Halla Way_Work Properly
This column was created as part of practicing “Halla Way, Work Properly,” for global Mando people to share the seven major Work Smart tasks and practice cases.
MDK (Mando Korea) has continuously carried out open communication activities since 2015 to create a Work Smart culture. The Open Committees
(OC), are at the center of such activities as a group of opinion leaders.
In early March, the OCs gathered at MDK for the 2018 Open Committee Workshop to discuss ideas to promote Work Smart in each division. Here is
a look into how they drive change and create a Work Smart culture at the OC workshop.

Open Committee Workshop, a Focal Point Where Changes BeginThe 2018 Open Committee Workshop to create a Work
Smart culture for each division was held from March 7 to 9 at
the Halla Human Resources Development Center, and 165
OC members from a total of 32 divisions participated.
The workshop, which was held in three parts, started with
welcoming remarks from Shim Sang-yoon, the head of the
Global HR Center. Shim congratulated the participants for
being selected as OCs and asked them to “make a concert-
ed effort to build a better company where workers can work
more effectively, with a positive mindset and pride as the
supportive agent of change management.”
The workshop schedule included introducing Open Commu-
nication activities, listening to a special lecture on change
management by an external lecturer, showing the results of
a Work Smart survey, sharing best practice examples, and
holding small group discussions. The special lecture held in
the morning reaffirmed the importance of change manage-
ment with examples from other companies, and the roles
and responsibilities of the people in charge of change man-
agement were contemplated.
In the afternoon, the results of a company-wide Work Smart
survey that was carried out in February were shared, and the
best examples among the Work Smart practices submitted
by each team in January were introduced to the OCs to be
used as the basis to come up with improvement suggestions
for each division.
Town Hall Meeting with Division Head, a Driving Engine of ChangeAlso, the OC members conducted small group discussions
in the workshop to come up with ideas for forming a Work
Smart culture in connection with key themes, “Seven Work
Smart Tasks.” Ideas for improvement which were produced
here are shared throughout each division at the Town Hall
Meeting hosted by each division head, through which a final
decision is made collectively on improvement plans to be
implemented with all members participating in open commu-
nication.

7 Major Work Smart Tasks
HMI, Communication between Humans and AutomobilesAlthough great many functions have been added to automo-
biles due to the technological advancement, operating them
has become more complex. However, upgraded future auto-
mobiles will resolve this complexity, and in turn will make it
easier for drivers to operate them.
Human-machine interface (HMI), which organically connects
humans and automobiles, helps to operate vehicles more in-
tuitively and conveniently. HMI acts to connect human ana-
logical cognitive processes such as sight and hearing with
the digital systems of computers and communication sys-
tems. HMI minimizes sight dispersion and makes operating
automobiles easy with voice recognition, which operates
by voice instead of switches or levers, motion recognition,
which gives orders with motions, touch technology, etc.,
thereby creating an environment where drivers can concen-
trate on driving.
nVIDIA, a leader in artificial intelligence technology, is re-
searching ways to realize cutting-edge HMI using artificial in-
telligence, such as opening doors with face recognition, user
management with motion recognition, voice control by un-
derstanding natural language, and driver attention warnings
with eye-tracking technology. Volkswagen has announced
that it is planning on using such technologies in developing
next-generation intelligent automobiles.

As more and more individual industries and technologies converge, the speed at which future automotive technology grows is also accelerating.
Technologies once thought to belong to different fields are now organically converged to lead to a new level of evolution. Now, electronic and com-
munication technologies have become key elements that are inseparable from the automotive industry, and their importance keeps on increasing.
We examine the future of smart mobility with keywords from the electronic and communication fields, which were at the center of attention at the
Consumer Electronic Show (CES) held earlier this year, and the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the world’s largest mobile exhibition, as well as the
PyeongChang Olympics.

