1 What is MindManager MindJet? MindJet is an application that enables you to create mind maps containing topics, ideas and subtopics.

A mind map looks like the following and is used to illustrate ideas or processes.

2 Installing the application • Open my computer

You will note there is a (F:) drive. You may open the (F:) drive.

• Under the folder APPS you can navigate to the folder called MINDMANAGER11 NUUT where you will find an exe file and a txt document.

• Double click on the exe file called Mindjet_11.0.276_EN.exe and follow the instructions. When asked for

a licence code you may enter in the licence code that is in the txt file LICENCE CODE.txt.

3 Run the application One will be able to do this either by clicking on the icon on the desktop if one has been created or you will be able to run the application from the start menu.

4 Steps on how to create a mind map. • Give the central topic a name. (Such as the projects name).

• Add topics by clicking on the button on the tool bar (This can relate to your central topic or simply details about the project).

• Add subtopics (This is linked to topics and can be created by pressing the “insert” key).

• To add topics at the same level you can press the “enter” key.

• Link topics to files, web pages, other topic or map.

5 A quick tour of the ribbon with its tabs

5.1 A quick tour of the home tab

5.1.1 Clipboard group

These functions work in the same way as in MS WORD, EXCEL, etc.

• Cut

• Copy

• Paste

• Format Painter

• Clip board

5.1.2 Editing group

Split – split a topic into multiple topics.

Select – Select topics based on certain criteria.

Clear – Clear formatting from selected topics or part thereof.

5.2 A quick tour of the insert tab

5.2.1 Markers group

Markers can also be added to any topic or subtopic. Markers can be added in one of two ways:

1. By using the appropriate icon on the menu bar.

2. By clicking on the marker tab on the right hand side of the page.

5.2.2 Topic Elements group

A hyperlink, attachment, notes, image, spreadsheet, label or the date and time can be added to any topic or sub topic. It will normally appear as a clickable icon.

• Click on the topic/subtopic where the element must be added.

• Click on the element and provide the necessary information.

• To remove any element – right click on the element and select Delete/Remove/Cut.

Examples:

5.3 A quick tour of the review tab The Review Tab is for reviewing the map – tracking changes, inserting comments, etc.

The first group of commands has to do with proofing of the map:

• Spellchecker.

• Changing the autocorrect options.

• Setting the language.

• Map statistics –When it was created, by whom, how many topics, how many words, etc.

The second group of commands has to do with comments – adding, removing, previous and next comment.

The third group of commands manages the tracking of changes and the last group reviews the changes.

5.4 A quick tour of the view tab

The detail group can be used to collapse or to expand a map.

5.4.2 Example – Collapsed map

The Balance Map command allows the user to balance the map – that is to ensure that both sides of the map are more or less of equal size.

The Zoom group allows the user to zoom in or out.

6 File tab The file tab looks like the following:

• You my select one of the options on the opening screen.

6.1 To create a blank map • Click on the New Blank Map icon on the Quick Access Toolbar

Various options appear:

• Select your option by double clicking on the sample map or you may click on the sample map and then on Create.

7 Home tab Your Home tab will look like the following example:

7.1 Adding information to a map On the Home tab, in the insert group, do one of the following:

• Click Subtopic to add topic at the same level as the currently selected topic – a sibling topic. (If the central topic is selected, a main topic is created.)

• Click subtopic to add topic at the level below the currently selected topic.

• Click the Topic arrow to add:

• a subtopic

• a topic above the current topic (Topic Before).

• a topic as the current topics parent (Parent Topic).

• a floating Topic, and then click on the map backround where you want to add the topic.

• Click Callout to add a callout to the current topic.

7.1.1 A couple of keystrokes to create topics

7.2 Paste or import content You can import content to MindManager by pasting test from many applications to create topics on your current map. You can also import another map as a branch within the current map.

You will note that you can import from other applications such as Word or Excel using a button that will be created in those applications.

7.2.1 Moving a topic

• Click on the topic and drag it to the new position

• Moving a topic moves all sub topics connected to the topic to the new location.

