Choosing a course isn’t straightforward. There’s loads of detail you need to know: where will I study? what topics get covered? how do I get assessed? Plus you also want to gain a ‘feel’ for things – ideally, directly and honestly from some current or recent students. In this brochure we’ve combined both of these: hard facts with real views. And we’ve tried to keep things short and clear, so you don’t get put off by more information than you need.

Our aim is to give you a quick, genuine and useful insight into our courses. If there’s anything more you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

“The modules are not only really interesting and useful; I can also see their relevance to daily life – which is very motivating!”

Fiona JarvieBA (Hons) MAnAgeMent

… had tried another university before coming to RGU. “Here the staff are approachable and helpful. This makes a huge difference to the learning experience. Even on my first day I felt I could ask for help or information – quite a contrast to the stuffy ‘us and them’ attitude of many other universities! The campus is wonderful and modern with excellent facilities, and I’ve already got so much out of a short space of time here.”

PLACEMENTS:BROADEN yOUR EXPERiENCE…

“The opportunities really set ABS apart from its competitors. They’ve helped improve my CV and developed me professionally. It’s easy to see why ABS has some of the best graduate employment rates in UK.”

Glenn BuchanBA (Hons) MAnAgeMent

… has just completed his third year placement – “a really positive and exciting experience.” He sees opportunities throughout the course. “During my fi rst two years I was a student representative, reached the IBM Business Challenge semi fi nals, worked as an Intern for the Scottish Institute for Enterprise and secured summer placements thanks to continuing University support. I even started my own marketing company: the modules gave me the knowledge and inspiration, and staff helped turn it into a profi table business. I don’t think I could have achieved the same elsewhere, and I thoroughly recommend RGU to anyone.”

PROSPECTS:CREATE A wiNNiNG COMBiNATiON

this course combines study in two vital business areas: management and economics.

Economics equips you with the skills and knowledge to explain the workings of both business and the economy as a whole. Economics explores the decision making behaviour of companies and consumers and how this relates to supply and demand in markets, and further analyses such issues as economic growth, inflation, unemployment, budget deficits or trade. This course enables students to understand the practical business application of economic theory and how economics can influence such areas as business strategy.

Career options

As a result, you’ll understand the economic environment companies and governments operate in.

That’s a gateway to a range of careers, in both the private and public sectors.

You could become a professional economist in business or government, or pursue a career in trading, retail or corporate banking, insurance or consultancy.

Potential roles

> Investment Analysts research investments across global markets, providing ideas and information to fund managers

> Quantitative Analysts work in the banking industry, developing models to manage stocks and bonds so problems and issues with market prices can be avoided

“My experience as a Student Director with The Stewart Milne Group during my honours year has allowed me to talk confidently at interviews, as I was able to combine practical experience with theoretical knowledge to provide a more credible answer.”

Rachael Douglas

who graduated July 2009 in BA (Hons) Management and is now a graduate trainee within the financial sector… also spent four months as an exchange student in Italy. “The best experience of my life! Living, studying and partying with students from 25 countries taught me so much about myself and other cultures. It highlighted the importance of being able to communicate and work at a global level, and gave me a strong desire to work for an international company. The experience is also very beneficial to discuss at interviews, as it‘s viewed very positively by employers.”

This course has fewer accounting modules than BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance – ideal if you have a strong interest in finance, but don’t necessarily want to be an accountant, and would rather work in business management.

Nothing beats real experience. It makes your studies seem real. Tests your understanding of topics. And helps you get an idea of what you might like to do after graduating.

(Plus it’s a great thing to have on your CV.)

If you enter any of our Management courses in year 1 or 2, you can undertake a 48-week, paid placement during your third year.

How do I find my placement?

Our Placement Office arranges opportunities with a wide range of employers, who then advertise the position using the University’s internal IT system.

You choose which to apply for, and employers decide who to interview and subsequently employ.

Our placements are very popular, and the competitive nature of securing one mirrors the real world – with the key difference that our Placement Office will support, coach and advise you every step of the way.

How will I know how I’m doing on placement?

The employer will assess you, and you’ll be supported by an academic member of staff. They make several visits to monitor your progress during the year.

Can it help beyond my degree?

Absolutely.

Also, at the end of their placement, some students are offered the option to return to the firm after graduation.
