The Book Fair is Coming!!!!!

A Scholastic Book Fair is a fun event at our school where children can discover a love of books and

ignite a life-long passion for reading. Children read more, understand more, and are more likely to

continue reading when they have access to many books, and have the opportunity to choose what they

read.

This book fair begins after school on Monday, 27th May and will be open before and after school until

Thursday, 30th May.

Please visit the fair with your child/children. There will be great books and fun things to buy!

Grade 5-6 Local Government Incursion

Last Wednesday, 27th March the grade 5/6 students were treated to an incursion hosted by Wyndham

City Council’s Mayor Mia Shaw and fellow councillor Peter Maynard. Students were able to further their

inquiry study learning by being provided with information about voting, population growth, councillor

roles and local government.

The Mayor and Peter Maynard hosted a very informative and enjoyable incursion which has enhanced

inquiry learning for all students.

Manorvale Primary School is very thankful to the Mayor of Wyndham, Mia Shaw and Councillor Peter

Maynard for coming to the school and providing students with an in-depth and personal account about

how our local government is ruled and the many factors that affect its operation.

“The incursion was really fun. We learnt a lot of things that we could not learn from the internet. There are 95

babies born each week in Wyndham.” Jackie 5/6 TP

“It was fun because we got to learn how to become a mayor and you have to be 18 years old to be a councillor.

We got to see the golden chain and we learnt about what the Mayor does.” Zoe 5/6 TP

“When we went to meet the Mayor, we learnt about how many people live in Wyndham and about her job. Her

job is to take care of libraries, some roads, parks and gardens.” Samuel 5/6 CH

“We learnt about the gold plated chain that they Mayor wears on special occasions. I thought it was interesting

and the chain was shiny.” VJ 5/6 CH

“It was really interesting because they told so much of what they do. They built Aqua Pulse and it cost 54 million

dollars to build. There are lots of stages to go through to be a Mayor.” Elijah 5/6 LM

“The Mayor incursion was very fun and I got to learn a lot of interesting facts about being a Mayor. The gold

chain had the Wyndham City logo on it and it is gold plated.” Amelia 5/6 LM

“I think the incursion was fun to go to. It was interesting that the Mayor had to wear a gold plated chain on

special occasions.” Chilali 5/6 LR

“The incursion was great. We learnt how to become a Mayor and what the Mayor looks after. Peter Maynard

looks after sport.” Joash 5/6 LR

3/4 Cave Hill Creek - Beaufort

This year we are offering the 3/4 students the opportunity to participate in a camp at Cave Hill Creek in Beaufort. School camp is a valuable learning experience as it allows the student to experience a different environment and develop independence. Payment Details The total cost of the camp is $290. This covers the cost of accommodation, meals and camp activities. A deposit payment of $160 is due on Thursday, 2nd May 2019, along with the Student Excursion Consent Form. This will secure your child’s camp placement. The balance payment of $130 is due on Thursday, 30th May 2019. The balance must be finalised by this date. Please note: Families who meet the eligibility criteria can also use their Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund from DE&T to contribute towards the cost. Medication forms are to be completed and returned to school on the day of camp for students who require any medication whilst on camp. Camp information went home with students in years 3/4 last week. 3/4 Team

R.E.A.L Robotics Excursion On Wednesday, 20th March ten students from Manorvale Primary School went to the

Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing to learn about robotics and how to use them.

The students drew posters, and drove their own robots which were connected to iPads.

Later in the day, the Manorvale students received their own robot kit to build back at

school during their recess and lunch times. The students are using computer programming

to code their robot at school.

It was amazing to see the Spheros zooming around the room and everyone with iPads in

hand controlling them. Mr Toose, the Principal of Wyndham Park Primary School, stood in

the middle of the room as we drove the Spheros towards him. It was a really fun and

exciting experience to be there. (Sharif 5/6 CH)

When we went to the Robotics program we did all sorts of different things. First we learnt

an ‘attention grabber’. Mr Toose would say, “Focus one,” and everyone would clap once.

Then he’d say, “Focus two,” and we all had to clap twice. Next we designed a poster and it

was amazing. We thought of a team name and motto for our poster. Finally, we got to use

the Spheros and it was fun. (Jessica 5/6 TP)

We felt very welcomed by all the schools, especially Wyndham Park and Westgrove

Primary Schools. We met the Wyndham Park principal and he welcomed us like a

gentleman. Out group was split into three and we did activities like: drawing a team logo,

coding Spheros and brainstorming ‘How we can help astronauts in space.’ (Fatma 5/6 CH

and Leanne 5/6 LM)

With the robotics program, we were instructed to build our own robot with Lego

Mindstorms. It was challenging at first but we managed to get through it. (Cohen 5/6 TP)

The day we started to make the robot everyone was very confused but we tried our best

and managed to do it in a couple of weeks. On the day of the excursion we got to play and

learn how to control a Sphero. We did different activities and did activities like a poster/

logo, coding the Spheros and writing about how we can help space travellers. (Avril 5/6 LR)

We all would like to say thank you to the teachers who helped organise the day and

allowing us to work during lunch and snack times to construct our ROBOT.