7.2.2 Copying a topic

• Press <CONTROL> as the topic is being dragged and dropped.

OR

• Use the Copy and Paste commands on the Home tab of the ribbon.

• Select the topic and click on the Copy button (or use Ctrl+C)

• Select the new parent and click on Paste (or use Ctrl+V.

8 Formatting

8.1 Changing the format style of a map

• Click the Map Style button on the Home tab of the ribbon and select a new format style.

8.2 Changing the format of a topic Note: Formatting applied to an individual topic overrides the defaults of the Map Style formats.

Use the commands on the Home tab of the ribbon to change the formatting of a topic:

The Fill colour dropdown

The Topic lines dropdown The Font dropdown

More formatting options are available in the Format Dialogue box:

8.3 Creating a boundary around a set of topics A boundary is a way to emphasize one topic and its subtopics.

• Select the parent topic

• Click Boundary button on the Home tab of the ribbon and choose the type of boundary

To change the formatting of a boundary, double-click the boundary.

Example:

8.4 Adding relationships between topics Sometimes one topic or concept influences another and this can also be indicated on the map.

• Click Relationship button on the Home tab of the ribbon and choose the type of relationship

• Click on the first topic and then on the second

Related topics do not have to be on the same level or even in the same topic tree.

To reshape the relationship, drag the handles.

To change the formatting of a relationship, click on the relationship line to open the Format Relationships dialogue box.

9 Using icon and tag markers In Mindmanager icon and tag markers can be used to classify topics.

Icons - Small images to classify topics in a graphical way.

Tags - Short text labels to categorise topics.

Icons and tags can also be used to indicate task information or status.

9.1 Adding an icon to a topic • Select the topic • Click on the Icons button on the Home tab of the ribbon to select an icon.

Tip: Click on the icon to cycle through all the icons in a group.

Icons can also be added to the map from the Markers task pane on the right hand side of the screen. Options for organising markers and creating new ones will also be found here.

Available markers:

Groups of markers (A marker can easily be changed to another one within the group by just clicking on the marker).

Single markers (Cannot be changed to another one – has to be deleted).

9.2 Adding a tag to a topic Unlike icons, tags are specific to a certain project or map. There are no tags in Mindmanager until the user creates them.

To create a new tag:

• Click the Tags button on the Insert tab on the ribbon.

• Select Add new tag.

• Enter a tag name and click Add.

• Repeat as needed.

• When finished creating tags, click on Close.

• Now the created tags can be added to any topic.

Resource tags are used to manage Task information. Use the Resources command on the ribbon to create tags for people, computers or any other resource used on a project.

10 Adding hyperlinks, attachments and notes to a topic Hyperlinks, attachments and notes allow the user to add information to his/her map without complicating its appearance. All these can be inserted by using the commands on the Insert tab on the ribbon or by right-clicking the topic.

A topic can contain one Hyperlink, one Note and multiple Attachments or any combination.

Use a Hyperlink to connect to any item (map topic, website, file, another map, folder on a network) that is likely to change.

10.1 Hyperlinks

• Select the topic.

• Click on the Hyperlink command on the Insert tab on the ribbon.

• Click on Add Hyperlink.

The following dialogue box will appear:

Type in the URL or network path or click one of the icons to locate the target.

Clicking the Hyperlink inserted in the map, will open it in the embedded browser. A topic can only have one hyperlink associated with it.

10.2 Attachments Use the Attachment command to embed a document in the map. Attachments do not retain a link to the original document and they do not change when the original is edited. Use the browse option to select a file and add it to a topic. A topic can have multiple attachments, but only one attachment icon will appear. The attachment can be opened by clicking on its name in the dropdown list.

10.3 Notes • Use the Notes command on the Insert tab on the ribbon to include in-depth information about a topic

without cluttering the map.

• Notes text can be formatted and can include images, hyperlinks and tables. When finished exit the pane using the Close button.

• By pointing to the Note icon on the map, a summary of the note is shown. To edit the note, click on the Note icon.
