Important information
Read the driver's
handbook
The contents of this driver's manual aredetermined by the equipment, thesystems and the functions that the truckhas (so-called chassis control). Thetruck's chassis number is printed at thebottom of each page. Due to the chassiscontrol the driver's manual appliesspecifically for the truck with this chassisnumber, and it should be stored in thetruck to which it belongs.
Please read through the driver's manualbefore you drive the truck for the firsttime. This is a good way to learn moreabout the functions and equipment thetruck has, and to be able to use themproperly.
The table of contents in the front of themanual gives you an overview of thechapter structure and contents. In thealphabetical index at the back you cansearch directly for specific characteristicsor functions.
Special texts
The driver's manual uses the followinglevels of observation and warning texts.

Driver environment
For your safety at work, always wear a seat belt.Remember that it is a legal requirement in manycountries.
Driving position
It is important that you sit comfortably and have goodvisibility while you are driving. Arms and back musthave a restful, natural posture. So please devote a
little time to adjust mirrors, steering wheel and seataccording to your driving position before you start todrive.
If you drive long distances then you should changeyour driving position at regular intervals. Rememberthat a reclined driving position could cause injury toyour back and neck on uneven road surfaces. For thisreason you should straighten the backrest and head
restraint when driving on uneven road surfaces.
Climate system
You can use the climate system's recirculationfunction in order to quickly raise or lower thetemperature in the cab.
Use the parking heater in order to quickly raise thetemperature in a cold cab while driving.

Starting
Starting
When you start your truck there are several things youcan do to start smart, save fuel and reduce wear onthe truck.
Avoid cold starting
You can avoid cold starting by using the engineheater.
If you start with a cold engine you should switch onthe air intake heating function in your truck. Theengine will then be supplied with preheated air whichresults in an easier and more environmentally-friendlystart.
Never rev a cold engine. Warm up the engine bydriving gently at low engine speeds instead of letting itrun at idling speed while stationary.
Starting technique
Check the electronic system by depressing the brakelightly. If this test is not carried out then cruise controlwill not work.
Starting on hills
Activate the hill start aid function in order to brake thetruck while starting.

Driving in an urban area
Driving in an urban area
When driving in an urban area there are several tricksfor driving as efficiently and economically as possible.
Smart driving
The main rule for driving in an urban area is to planyour driving and avoid unnecessary stops. You savefuel as well as the truck's service brakes by using thetruck's auxiliary brakes as often as is possible. If you
have cruise control you should use it sparingly inheavy traffic. If you use it incorrectly it can lead tounnecessary braking and acceleration, which resultsin increased fuel consumption.
Think about the softer road users
Many serious accidents occur between trucks and thesofter road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.Correctly adjusted mirrors give you good visibility
around the vehicle, but be aware of the blind spotsbehind and in front of the truck as well as on thepassenger side.
Reversing warning unit
The reversing warning unit is available on your truckin order to prevent accidents while you are reversing. You should always have it activated. The pitch of thereversing warning unit can be set to high, low or silent(reversing warning unit deactivated). Only deactivatethe reversing warning unit in controlled environmentswhen it is fully justifiable.
Camera
Use the truck's camera as an aid while reversing.

Loading and unloading
Loading and unloading
You can make loading and unloading easier and saveboth time and effort by using the truck's airsuspension system.
Air suspension system
The air suspension system is programmable withmemory functions. You can store different heights inorder to quickly adapt to the loading docks you use on
a regular basis. You can also use the air suspensionto tilt the trailer downward for disconnecting.
Loading heavy loads
If you want to quickly unload a very heavy load youmust lower the truck's air suspension system to itslowest level, otherwise the wheel suspension may bedamaged.
When you have loaded or changed the height of thetruck you should, if you have adjustable headlamps, reset the lamps according to the new conditions. Afterwhich you get better visibility and avoid dazzling otherroad users.
Securing loads
Remember to secure your load in order to avoidaccidents and damage to goods and vehicles. A rule
of thumb is to secure the load at the front with at leastthe force equal to the full weight of the load. Securethe load at the rear and sides with at least the forceequal to half the weight of the load.
Trailer brake
Use the trailer brake when you are connecting thetrailer in order to adjust the position of the fifth wheel.Check that the trailer is properly connected.

