This ensures you have the necessary foundation before more advanced study. It also gives you a chance to move courses within the Management Programme, if you decide you want to.

You will be introduced to the key business functions of:

You also learn about International Management, Management Concepts, Business Strategy, Economics, and Business Ethics.

As well as studying the subjects, you develop the intellectual and practical skills you’ll need throughout your degree – and future career as we help and support you to develop your professional competency.

All students return to ABS for semester 2 of year 2, to study subjects including:

> Business Law, where you learn about the legislation and precedent governing business activities

> Business Creation and Growth, where you will explore the challenges and opportunities of starting your own business

> Consumer Behaviour, where you study the decision-making process of consumers and consumer trends to learn how to develop effective marketing strategies

> Business Economics, where you delve deeper into the field of economics as you develop the skills required to understand and analyse key business economic issues in this module

If you plan to take up a placement in year 3, then during this semester our dedicated Placement Office supports you in securing a suitable placement.

For many students, the industrial placement in year 3 is a highlight of their course.

The placement is an exciting and challenging time. It’s an opportunity to consolidate and apply the learning you gained in years 1 and 2, and to acquire real-world business experience that further develops essential professional skills and business acumen.

During your placement you can expect to work in the UK or abroad, and report to a manager who will assess your performance on a regular basis.

You also continue with academic study via:

> A distance-learning module in Health and Safety delivered via our online campus

> A distance-learning module in Research Methods delivered via our online campus

> Completing placement-related reports

As an alternative to the placement, you can choose either to:

> stay at ABS for a third year of academic study, or

> study abroad for a year at one of our Partner Universities in Europe, the USA or Canada on an approved course

Year 4 is the pinnacle of your course.

You study core modules in Business Strategy, Corporate Ethics and Quality Management, and undertake a significant piece of independent research in the form of a thesis. For this, you receive guidance and support from a dedicated thesis supervisor.

You also get to choose from a range of optional modules. These can either extend your knowledge from earlier years, or cover a new and specialised area of business and management such as Project Management, Entrepreneurial Studies, Quality Management, Digital Marketing or Leadership.

Nothing beats real experience. It brings your studies to life, tests your understanding of topics and helps you get an idea of what you might like to do after graduating. Plus it’s a great thing to have on your CV!

If you enter any of the courses within our Management Programme in year 1 or 2, you can undertake a 48-week, paid placement during your third year.

How do I find my placement?

Our Placement Office arranges opportunities with a wide range of employers, who then advertise the position using the University’s internal IT system.

You choose which placement opportunities to apply for, and employers decide who to interview and subsequently employ.

Our placements are very popular, and the competitive nature of securing one mirrors the real world – with the key difference being that our Placement Office will support, coach and advise you every step of the way.

How will I know how I’m doing on placement?

The employer will assess you, and you’ll be supported by an academic member of staff. They make several visits to monitor your progress throughout the year.

Can it help beyond my degree?

Absolutely.

Also, some students are offered the option to return to their placement employer after graduation.

Teaching styles

Each module has weekly lectures and tutorials. Some also involve computer labs, or student-led seminars.

> Lectures: You’ll be in a lecture theatre, listening and note-taking. While there are many students at lectures, they’re often interactive sessions, with an opportunity to contribute and ask questions

> Tutorials: Usually around 16–18 students, who discuss and analyse prepared work. A great chance to ask questions and check you understand difficult areas, as well as take part in lively debate and challenging interactive activities

> Computer Labs: Usually run by a lecturer or tutor, labs may include a business simulation, or working through an IT package that supports learning in that module

> Seminars: Similar to tutorials in number and content, but diff erent in that they’re often student-led. These can include a presentation by students, and discussions run by students with a tutor’s support

How will I be assessed?

We use several methods, including:

> coursework > continuous assessments > examinations > case study work > analysis of empirical research > presentations > taking part in business simulations > group-work

How much work is there?

As a full-time student, you can expect to devote around 35 hours a week to study.

Of this, around 12–14 hours are in the classroom as part of lectures, tutorial or computer lab sessions.

The remaining hours are for private or group study, class preparation, research and writing up notes.

Induction week

The week before your course begins, you will attend a Course Induction Session. This gives you information essential to your course, and is a chance to meet members of staff and mix with students from your course. You’ll also hear presentations from past and current students about their experiences, and have an opportunity to chat with them.

During the fi rst week of your course, you will attend introductory lectures for each module in your fi rst semester. This provides you with an overview of the subject area, and explains the structure, content, delivery and assessment of the module. You also receive further course information during this week. Tutorials begin in week 2.

Enterprise skills are critical in every 21st century career; they not only boost your employability, but can also be the key to survival when self-employed. Which is why, at RGU, we now off er all our students real-life experience and tuition in entrepreneurial skills.

The Enterprise Programme introduces all students to enterprise skills through a series of lectures, workshops and master-classes. In addition, it provides access to many other exciting activities including a unique business incubator designed to help students transform embryonic ideas into fully fl edged business opportunities.

Alternative qualifications

Equivalent overseas qualifi cations and some access programmes will be considered. You may be able to enter year 2 or 3 with a relevant HNC or HND qualifi cation.

Degree link programme

Entry to year 2 of specified courses within the BA (Hons) Management Programme may be possible if you’ve completed an appropriate HNC at one of our partner FE Colleges.

Similarly, entry to year 3 of specified courses within the BA (Hons) Management Programme may be possible if you’ve completed an appropriate HND at one of our partner FE Colleges.

Study options

Full-time: 3 years – ordinary degree4 years – honours degree

Placement

You can undertake an optional 12 month paid work placement in year 3. International placements are available in all Management courses.

Study Abroad

In year 2 or 3, you can take the chance to study with partner institutions in Europe, the USA or Canada as part of the Erasmus Programme. You’ll be taught and assessed in English, and will also receive foreign language tuition where applicable.

Study abroad is a compulsory part of BA (Hons) International Business Management.
