    Introduction

The world o work is changing and, like all change, it comes with the potential

or both danger and opportunity. Although there are many skills required or

working well virtually (organizational, technological, etc.), this book ocuses

on how to maximize your relationship with the individual who is the most

critical (other than you) to your successyour virtual boss. I you work in an

organization with a matrix management structure (as many o us do), these

skills become even more critical as you manage your work with leaders, teammembers, and peers in both project and technical roles.

Principle: Although the title o this book may appear manipulative, my belie

is that the most satisying relationships both at work, and in lie, are based

on a win/win philosophy. The best way or you to succeed is to understand

others needs and motivations and to strive or solutions and actions that

    meet them.

Fewer layers o management, a larger span o control, and the virtual

workplace make your bosss job more challenging. When your of ce

moves into virtual space, many o the lessons learned rom the ace-to-ace

experiences o leading, partnering, and teamwork are no longer eective.

Even i your boss attends great leadership training, most o the leadership

techniques taught to managers are designed or management by walking

around, not management via email. Your boss needs to eel inormed, valued,

and sae rom the surprises that happen when he or she cannot see you

working. This section provides clear guidance on how to ensure your boss

is always your advocate when responding to inquiries rom his or her boss,

clients, peers, or the human resources department.
