1 MANUAL FOR INSTALLATION, USE AND MAINTENANCE OF A SURLOC ALUMINUM SAFETY RAIL DEVICE This manual is intended to be used as part of an employee training program as required by OSHA. WARNING: Theseinstructionsmustbeprovidedtoallusers,climbersand rescuers. Pleasereadtheseinstructionscarefullyand completelybeforeusingthisproduct. TheusersofthisequipmentmustreadandunderstandALLoftheseinstructionspriortouseof this equipment. Whenusedasinstructed, theSur Localuminum safety rail devicewillreducetheuser'sriskofinjuryfrompotentiallyhazardousfalls. Useofthisproductwithoutreading,understandingandfollowingtheinstructions may result in serious injury or death. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all other safety equipment used in conjunction with this Sur Loc aluminum safety rail device. Follow these instructions for proper use, inspection,and maintenanceof this equipment. Thisproductisintended tobeused as p art of acompleteSur LocClimber'sBuddyladdersafetysystem. Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserandtheuser'smanagementtobecertain theuseristhoroughlytrainedinandcomplieswiththeproperinstallation,operationandlimitationsofthisproductaswellascareful inspection,maintenanceandstorageoftheproductbeforeandafteruse. Trainingandinstructionreviewshouldberepeatedatregular intervalsbytheuserandtheuser'smanagement. Thebuyersandusersofthisproductassumeallresponsibilitiesforsafetyandusenotin accordancewiththeseinstructions. IMPORTANT: Before using this equipment record the product identification information from the I.D. label in the inspection and maintenance log in section 8.0 of this manual. 1.0 APPLICATIONS 1.1 PURPOSE: The Sur‐Loc aluminum safety rail system will arrest thefallofpersonnel while climbing afixed Sur‐Locsafetyladderorafixed Sur‐Loc safetyrailadequatelyattached toafixed ladder.Thealuminumsafetyraildeviceisnot intendedtobeusedformaterialhandling. NOTE: TheInstaller andusermustinspectand ensure theladderandsafetyrail meets orexceeds all applicable local, state, and federal standards,includingOSHA prior to usingthe safetysystem. 1.2 LIMITATIONS: The Sur‐Loc aluminum safety rail device must be used with a Sur‐Loc safety system ladder or Sur‐Loc safety system rail on a fixed ladder. The Sur‐Loc safety device must be directly connectedtoanapprovedfullbody harnesswiththefactoryinstalled carabiner. Do not useconnectiondevices other thanthe factory installed carabiner.

    1.0APPLICATIONS

    1.1PURPOSE:TheSur‐LocaluminumsafetyrailsystemwillarrestthefallofpersonnelwhileclimbingafixedSur‐LocsafetyladderorafixedSur‐Locsafetyrailadequatelyattachedtoafixedladder.Thealuminumsafetyraildeviceisnotintendedtobeusedformaterialhandling.

    NOTE:TheInstallerandusermustinspectandensuretheladderandsafetyrailmeetsorexceedsallapplicablelocal,state,andfederalstandards,includingOSHApriortousingthesafetysystem.

    1.2LIMITATIONS:TheSur‐LocaluminumsafetyraildevicemustbeusedwithaSur‐LocsafetysystemladderorSur‐Locsafetysystemrailonafixedladder.TheSur‐Locsafetydevicemustbedirectlyconnectedtoanapprovedfullbodyharnesswiththefactoryinstalledcarabiner.Donotuseconnectiondevicesotherthanthefactoryinstalledcarabiner.

    NOTE:ANSIA14.3andOSHA1926.1053statesthatthelengthofconnectionbetweenthecarrierandattachmentpointmustnotexceed9inches.2.0SYSTEMREQUIREMENTS2.1COMPATIBILITYOFCOMPONENTSANDSUBSYSTEMS:ThisequipmentisdesignedforusewithSur‐Locapproved

    componentsandsubsystems.Theuseofnon‐approvedcomponentsandsubsystemsmayjeopardizecompatibilityofequipmentandcouldaffectthesafetyandreliabilityofthecompletesystem.ContactSur‐Locifyouhavequestionsaboutcompatibilityofequipment.