Driving on a motorway
Driving on a motorway
There are many ways to drive efficiently andeconomically when you drive on a motorway. It isimportant to plan your driving.
Remember that roads with many uphill gradients andbends result in higher fuel consumption.
Cruise control
The truck's cruise control is a good tool for
maintaining an even speed. If you use the cruisecontrol then you should get used to disengaging it withone of the foot pedals so that you can actautomatically in a critical situation in as few stages aspossible.
Adapted speed
It is important to maintain a correctly adapted speed.Higher speed results in increased wind resistance andtherefore increased fuel consumption. Remember thatdoubled speed results in quadrupled wind resistance. You can reduce the truck's wind resistance andtherefore reduce fuel consumption by using Volvo'sspoiler package.
Alert gear changing
When accelerating, increase to the desired speed as
quickly as possible. We recommend that you driveaccording to the tachometer and maintain the enginespeed within the green zone on the gauge. Allow theengine run and use the truck's pulling power at lowrevolutions. This driving technique saves fuel andreduces wear on the engine and transmission.Remember that too many gear changes may result inincreased fuel consumption.
Use the auxiliary brakes
You can reduce the wear on the truck's service brakesby using the truck's auxiliary brakes. If you only usethe auxiliary brakes while you are driving it isbeneficial to use the service brake regularly in order toprevent the formation of coatings on the brake linings, which could result in impaired braking performance.
You can also use the "Brake blending" function forcontrolled braking. "Brake blending" assists the
auxiliary brakes while you are braking.
Rolling resistance
Rolling resistance plays a major role in your fuelconsumption. It is important to use correctly adaptedtyres and take care to ensure the correct tyrepressure. Check the tyre pressure at least once every14 days. Incorrect tyre pressure results in increasedtyre wear and increased fuel consumption. Check the
wheel axle settings on a regular basis at a Volvoworkshop.
Bogie lift
Raise the bogie axle while you are driving with anempty truck or with a light load. This way you reducethe friction against the road surface and save fuel.

Driving in hilly terrain
Driving in hilly terrain
Your driving technique in hilly terrain can make amajor difference to fuel consumption.
Uphill
When approaching an uphill gradient you should try tomaintain your speed and allow the engine to workhard so that you can quickly reach the crest of the hill.Release the accelerator pedal just before you reach
the summit and coast over it. When you change geartry to drive according to the tachometer instead of byengine noise. Maintain the engine speed within thegreen zone on the gauge and use the truck's pullingpower at low revolutions.
Downhill
On downhill gradients you should try to avoidaccelerating and instead allow the truck to increase
speed by coasting. Control the speed downhill withthe truck's auxiliary brakes. Make it a habit tocompletely remove your foot from the acceleratorpedal when you are coasting. Use cruise controlsparingly in hilly terrain as excessive use may result inincreased fuel consumption.
Automatic gearbox
You can use the truck's "Kick-down" function in orderto obtain maximum engine power for driving on asteep hill for example. This will give you an automaticdownshift.

Driving on a slippery road surface
Driving on a slippery road surface
Your truck is equipped with several different functionsto facilitate driving on slippery road surfaces, but themost important factor for driving safely is that youadapt your speed to the road surface.
TCS
TCS is a system that automatically preventswheelspin. If you find yourself in a situation where you
want to allow the wheels to spin more then you canengage the "Off-road TCS" function. Do not forget todisengage the function when you leave the slipperyarea.
Differential lock
On an extremely slippery surface you can engage thedifferential lock so that the wheels drive at the samespeed. Drive carefully when you have the differential
lock engaged. Do not forget to disengage it when youleave the slippery area. If you drive with thedifferential lock engaged on firm ground you riskdamaging the driven axles and wheels.
Bogie weight
For a better grip on slippery road surfaces you cantemporarily redistribute the bogie weight to get moreweight on the driving axle. The function can be used
to drive away when you get stuck, but also for normaldriving that requires a little extra grip in order to makegood progress. If you are driving in difficult terrainthen you can increase the ground clearance by usingthe air suspension.

Driving on wintry road surfaces
When driving on wintry road surfaces there areseveral functions available for you to use.
Climate system
If there is misting or ice on the windows then you canuse the climate system's defroster function to clear thewindows. In snow flurries for example you should setair distribution to just the floor in order to avoid melting
the snow on the windscreen which then freezes in aheadwind. Ice or snow on the door mirrors is mosteasily removed by activating door mirror heating.
Snow chains
If you need to use snow chains remember that snowchains on the front wheel axle should primarily bemounted on the passenger side to avoid damagingthe link rod on the driver's side.

