Recap – It Was Another Busy Season!

By Janice Nearing, Director of Public RelationsGet Your Free Public Awareness Materials

By Wayne Hartley, Manatee Specialist Blue Spring Adoption Update

The season began on November 15th and ended on March 24th. The season calf count was at 50. The last calf was brought in by Lemon on January 9th and was only a day or two old. The new-born immediately became known as Lime! After a thorough check of the data, the number of manatees seen during the

season stands at 507. This is about a 20 manatee increase over the past few seasons. Our high count for a single roll call was down by about 50 to 407. The warm winter let the manatees move all season and boosted the numbers seen. The first of the adoptees to depart us was Margarito on January 31st.

Then as February went along, more adoptees left—Deep Dent and Rocket on the 6th, Floyd on the 11th, and Lenny on the 19th. Aqua, Howie, Philip, Phyllis, and Whiskers stopped coming in on March 17th. Brutus showed his independence by going alone on March 18th. The next day Doc,

lorida is called the boating capital of the world, and with these hot and sun-filled days

upon us, the summer boating season is in full swing. Save the Manatee Club (Club) cautions the boating community to use vigilance to avoid injuring manatees and other marine life, as the busy waterways provide important habitat for many species. Manatees are constantly on the move, foraging and mating, and boaters are urged to be on the look-out for these slow-moving gentle mammals. The Club produces and distributes a variety of free public awareness materials. Yellow “caution” waterproof banners with the message, “Please Slow, Manatees Below,” are available to Florida boating enthusiasts. The banners alert other boaters to the presence of manatees in the area and can be very helpful in protecting manatees from potential harm. Also available are dock signs for Florida shoreline property owners, boat decals, and waterproof manatee protection tips cards. Download the free Manatee Alert app for iPhones and iPads at bit.ly/ManateeApp. The app helps users be better informed to protect manatees and contribute to preserving our environment. You can get the free public awareness materials by e-mailing the Club at [email protected] or by calling toll free at 1-800-432-JOIN (5646).

Help Manatees for Tomorrow

The Girls Are Enjoying the Spring Run Again

By Katie Tripp, Ph.D., Director of Science & ConservationNeeds for International Support Grow

ll of the items from our holiday wish list have successfully arrived at Wildtracks in Belize and are helping the manatees in rehabilitation there. We were also able to work with a wetsuit manufacturer in California to produce a special suit

to assist manatees in Belize to maintain their buoyancy while they are recovering from lung cavity injuries caused by watercraft strikes. Our collaborator in Nigeria continues to expand his work to more villages, where with the support of Save the Manatee Club (SMC), the villagers are provided an economically viable alternative to killing manatees for food and an incentive to protect them instead. Next year, he hopes to bring representatives from the villages together at a conservation summit. Once again we provided Spanish educational materials to collaborators in Cuba working to educate fishermen about manatees and contributions they can make to manatee conservation. We are also providing funding assistance to enable tracking efforts for a female Amazonian manatee released in Brazil. In addition, we are exploring opportunities to assist colleagues in Honduras through the development of a conservation plan to protect manatees and their habitat. As a first step, we connected those working in Honduras with a researcher who specializes in finding manatees to identify which areas are most in need of protection! Antillean manatees were included in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's reclassification decision, despite strong opposition from scientists, including those of us here at SMC. Regardless of the Service's flawed decision-making, we remain committed to helping manatees in all of the countries where they occur. Can we count on your continued support? Go to savethemanatee.org/donation and direct your gift to our International Rescue Fund.

By Katie Batten Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park Update

Our area experienced a warmer winter than usual, however many manatees still sought the refuge of our warm-water spring on colder days. Manatee Patrol volunteers kept a close eye on the waters bordering the park, reporting sightings of tagged manatees and recording daily manatee counts.

Manatee season concluded on March 31st, the time when the seasonal sanctuary boundaries are removed from the river and the gates to our spring are closed and secured. While this excludes wild manatees from entering the main spring, our three resident manatees, Ariel, Electra, and Lorelei, are

thrilled to again have access to the spring run for summer. The girls are back! Even with a warmer winter, unpredictable weather can be challenging for manatees. On President’s Day, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Fish

Vector Makes Appearances! There were no sightings of East Coast adoptees Chessie and Ilya over the winter months or of Tampa Bay adoptees Ginger, Jemp, Elsie, and Flicker. However, adoptee Vector was seen on January 31st and February 1st at the TECO Apollo Beach power plant and then again on March 8th at the Bayside Power Station in Tampa Bay. Since the waters around Tampa Bay are not as clear as the spring-fed waters at Blue Spring or in Homosassa, it is much harder to spot the adoptees

in that area. Also, the waters tend to be choppier, making it harder to recognize scar patterns, which researchers use to identify individual manatees. This past winter wasn’t as cold as some previous winters, which allowed manatees to spend more time away from their winter gathering sites foraging rather than resting at the warm-water discharges. A cold spell in mid-March brought a larger number of manatees to the warm-water

outflows of power plants again, and large aggregations could be enjoyed by visitors watching for manatees from the boardwalk at the TECO power plant in Apollo Beach. During warm winters, such as this last one, we encourage boaters to be extra careful when out on the water and to be on the lookout for manatees, just as we do for the rest of the year when manatees are dispersed throughout their non-winter habitat.