    3.0OPERATIONANDUSE:3.1CONNECTINGTHESUR‐LOCALUMINUMSAFETYRAILDEVICETOTHECARRIERRAIL:WARNING:Insituationswhereafallhazardexists,useaback‐upfallarrestsystem,suchasalanyard,toprotectagainstafall.Note:ANSIA14.3Whereastwoclimbersbutnotmorethanfour(average250lbseach)maybesimultaneouslyutilizingtheSur‐Locsafetysystem,onlyoneclimberisallowedbetweenintermediatemountings.

    Step1.Ensurethedeviceiscorrectlypositionedrelativetothecarrierrail.The“up”arrowonthedevicemustbepointingtotheascendingdirection(top).

    Step2.Withonehandfirmlygraspthedevice.Withthefreehand,disengagethespringloadedcambyraisingthecamtowardsthe"up"arrow.

    Step3.Whileholdingthecaminthe"up"position,aligntheslotsinthedevicewiththeoutersurfaceoftheSur‐Localuminum railattheopenbottomoftheSur‐Localuminumladderorrail.Oncethedeviceisadequatelyattachedtothe Sur‐Localuminumclimbingladderorrail,releasethecamtolockthedeviceontotheSur‐Localuminumladderor rail.

    Step4.PositionthedeviceontheSur‐Localuminumladderorrailinacomfortablepositiontoattachthefactory‐installed,self‐closing,self‐lockingcarabiner(ANSIZ359.1‐2007)totheclimbingD‐ringinthecenterofthechestonthefullbodysafetyharness.SeeSection3.2forinformationonconnectingtheSur‐LocAluminumSafetyRailDevicetothefullbodysafetyharness.

    3.2CONNECTINGTHESUR‐LOCALUMINUMSAFETYRAILDEVICETOTHEHARNESS:Connectthe

    devicetothefullbodyharnessattachmentpointdesignatedforladderclimbing.WhenconnectingtheSur‐Localuminumsafetyraildevicetothefullbodysafetyharness,ensuretheconnectioniscompatibleinsize,shape,andstrength.Useonlythefactoryinstalled,self‐closing,self‐lockingcarabinerwiththisdevice!Donotsubstituteoraddotherconnectors.Donotuseotherconnectingdevicessuchasashortlanyard,chain,link,orclevis.ConnectionbetweenthedeviceandfullbodyharnessmaybemadebeforeorafterthedevicehasbeeninstalledontotheSur‐Loccarrierrailorsafetyladder.Note:Connectingthedevicetotherail,atmid‐chestlevel,priortoconnectingthedevicetotheharnessisthepreferredsequenceofinstallation.ASCENDING:Toascendtheladder,climbupnormally.TheSur‐Locsafetyraildevicewillfollowtheclimber.DESCENDING:Todescendtheladder,climbdownsmoothlywhileslightlyleaningbacktoallowthecamtodisengage.Climbingdownoutofposition(leaningbackexcessively)willcauseunnecessaryfrictionwhichwillmakeyourdescentcumbersome.Ifthecamlocks,moveupwardslightlytoreleasethecamandcontinuetodescendtheladder.

    WhenclimbingiscompletedremovetheSur‐LocsafetyraildevicefromtheladderorrailbydisengagingtheCamandslidingthedeviceoffthebottomoftherailsystem.Thedevicecannowbedetachedfromthefullbodysafetyharnessandproperlystored.Ensureallhazardsareaddressedtoprovideclimbersafety.Hazardousenvironmentsorconditionsinclude,butarenotlimitedto;powerlines,heatorflame,explosivegases,physicalobstructions,andclimbersabilityandhealth.Ifafalloccurstheemployermusthavearescueplanandtheabilitytoimplementit.AfterafalltheSur‐LocaluminumsafetyraildevicemustbereturnedtoSur‐Locforacompletesafetyinspectiononthedevicebeforethedevicecanbeusedasafallprotectiondevice.

    4.0TRAINING 4.1TRAINING:Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserandpurchaserofthisequipmenttoassuretheyarefamiliarwiththeseinstructions,

    operatingcharacteristics,applicationlimits,andtheconsequencesofimproperuseofthisequipment.Usersandpurchasersofthisequipmentmustbetrainedinthecorrectcareanduseofthisequipment.

