A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER TO INFORM AND ENTERTAIN OUR CUSTOMERS Managing Pain In The Neck And Shoulders With more people living sedentary lifestyles or working in a seated position, especially when typing on a keyboard, neck and shoulder pain and stiffness is become more of an ongoing issue for chiropractors. In some case, neck pain and stiffness that radiates to the shoulders can also be a sign of problems with the spine, often due to degenerative disease, trauma or injury to the neck. When the pain is in the shoulders but not in the neck there could be issues with pinched nerves, frozen shoulder, and strains or issues with lifting or moving heavy items leading to pain and discomfort. Other factors that can contribute to pain in the neck and shoulders can include poor posture, chairs incorrectly positioned and also not using ergonomically designed computer and office equipment. To assess neck and shoulder pain see your chiropractor. He or she will complete a variety of tests to determine the cause of the pain. If it is due to poor posture, remaining in the same position, or other factors outside of medical health issues the following may be helpful. Stretch – regularly getting up and moving around will help relieve muscle strain from holding your head and shoulders in one position. You can also stretch in your chair by pushing your arm and shoulder down to the side while gently tilting your head over the opposite shoulder. Repeat on the other side and feel the gentle stretch. Get walking – take a five-minute brisk walk on your breaks or get up and move around at least once an hour. Walk in a relaxed motion and swing your arms freely. Keep a pair of tennis shoes handy and get some time outdoors if you can. Neck stretches – you can do several exercises or stretches at your desk when you feel muscle tension in the shoulders or neck. For the neck, slowly and in a controlled fashion allow your head to tilt back, bringing your chin towards the ceiling. Make sure the motion is slow and controlled. Open your shoulders – bring your arms up to chest height and bend at the elbows. Pull the shoulders back, without moving the arms back, imagining your shoulder blades trying to touch. Always talk to your chiropractor about any exercises, particularly if you have a back or neck injury. Do all the exercises slowly and in a controlled fashion, stopping when you feel the maximum comfortable stretch. Hello! We are pleased to send you this monthly issue of Healthy Body Healthy Living. Managing Pain In The Neck And Shoulders With more people living sedentary lifestyles or working in a seated position, especially when typing on a keyboard, neck and shoulder pain and stiffness is become more of an ongoing issue for chiropractors.

• Stretch – regularly getting up and moving around will help relieve muscle strain from holding your head and shoulders in one position. You can also stretch in your chair by pushing your arm and shoulder down to the side while gently tilting your head over the opposite shoulder. Repeat on the other side and feel the gentle stretch.

• Get walking – take a five-minute brisk walk on your breaks or get up and move around at least once an hour. Walk in a relaxed motion and swing your arms freely. Keep a pair of tennis shoes handy and get some time outdoors if you can.

• Neck stretches – you can do several exercises or stretches at your desk when you feel muscle tension in the shoulders or neck. For the neck, slowly and in a controlled fashion allow your head to tilt back, bringing your chin towards the ceiling. Make sure the motion is slow and controlled.

• Open your shoulders – bring your arms up to chest height and bend at the elbows.

Thyroid Health Tips The thyroid is a small gland that has large responsibilities, but thyroid health often suffers because of food that is lacking in nutrients and our stress-filled lifestyles. The result can often be long-term thyroid disorders resulting in the production of either too much or too few hormones and causing everything from exhaustion and depression to constipation and even hair loss. One of the best things to maintain thyroid health is selenium, which is most commonly found in meat and poultry products as well as fish, seafood, and cereals. Selenium is vital to maintain optimum thyroid and immune system metabolism and for antioxidant protection. Selenium supplements are also available. Iodine is another nutrient that is essential for the proper production of thyroid hormones to help with normal development and growth, particularly for the brain. Sea vegetables, cranberries, navy beans, strawberries, Himalayan salt, and potatoes should be added to your everyday diet to ensure you consume an adequate amount of iodine. Drinking lots of water also assists with the more efficient function of your metabolism and can help to fight constipation, improve digestion, and reduce bloating.

Nutrition Tips For a Healthy Brain The brain is like every other part of your body – needing proper exercise and nutrients in order to continue functioning at the optimum level. Junk food has just as adverse an effect on cognitive function and brain power as it does on other areas of our bodies. Around twenty to thirty percent of all the calories we consume are made use of by the brain, meaning it is a very good idea to feed it with the highest quality nutrients. Physical and mental health can both be improved by a diet that consists of foods that are nutrient dense such as leafy greens like spinach and kale, as well as other forms of cruciferous vegetables. These vegetables help to battle disease by boosting the immune system, while deep water fish like salmon feature anti-inflammatory properties and essential omega-3 fatty acids that are vital for proper brain function. Caffeine is also good for the brain, studies have shown, improving mood, memory, general cognitive function, reaction time, and vigilance.