Deep Learning, Automobile that Learns How to Drive “When people drive, automobiles learn how to drive by them-
selves,” George Hotz, the founder of Comma.ai, said while
introducing an autonomous driving automobile based on
deep learning. This means that if someone drives an auto-
mobile with artificial intelligence based on deep learning, it
learns how that person drives and develops into an automo-
bile that can drive by itself.
When Google announced autonomous driving for the first
time in 2012, a car body cost about $150,000. However, a
great reduction in cost and time has been achieved as deep
learning technology is applied in this field.
At present, the technology related to autonomous driving
uses information collected with cameras and many different
types of sensors, such as radar, lidar, infrared sensors, and
ultrasound. While previous sensors simply recognized ob-
jects, artificial intelligence understands the meaning of the
objects recognized. A new venture company called AutoX
realizes autonomous driving using only cameras.
The surrounding environment input via six cameras is rec-
ognized as if by a person and controls the automobile. Also,
it gathers various driving data while driving and learns like a
human.
Automobile manufacturers have already started competing.
A fierce competition is expected to unfold since future mar-
ket leaders will be determined by how much deep learning
capacity is obtained.
5G, Connecting Automobiles and Networks Korea, an ICT powerhouse, proudly presented 5G, the
next-generation wireless communications technology, at Py-
eongChang Winter Olympics in February. The future auto-
mobile market is also paying attention to 5G.
Google announced that autonomous driving automobiles
will be common by 2020, like general automobiles are today.
Why 2020? That is because 5G wireless communications
technology will be commercialized in 2020. 5G technology
is considered to be an absolute requirement to realizing IT
technologies, such as autonomous driving automobiles, ar-
tificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and virtual
reality.
5G has better transmission speed, delay time, and termi-
nal accommodation capacity than the commonly used 4G
LTE: the transmission data capacity is 1,000 times larger
and speed is 200 times faster. Also, since the delay time
generated in the data transmitting and receiving process is
short, service with no delays is possible. 5G technology will
connect automobiles, automobiles and infrastructure, auto-
mobiles and networks, and automobiles and pedestrians in
real time.
It is expected that more than two-thirds of the automobiles
worldwide will have a wireless connectivity function by 2022.
To prepare for this, the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA)
was established in September 2016.
Automobile manufacturers, such as BMW, Nissan and Ford,
IT companies, such as Samsung Electronics and LG Elec-
tronics, automotive parts manufacturing companies, and
wireless communications companies have joined the asso-
ciation in preparation for the 5G era. Also, professional re-
searchers in each field formed a group to develop 5G-based
vehicle solutions, innovate and design vehicle system struc-
tures and establish business and commercialization strate-
gies together.

Quality is Our Pride My quality control career started 13 years ago in a Toyota
engine manufacturing plant, where I gained my basic knowl-
edge about quality management in the entire manufacturing process.
This experience was of a great help for me in smoothly adapting to
the Mando environment, as well as in developing the quality control
department at MCP with new local staff and Korean superiors. Among
others, I would like to thank Kim Youn-ho (Simon), who showed con-
tinuous support through mentoring and experience-sharing. I am also
grateful to Kim Jang-sub (Joseph), who has served the same role as
Senior Manager,
Quality Control Dept. MCP
Hello, I am Marcin Sopiarz, a senior manager working in MCP (Mando Cor-
poration Poland). I joined Mando during the summer of 2012, at which the
initial operation of the plant started. Upon joining, I was tasked with installing
measuring devices in our laboratories and conducting the first inspection. At
that time, plant construction had yet been completed, so I have a vivid mem-
ory of working with a safety helmet on due to ongoing construction work. We
prepared everything with our own hands, from making our brand to launching
a new quality control (QC) team.

my mentor.
My major responsibility is to manage the QC team, currently
made up of 53 members. Our main job is mass production
quality control, which ranges from warehousing inspection to
in-line inspection, verification, and reliability test and to cus-
tomer service. We are also in charge of maintaining control
devices and managing the IATF 16949 system.
Because MCP is producing three different types of products
(suspension, brake caliper and steering), QC’s responsibil-
ities are tripled. The staff in charge of QC needs to have
a high level and wide range of knowledge about all of the
products, and an open mind. In other words, they need to be
universal experts.
MCP is recognized by its customers for its quality. MCP has
received a very good evaluation in numerous on-site as-
sessment visits, and has also been highly acknowledged in
terms of shop floor management and 5S. MCP’s outstanding
quality has been demonstrated with its market position as a
Top 3 quality supplier, as well as with evaluation results from
the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM).
We need to remember that QC starts from following basic
standards and systems. The efforts of the shop floor staff in
production, maintenance, logistics, etc. are the most import-
ant elements of QC. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all the members of MCP who have created the qual-
ity level of the current MCP by working with an open mind.
Quality is YOU!
Pojana, Tying the Family into OneAs for all of us, in my life, my closest family takes top priority.
I have a wonderful wife, Magdalena. Together we are doing
our best to lead our two children, our 14-year-old daughter
Zuzanna and 9-year-old son Emil, through life’s joys and dif-
ficulties. My wife is a primary school teacher, so she takes
a professional approach to
educating our children. We
support our kids to develop
their passions and talents
to full-bloom. Zuzanna is
attending a music school,
and her passion is singing
and playing the piano and
violin. We might see her on
TV someday. She has already been playing in several con-
certs held in the neighborhood. Emil, who is expected to be a
rising national soccer player, is attending a soccer academy.
He is also very good in logic games. He is always in the top
3 in his age category in local competitions. I’m a really happy
husband and father. I am really proud of my whole family.
Our whole family, which is quite big, has a tradition centered
on a folk band called Pojana and likes to spend a lot of time
together singing and dancing. The band was founded by my
wife’s great-grandfather, and the family tradition has contin-
ued for 60 years. The beginning of the band reflects the great
longings of Poles who once lived in Bukovina and returned to
their homeland after 200 years of exile. Now, the band is the
biggest and the oldest band in the country, representing the
culture of highlanders in the country.
Pojana participates in an international folk festival called
“Bukovina Meetings,” which takes place in five Eastern Eu-
ropean countries every year: Poland, Romania, Slovakia,
Hungary and Ukraine. It’s a magical time of integrating all
the Bukovina highlanders who are living in other countries, a
time occupied by singing, dancing and transferring traditions
to the next generation.
My goal for this year is to stabilize the quality for the new
premium customers of MCP (Volvo and BMW). I strongly be-
lieve that working with passion towards goals and not giving
up despite difficulties will do bear fruition. Nothing is impos-
sible!

