Klar Series Ultrafiltration (UF) Process
Ultrafiltration is a pressure- driven purification process in which water and low molecular weight substances permeate a membrane while particles, col loids, and macromolecules are retained. The primary removal mechanism is size chemistry of the particles or membrane may affect the purification efficiency. Ultrafiltration pore ratin gs range from approximately 1K to 500K D, thereby makpermeable than nanofiltration (200tangential flow of UF such as hollowthe effective removal of colloids, proteins, bacter ia, pyrogens (e.g., gram- negative bacteria), and other organic molecules larger than t he membrane pore size. UF can be used as pretreatment to reverse osmosis or for the post tre atment of water in a biological process. The practical applic ations of the Ultrafiltration process in the water & wastewater industries are:
• Oil & Gas separation
• Surface water clarification
• Industrial wastewater treatment
• Pretreatment for RO process
• Post treatment for Biological P rocess
• High TSS storm water filtration

The objective is to clarify water/wastewater using the Klar unit contains a number of 8” Xof 480 sq. ft. per membrane cartridge. The UF syste m will reduce Turbidity and TSS to a very low level and produce water suitable for most RO process and post treatment for biological proces s. The U860 membrane is made of polyacrylonitr ile (PAN) and has a cutproprietary formulation of PAN has agents. Each Klar unit is protected by bag filters of 50 to 400 microns. The first line of protection will ensure the UF parts and equipment are well pro tected against large and abrasive debris.
The Kl ar series is an automatic unit, and comes with elec tric control panel. Filtration is done in an out-to- in mode. Feed water is pumped into the membrane mod ule from one end and out of the other end. The out-to- in mode of operation enables the module tohigher quantity of dirt, sustain higher fouling, and operate under less monitoring conditions without having any impact on the flow rate. Each Klar unit operates at a low pressure of below 5.0 psi and it could produce up to a flowgpm of filtrate (feed water dependent) per membrane. After the PLC has been set for automatic backflush, - typically once every 10 60 minutes – depending on water conditions the unit operates automatically.
The UF permeate is stored in the BF tank (the UF Product Tank (both tanks supplied by custome r). Water from the BF tank is used for backflushing of the UF membrane at the pre set inte rval. During back flush, air from the air blower is first introd uced into the membrane cartridge to loosen the dirt within the cartridge before back flushing. Recovery rate of the Klar uni t is > 95%

Each Klar unit also has a clean- inmembrane. Normally NaOCI is used in the CIP (50
UF filtered water will pass through an Activated Ca rbon Filter (optional) to remove dissolved unwanted contamina nts that may contribute to the odor & color of the water. Treated water will be routed to the Produ ct water tanks or designated us
