    ON-VEHICLE SERVICE

    ENGINE COOLANT LEAK CHECKING

    1. Confirm that the coolant level is up to the filler neck.Installa radiatorcap testerandapply160kPapressure and then check for leakage from the radiator hose o connections.

    Caution

    14100100167

    (1) Be sure to completely clean away any moisturefrom the places checked. When the tester is taken out, be careful not tospill any coolant from it.Becareful, when installingandremovingtheteste and when testing, not to deform the filler nec of the radiator.

    (2)

    2. Ifthereisleakage,repairorreplacetheappropriatepart.

RADIATOR CAP VALVE OPENING PRESSURECHECK 14100130203

    1.2.

Use a cap adapter to attach the cap to the tester.Increase the pressure until the indicator of the gaugestops moving.

    Limit: 64 kPaStandard value: 74 103 kPa

Replace the radiatorcap if the readingdoesnot remain

    at

    or

    above

    the

limit.NOTEBe sure that the cap is clean before testing, since rus or other foreign material on the cap seal will cause animproper indication.

    3.

    ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT 14100120354

    1. Drain theenginecoolantbyremoving thedrainplugandthen the radiator cap.Remove the cylinder block drain plug from the cylinde block to drain the engine coolant.Remove the reserve tank to drain the engine coolant.Whentheenginecoolanthasdrained, pourinwaterfromthe radiator cap to clean the engine coolant line.

    5. Coat the thread of the cylinderblock drain plug with thespecified sealant and tighten to the specified torque.

Specified sealant:3M Nut Locking Part No. 4171 or equivalent

Securely tighten the radiator drain plug.Install the reserve tank.Remove the air bleed bolt and replace the seal washer.

    Fill

    the

    radiator

    until

    the

    engine

    coolant

    flows

    from

    theairbleedboltsection,and then close theair bleedbolt.

    6.7.8.

    9.

10.Slowly pour the engine coolant into the mouth of theradiator until the radiator is full, and pour also into thereserve tank up to the FULL line.

    Recommended antifreeze:MITSUBISHI GENUINEEQUIVALENT

    Quantity: 9.0 (10.0) L 8.0 (9.0) L

    Caution

    COOLANT OR AN

    Do

    not

    use

    alcohol

    or

    methanol

    anti-freeze

    or

    any

engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanolanti-freeze. The use of an improper anti-freeze cancause the corrosion of the aluminum components .

    NOTE(1)(2)

( ) indicates figure for vehicles with rear heater.ForNorway,thenon-aminetypeofantifreezeshouldbe used.

    11. Install the radiator cap securely.12. Starttheengineandwarmtheengineuntilthethermostat

    opens.(Touchtheradiatorhosewithyourhandtocheckthat warm water is flowing.)

    13. After

    the

    thermostat

    opens,

    race

    the

    engine

    several

    times,and then stop the engine.

    14. Cool down the engine, and then pour engine coolantinto the reserve tank until the level reaches the FULLline. If the level is low, repeat the operation from step11.

    CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENT 14100110146

Measure the temperature and specificgravity of the enginecoolant to check the antifreeze concentration.

CautionIf the concentration of the anti-freeze is below 30 %, th anti-corrosion property will be adversely affected. Inaddition, if the concentration is above 60 %, both th anti-freezing

andengine coolingpropertierswill decrease, affecting the engine adversely. For these reasons, b sure to maintain the concentration level within thespecified

    range.

    COOLING FAN CHECK

    14100220023

Check blades for damage and cracks.Check for cracks and damage around bolt holes in fanhub.Ifanyportionoffanisdamagedorcracked,replacecoolingfan.

    FAN

    CLUTCH

CHECK Check to ensure that fluid in fan clutch is not leaking

at casejoint and seals. If fluid quantity decreases dueto leakage, fan speed will decrease and engineoverheating might result. When a fan attached to an engine is turned by hand, lightly, it is faulty.Check bimetal strip for damage.
