Manika NagareOver the last two years, I have made frequent trips to Tohoku to organize art workshops for children affected by the earthquake and tsunami. In contrast with the scenes of destruction, the sights that I could not tear my eyes away from were those filled with the natural beauty of the surrounding environment, the landscapes whose force impressed with a sheer strength and intensity.
Although my previous works tended to reflect a personal interest in human beings, I have recently started to trace the breath and pulse of the landscape that unfolds before my eyes.
When I stand before a magnificent natural wonder, I fear a potentially violent force within the sublime landscape. I have realized that all we, as individuals, can do is turn to an internal state of being, remain before the scene, and stare, taking in the contours. Our eyes form a line that wanders around, and this line of sight is directed back towards us, as one vision.
The works featured in Line of Sight depict the lines that live in nature – both the ones that we can perceive with our own eyes, and those that are invisible to us. All I intend to do is keep my eyes diligently trained on these lines, confront them, and continue painting.