A Festival of Colors where Everybody is Equal India’s Holi Festival
Every March, India is dyed with bright colors because of the Holi festival, which is for thanking for a good harvest and greeting spring. On March 2
this year, 1.28 billion Indians came out to the streets to celebrate together by throwing colored powder and water at each other.
India is very diverse country where varieties of physical features and cultural patterns co-exist. English and Hindi are the official languages, but there
are about 800 languages and 2,000 dialects altogether, and as many as 22 of them have been selected as official languages by states. There are no
less than 15 different languages in a panel on India’s paper money, in an alphabetical order. Numerous religions co-exist, from Hinduism to Islam,
Buddhism, Christianity, Sikhism, etc., as well as various ethnic groups. If diversity is a key word representing India, integration is a value shared and
followed by all Indians.

Holi was originally a Hindu festival, but it has developed into one
enjoyed by everybody regardless of religion, race, age and eco-
nomic status. The colored powder and water signify the victory of
good over evil and the arrival of spring after winter. It is held on the
full moon day of the last month in the Hindu calendar (early March
in the solar calendar). It differs depending on the region, but it is
usually held for two days to a week, and there are some places
where it is celebrated for two weeks.
The origin of Holi is very interesting. A long time ago, there was
a god named Krishna, who was the adopted son of a herdsman
couple. He was loved by many girls because of his good look and
charms, but only Radha was in his heart. Krishna was worried
that Radha, who had fair skin, would not like his dark skin color.
At the advice of his mother, he had some friends come over and
play by throwing colored powder and water at each other. Soon,
their bodies were coated in different colors that covered their skin
color. Consequently, Krishna and Radha fell in love, and the game
they played was passed down to become the Holi festival of today.

All Existences Mingled to Become OneDuring Holi, everybody becomes equal regardless of status, religion or
gender. Some may throw powder and water at people they have crush
on or shower friends or neighbors with powder for reconciliation over of
old scores.
The key rituals of Holi are performed over four days, including two days
before the festival. On Rang Pashi, two days before the full moon, all
family members gather to cover each other with colored powder and
water to wish them love and blessings. On Puno, one day before the
full moon, neighbors gather to burn a straw effigy of the witch Holika.
Unnecessary goods are burned together to send away the old days and
greet the new spring.
Parva, the day of the full moon, is the highlight of Holi. On this day, many
people come out to the streets, starting in the morning. They shout “Holi”
and throw colored powder called “Abir” at each other, laugh and play,
forgive and forget, say thanks and enjoy the festival.
MSI members gathered to celebrate Holi.
Kunal Kumar : Deputy Manager, MSI Support team
Greetings Mando family members! I would like to invite everybody to the exciting Holi festival held in
India every year. The staff of MSI spent a wonderful time at the annual festival. This year,
commemorative events were held to celebrate Holi at the Gurgaon and Bangalore offices on
March first and second.
Forget all hatred and sorrows and throw beautiful colors at each other. Why don’t you spend
a fun time with your friends, families and co-workers while eating delicious traditional
sweets such as Gujiya, Pakodi, Thandai, etc., which are varied like the colors?

(Mando Corporation Poland) were given
Polish donuts called “pączki.” Fat Thursday,
a traditional Catholic Christian feast, is on
the last Thursday before Lent and is when
people are allowed to eat as much as they
want before starting 40 days of fasting and
repentance. Thus, eating these high-calorie
donuts on Fat Thursday became a tradition.
There is a popular saying that those who do
not eat the donuts on Fat Thursday will be
