Best Start Reports—Kindergarten 2018 Each child in Kindergarten participated in a Best Start assessment with their class teacher at the beginning of the school year. Teachers use the information gained through these individual interviews to provide teaching and learning activities to meet the needs of each student. Kindergarten students will receive their Best Start report this week. Please note that students may not have displayed all their capabilities on the day. Students at this age learn quickly and may now have progressed further along the learning continuum. As partners in your child’s learning, we appreciate your time reading this report and the suggestions parents can use at home to assist further learning.

Easter Hat Parade - Tuesday 27th March Students in Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 will be participating in

the Easter Hat Parade on Tuesday 27th March.

Parents are invited to a Welcome Morning Tea from 9:20am in the hall

hosted by the P & C. Raffle tickets will be on sale as well as the Manly West

tea towels. The morning tea will flow into the start of the Easter Hat Parade

at 9:45am.

Please join us to watch the parade and bring a hat for sun protection. Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will create Easter bonnets with their buddies at school.

Year 6 Leadership Camp Narrabeen

Yesterday I had the pleasure of working with our Student Leadership Team at the leadership camp. Students were involved in initiative and team building

activities, as well as, developing a project to implement in the school. Students reported that they enjoyed the activities, learnt a lot about different styles of leaders and reflected on their roles within our school. They also

found it interesting and beneficial to meet and learn about what other leadership teams are doing in their schools.

Kitchen Garden

In the Kitchen Garden this week...

Year 3 have been learning all about seeds and flowers, how plants produce seeds and

flowers, as well as looking inside flowers at their anatomy, and learning how to sow seeds

in pots to plant out in the garden.

They have also been tasting pumpkin grown in the garden over summer and roasted with

cumin, as well as sunflower, sesame and pumpkin seeds - yum!

They have been working hard learning how to build and maintain compost bins and worm

farms too. If you have questions about what to put in a compost bin, ask a Year 3 student or come and see me in the garden on Wednesdays or

Thursdays.

There are plans aplenty in the Kitchen Garden!

We are looking to build a ‘playground’ library for our

Kitchen Garden. If anyone has the home handyman/woman skills and would be interested in helping

myself and a Year 5 class design and build a small library out of recycled or reclaimed materials, we

would love to hear from you!

There are some ideas of what we're thinking on this

website https://streetlibrary.org.au/build/

If anyone has a metal cabinet that could be re-purposed to build a street library I'd love to hear

from you.

Also looking for an old

rustic metal wheelbarrow

in reasonable condition,

to build a succulent

garden bed

Thanks

Dowdle

Library News

The 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) has begun! The PRC aims to encourage a

love of reading for leisure and pleasure and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. At Manly West PS, all students K – 2 will automatically meet the challenge as these students can be read to which makes reading the 30 books at school achievable. Many K – 2

students complete the PRC with their families at home and will be recognised for their individual efforts. Students in Years 3 – 6 are required to do their own reading of 20 books (15 from the PRC list & 5 free choice or all from the list).

All rules, registration and tips to complete the challenge are also available at the PRC website, https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html . During their library lessons, Year 3 are learning how to register themselves with their DET user names and passwords, and most of our Year 4 students hopefully remember from last year. The prizes for completing the challenge independently by Friday, August 31st 2018 are an

ASPIRE card, a colourful bookmark, your name published in the newsletter and a certificate from the Premier at the end of the school year. Any questions can be answered by the website or stop by the library and ask Mrs. Burke or I.

This week, each student will bring home a Scholastic Book Club ordering form which features a

selection of books and kits at reasonable prices. You are under NO OBLIGATION to make any purchases, but by doing so the school receives commission to put towards new library books. If you do plan on ordering, please do so online with LOOP or by sending in your order form and a cheque made out to ‘Scholastic Australia’ before or by Friday 23rd March, 2018. Thank you to parents, Kerrie & Tim King, for coordinating orders and the delivery of the

books to classrooms. If you are a new family to our school, there is detailed information below to understand the entire Scholastic Book Club process.

Happy reading!

Mrs Ellen Swick Teacher Librarian

Introduction to the Scholastic Book Club The Scholastic book club has been available at Manly West for a number of years. Many parents are familiar with it, but others may not be and there have been some changes in recent times. Here are some key points:

The book club is operated by Scholastic and is a commercial operation

Scholastic return 20% of sales value to the school as “rewards”

Manly West receives about $2,000 per year in rewards, and this money is spent by Ellen Swick in the

library on new books

The book club is made possible by parent volunteers who administer the Manly West details on the web

site, submit some orders, distribute books to classrooms, and handle exceptions

There is NO obligation to buy books – it is entirely at the discretion of individual families

We run book club once per term at Manly West. You can order books at other times too, but you will need

to pay for delivery to your home rather than have free delivery to the school

Buying books The process is easier than in it used to be, with a much improved online ordering system.

Paper catalogues are distributed to classrooms

Orders can be made for about 2 weeks

Payment options are online using a credit card or by cheque.

For the online option you place your order and pay online

For the cheque option you fill out the order form in the paper catalogue and return this to the school office in a sealed envelope with your cheque made out to Scholastic Australia

There are NO cash payments

Please order online if at all possible and only select the cheque option if you really have to (since this

requires parent volunteers to do an online order on your behalf)

Once the orders are closed the books are delivered to the school and distributed to classrooms

If you do not want your books sent to the classroom (perhaps it is a birthday gift) then

For online orders check the “Gift Order” box on the order screen For paper orders mark this boldly and clearly on the form

Any questions? Please check with Mrs Swick in the library or email her at [email protected] .

ABSENCES

To ensure the safety and welfare of the children in our care, BASC MUST BE NOTIFIED if a child

will be absent from a booked session. Non Notification delays our awareness of any legitimate

concern for a child’s safety. Also, whilst looking for children and contacting parents, our Educators

are having less time with the children in their care. Messages can be written ahead of time in each

room’s ‘Parent Message Book’ or by email to [email protected] (up to 2pm for the ASC

session). We can be contacted at late notice by phone on 9948 8113. Please note, the school

does not inform us of absent children or children collected from sickbay. There is a

Non-Notification of Absence Charge of $11 (incl GST).

WE WOULD PREFER NOTIFICATION OF AN ABSENCE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE (EVEN EARLY

ON THE MORNING FOR BEFORE SCHOOL SESSIONS) SO WE CAN OFFER EMERGENCY

CASUAL SPOTS IF NEEDED.

WAITING LIST

The waiting list continuously moves as families’ circumstances change. Further offers will be going

out this week. We understand it can be frustrating waiting for places but please be aware that due to

regulation requirements we can only cater for 150 children per session.