Manatee Sightings Are Keeping Us Busy

Recap – It Was Another Busy Season!

By Dr. Ruth Carmichael and Elizabeth Hieb Alabama Adoption Update

pring has arrived in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and warmer water temperatures

mean manatee migration season is underway! Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Manatee Sighting Network (DISL/MSN) has already received our first sightings of the season, including confirmed reports of a large female known to frequently visit the northern Gulf of Mexico coast from wintering grounds in peninsular Florida. The mild winter temperatures also meant that DISL/MSN did not have much of a winter

break this year, with sightings every month during January through March. Two manatees were sighted in Louisiana and Mississippi during late February and late March, respectively, suggesting the possibility that some manatees may have overwintered in the northern Gulf this year. As spring turns to summer, we are sure to see more manatees in local waters and hope that Save the Manatee Club adoptee Bama will make an appearance! Bama was last seen in Dog River in Alabama, a hotspot for manatee

activity during July 2016. In addition to monitoring local manatee movements, the DISL/MSN team has been busy hosting outreach booths and educational presentations aimed at increasing awareness for manatees in northern Gulf of Mexico waters. We rely on citizen-reported sightings to learn more about manatees that seasonally reside in Alabama, Mississippi, and states further west. We hope that increased awareness will aid our research efforts and promote safe sharing of our local waterways by manatees and people.

Lenny, and Lucille took their turn. Annie, Lily, Nick, and Paddy Doyle followed on March 20th. Gator was the last to go on March 21st. Rocket was late getting to the spring, so he will not count as "spending the winter." Also in that category are Flash and Merlin. Flash came and went on November 23rd, while Merlin’s day was New Years. Not unexpectedly, Elaine and Squeaky did not show at all. But it was a surprise that we never saw or received word of Robin. We captured two manatees this season. Una was taken to Sea World, where her flipper entanglements were cleaned up, but she seems to have other problems. Lola’s lung was drained at Miami Sea Aquarium, and she seemed to be doing well, but sadly, one morning she died suddenly of her condition. Lola was Lucille’s first calf. She had eleven calves and nine grand-calves. A surprise cold front came through in early April. We counted 10 manatees on the 9th and 2 on the 10th and thought that was that, but more came in on the 11th than the 9th! Three cow-calf pairs from earlier were in and one new one during the passing cold. I am considering this April happening a special event rather than a continuation of the season.

Annie and her calf (born in August of last year), made frequent visits to Blue Spring this past winter season. Photo by Cora Berchem, Save the Manatee Club.

protections under the Endangered Species Act. PLF and the Service claim that protections will remain the same for manatees under a threatened listing. Yet if that were the case, why would PLF and Save Crystal River expend their resources on this downlisting effort? PLF knows full well that the majority of substantive manatee protections, including essential slow speed protection zones, are set at the state level. Removing the endangered listing reduces incentives for conservation and risks giving the erroneous perception that threats to manatees are under control and no further protections are needed. Indeed, much of the media is celebrating downlisting as a success story, already risking to lose public awareness of these potentially harmful changes. The fact is that downlisting manatees at this time is not supported by law or science. In order for manatees to be reclassified, threats to its survival must be controlled or decreasing, and regulations must be in place to protect the species. In addition to record watercraft mortality and deaths from harmful algal blooms, manatees face increasing threats from cold stress as artificial warm-water sources are taken offline simultaneously with declines in natural spring flows from development and overpumping of groundwater. The scientists who offered peer review comments on the proposed downlisting rule recommended against downlisting at this time on the basis of these threats.

The Girls Are Enjoying The Spring Run Again continued from page 3

and Wildlife Service rescued a juvenile male manatee from Crystal River, Florida, that exhibited signs of cold stress. This is a potentially fatal health condition that may happen if a manatee is exposed to very cold water. The manatee was brought to our park for rehabilitation, utilizing our newly resurfaced in-ground heated treatment pool. After a physical health assessment and continuous care from our rangers and veterinarian, the manatee named Roosevelt, in honor of President’s Day, began improving. Rangers have closely monitored his positive progress and when approval is received, Roosevelt will be released back into the wild. Every week, volunteers scrub and remove the algae from the girls, and of the three, Ariel enjoys her “spa day” the most. Along with feeling good, these scrubbing days allow for an up-close inspection of each manatee to monitor any changes in body or behavior. Electra was observed having little interest in her meals, leaving hay and lettuce at each feeding. With a few visits from veterinarian Dr. Ray Ball and continuous supportive care from rangers, Electra recovered fully and is back to normal. Lorelei is enamored with Roosevelt and is often observed staring at him through the fencing. Lorelei greatly enjoys food and has been seen gladly eating lettuce that Roosevelt sneaks to her through his fencing. Come by our park and visit with Ariel, Electra, Lorelei, and Roosevelt during one of our daily manatee programs!
