mixed Managed Lanes can be accessed by all vehicles including passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles by paying a toll
