ToolsNeededforMakingMangaYouhavedifferentoptionsformakingmanga—fromsoftwaretopenonpaper.Softwarewilltypicallygiveyouwhatyouneedforthe different aspects of making manga, like helping you withscreentones and colors. If drawing on paper, you can usepencil, and finish it up by inking it with art pens, easy-to-findballpointpens,orspecialpensusedbyprofessionalmangaka(manga creators) in Japan, depending onwhat youwant andwhatyourbudgetis.Thissectionwilltalkaboutsomeofthoseoptions.

BeginningwithaSketchAllmangadrawingsstartwithasketch.Anysortofpaperwouldwork.Plentyofhighschoolstudentsdrawmangacharactersonprinterpaperornotebookpaper,butprofessionalsuse thickerpaperfortheirwork.Thesecanbefoundinsketchbookssoldinart stores and sometimes in retail stores in their office supplysection. In Japan, the type of paper suitable for drawingmonochrome manga (meaning manga using one color, likeblack) is called “kentpaper”andpackedkentpapersaresoldas “mangamanuscriptpaper”atart shops.And, likesomanyotherthingsthesedays,theycanalsobeboughtonline.

In Japan, artists sometimes use mechanical pencils withblue leadfor thepreliminarydrawingwheretheyputdownthebasicoutlineofthecharacter.Amechanicalpencilwithregulargray lead works as well. In this book, you’ll see blue for thepreliminary drawings, then a gray pencil for more detailedpenciling,followedbyinking.ThisisoneofthetypicalmethodsofmangacharacterdrawingusedinJapan,andit’ssuitableforlearnersatbeginnerorintermediatelevels.

Mechanicalpencilsaren’tusedasmuch inAmerica,but inJapan, they’re prized for their clean, straight lines and theiraffordable prices. In manga, you often see characters usingmechanicalpencils,andthere’sareasonforthat!

Ifyoudon’thaveblueorgrayleadforamechanicalpencil,aregular wooden pencil can also work, but you have to makesure it’s properly sharpened for the kind of lines you want tomake.

A ruler is also useful when drawing straight lines, likebackgroundbuildings.Itcanalsohelpyoumeasuredistance.

PensandInkingOncethedrawing isdone, then it is timefor inking.Onpaper,there are different options for how you want to ink, andsometimes Japanese mangaka and American comic bookinkersusedifferentmaterials.

A calligraphy dip pen called Speedball #102 is popularamong professional comic book inkers in the United States.Other artists usePilot ballpoint pens; these aren’t common inJapan,andinmanycases,publisherstheredonotapproveofusingballpointpens.Soaballpointpenisnotgoodifyouwantto show yourwork to a Japanese publisher or in a Japanesecompetition.However,ballpointpensareeasytofind,andiftheartisjustforfunornotforprofessionalmangapublishing,thentheyarefinetouse.

Specialty art pens can be bought in art stores, in somestoresthatsellofficesupplies,andonline.Sometimesyoucanbuyapackofpens(asopposedtoonepenthatholdsdifferentnibs).Ifyounoticenumbersonthepenslike“01”or“08,”theseare telling you how thick the ink linewill be.Getting a starterpackofpenslikethiscanbeagoodwaytogetstartedandletyouexperimentwithink.Waterproofinkisrecommended.

In Japan, themost common types of ink arePilotDraftingPenInkandKaimei-Bokuju.PilotDraftingPenInk,whichisalsoeasy to find in the United States, dries quickly and iswaterproof.

While pens work for the basic outlining of characters, abrush is used for filling in black spaces, like hair. Raphaelseries 8404 #2 or #3, Sharf brushes, and the JapaneseKuretakebrushpenareallusedbyAmericaninkers.Kuretakebrush pens were originally made for calligraphy and laterbecomepopularwithmanga.Feltnibsareoftennotwaterproof,though theyarealsoveryuseful forcoloring inblackhair,but

Manga Studio EX 4 (also called Comic Studio EX 4.0 inJapan)hasbeenpopularamongJapanesemangaartistsforitshighfunctionofcreatingmonochromemangaofmultiplepages.Though it’salready finishedselling inJapan, itstillhasahighreputation.

MangaStudio5 (alsocalledCLIPSTUDIOPAINTPRO) issuitable for drawing colored or monochrome illustrations andsingle-pagemanga.

The advanced version of it is Manga Studio EX 5 (alsocalled CLIP STUDIO PAINT EX). In addition to all of thefunctionsofMangaStudio5, ithasfunctionstocreatecoloredormonochromemangaofmultiplepagesandforanimation.

Screentones can be done with software, but we will alsoshow you how to do screentones by hand. Because noteveryone has access to screentones, there aren’t manyexamplesoftheminthebook.

One important aspect is the legs. In manga, legs are longerthanonrealhumans.Youdon’twanttomakethelegssolongthattheylookabsurd,butyoudowanttostretchthemalittle.

Mangaisfamousforhavingcharacterswithlargeeyes,butnotall characters inmanga do. Eye size depends on the type ofcharacter you want to draw.
