Itisafactthatworkonacceleratorsanddetectors hasgenerated“useful”fallout,affectingeverydaylife.Thishasbeendocumented, anditdoesoffsetthehighcosttosocietyofthelargeinstallations.

Thishasmainlyhappenedthroughthepurchaseinindustryofequipmentbasedonnewconceptsordevelopments thathadbeenmodelled (andoftenprototyped)atCERNandthetransferofknowhowcamefromhelpingthecompanytofulfil thespecification. Manycompanies haveendorsedthisapproach.

Patentingwasnotpartofthemenu.

Fundingagencies nowexpectresearchorganizationstotakeoutpatents(unfortunately) .Thereturnsfromroyaltiesbarelycoverthecostofmaintaining atechnologytransfergroup, andthefilingofpatentsandthesecrecysurroundingthemusestimeandresources, anddetractsfromtheteambehaviour uponwhichsuccess depends.

CERNhasnotescaped thismovement.