    IMPORTANT:Trainingmustbeconductedwithoutexposingtheusertoafallhazard.Trainingshouldberepeatedonaperiodicbasis.Thissafetydeviceisdesignedrestrainafallandtolimitthetravelofthedevicetolessthan6"perANSI14.3‐2008section7.3Step1.ProperlyequiptheclimberwithafullbodyharnessandattachtoSur‐LocaluminumsafetyladderorrailandSur‐Loc aluminumsafetyraildeviceasinstructedinsection3.0ofthisinstructionmanual.Step2.Ascendtheladdertoapproximatelythreefeet.Withbothhandsandfeetontheclimbingstructure,slightlyleanbackandflexkneesinaquicksittingmotiontosimulateafall.ThiswillactivatethebrakingcamintheSur‐Locsafetyraildevice.Step3.Afterthecamlocks,moveupwardtounlockthecam.Repeatstep2&3untiltrainingissatisfied.Step4.DescendtheladderanddetachfromtheSur‐Localuminumsafetyraildevice.5.0INSPECTION

    5.1FREQUENCY:

    BeforeEachUseinspecttheSur‐Localuminumsafetyraildeviceaccordingtosections5.2and5.3. FormalInspection:AformalinspectionoftheSur‐Localuminumsafetyraildevicemustbeperformedatleastannuallybyacompetentpersonotherthantheuser.Thefrequencyofformalinspectionsshouldbebasedonconditionsofuseorexposure.Seesections5.2and5.3.Recordtheinspectionresultsintheinspectionandmaintenanceloginsection8.0.

    AfteraFall:TheSur‐LocaluminumsafetyraildevicemustbereturnedtoSur‐Locforacompleteinspectionpriortoanyfurtheruse.5.2INSPECTIONGUIDELINES:

    Inspectthedevicebodyforbends,cracks,anddeformities.Allfastenersmustbesecurelyattached. Inspectthebrakingcamforsmoothoperation,ensuringitspringsbackintoitslockedpositionwhenreleased. Inspectthedevicebodyforwearontheinsidewheretherailpassesthrough.

    5.3Ifinspectionrevealsanunsafeordefectivecondition,removetheSur‐LocClimber'sBuddydevicefromserviceanddestroyorcontactanauthorizedservicecenterforrepair.Recordtheresultsininspectionandmaintenanceloginsection8.0ofthismanual.

    6.0MAINTENANCE,SERVICING,STORAGE

    TheSur‐Localuminumsafetyraildevicemaybecleanedusingcommercialparts,cleaningsolventsandrinsedwithwarm,soapywater.Lightmachineoilmaybeappliedtomovingpartsifrequired.Donotuseexcessiveoilorallowoiltocontactcamclampingsurfaces.Additionalmaintenanceandservicingproceduresmustbecompletedbyanauthorizedservicecenter.AuthorizationmustbeinwritingfromaSur‐Locauthorizedrepresentative.

    StoretheSur‐LocClimber'sBuddydeviceinacool,dry,cleanenvironment,outofdirectsunlight.Avoidareaswherechemicalsvaporsexist.Thoroughlyinspectthedeviceafterextendedstorage.

    7.0TERMINOLOGY

    AUTHORIZEDPERSON:Apersonassignedbytheemployertoperformdutiesatalocationwherethepersonwillbeexposedtoafallhazard(otherwisereferredtoas“user”forthepurposeoftheseinstructions).RESCUER:Personorpersonsotherthantherescuesubjectactingtoperformanassistedrescuebyoperationofarescuesystem.CERTIFIEDANCHORAGE:Ananchorageforfallarrest,positioning,restraint,orrescuesystemsthataqualifiedpersoncertifiestobecapableofsupportingthepotentialfallforcesthatcouldbeencounteredduringafallorthatmeetthecriteriaforacertifiedanchorageprescribedinthisstandard.

    WARRANTYEquipmentofferedbySUR‐LOCiswarrantedagainstfactorydefectsinworkmanshipandmaterialsforaperiodofoneyearfromdateofinstallationorusebytheowner,providedthatthisperiodshallnotexceedoneyearfromdateofshipment.Uponnoticeinwriting,SUR‐LOCwillpromptlyrepairorreplacealldefectiveitems.SUR‐LOCreservestherighttoelecttohaveanydefectiveitemreturnedtoitsplantforinspectionbeforemakingarepairorreplacement.Thiswarrantydoesnotcoverequipmentdamagesresultingfromabuse,damageintransit,orotherdamagebeyondthecontrolofSUR‐LOC.Thiswarrantyappliesonlytotheoriginalpurchaserandistheonlyoneapplicabletoour

    products,andisinlieuofallotherwarranties,expressedorimplied.