Parking
Parking
When you stop to park there are several things youshould think about:
Avoid launch control
The truck does not need to run at idling speed beforedriving off. Warm up the engine at low engine speeds.
Avoid launch control during normal driving as well.Launch control normally accounts for 5-6 percent oftotal fuel consumption, of which 50-80% isunnecessary idling.
Hard driving
After a lot of hard driving you should allow the engineto run at idling speed for several minutes whilestationary before switching it off in order to reducewear on the engine.
Parking brakePerform a brake test if you need to park the truck witha trailer on a hill. This is in order to ensure that thebraking force is sufficient even if there is an airleakage on the trailer.
Hot tyres
AdBlue
If you drive your truck in a Nordic climate (below 0 C)then you should wait for 90 seconds before switchingoff the main switch on the truck. Then the AdBluesolution is cleaned from the system. On trucks withelectrically operated main switch you can switch offthe current using the remote control.
Hot tyres
The tyres may be hot after driving a long distance. When parking on a gradient and on wintry roadsurfaces the tyres may melt the surface below to formice and the truck can slide away. Aim to park on alevel road surface.

Refuelling
Refuelling
When you stop to refuel you should take theopportunity to check through your truck.
AdBlue
Make it a habit to check the level in the AdBluetankwhile you are refuelling. Running the engine without
AdBlue can damage the SCR system.
Make sure you wipe up any spillage when filling
AdBlue. The solution may react with certain metalsurfaces. The AdBluetank is only intended for AdBlue.Other fuels or dirt in the tank can damage the engineand the fuel system.
Correct tyre pressure
Check the tyre pressure while refuelling or at leastonce every 14 days. Incorrect tyre pressure results inincreased fuel consumption and increased tyre wear.
The truck's driving characteristics can be affected byincorrect tyre pressure.

Service and maintenance
You can reduce your costs by performing regularmaintenance and keeping the truck in good condition. The truck's engine works at its best and lasts longer ifyou use the fuel and the oils that are recommendedby Volvo.
Ask your Volvo workshop to assist you to draw up anindividual service schedule for your particular truck.
Wheel alignmentRemember to make regular checks on front wheelalignment and the axles' angles on both tractor andtrailer. Wheel alignment is important for keeping fuelconsumption low and for reducing wear on the tyres. The tyres wear out least if they are not unevenlyloaded or overloaded.
When changing tyres, in the event of a puncture for
example, you can utilise the truck's air suspensionsystem to raise the truck.
Air system
In order that the air system in the truck should workproperly it is important to check the function of the airdrier by periodically draining the primary tank or oneof the circuit tanks. If water comes out from the airtanks then the air drier's filter insert must be replaced
as soon as possible.
During winter, a hissing sound when pressurereleases indicates that the heating coil in the airsystem is operative.
Batteries
If the batteries shall be disconnected then it isimportant that the truck is in the "Parked" functionmode.

Airbag
When does the airbag deploy?
The airbag is located in the centre of thesteering wheel and only deploys in theevent of a frontal collisionwith a heavyor fixed object.
The airbag will not deploy in a collisionwith a soft object, such as a snowdrift or
a bush, in a collision at low speed or withpure side impact collisions, rear-endcollisions or if the truck should overturn.
The extent of the damage to sheet metalin a collision is not a measure of whetheror not the system is triggered.
The hazard warning lights are activatedautomatically when the airbag deploys.
All doors are unlocked via the centrallocking function at the same time.
WARNING
The fact that the truck is equipped with anairbag does notreplace the use of the seatbelt! The airbag is notdeployed in a rear-end collision, side collision or if the truckoverturns.Always wear a seat belt
If the airbag has inflated
CAUTION
Never drive with a deployed airbag! Theairbag hangs out and makes the truckdifficult to steer. Other safety systems mayalso be damaged. The smoke and dustcreated during airbag deployment maycause skin and eye irritation in the event ofprolonged exposure.
If the airbag has deployed:
Tow the truck to an authorised Volvoworkshop. Do notdrive with adeployed airbag.
Have an authorised Volvo workshopreplace the components in thesystem.
Only Volvo genuine parts should beused when components are replaced(airbag, belts, etc.).
WARNING
Neverattempt to repair any part of the
system yourself. Any work in the systemmay cause malfunctions and serious injuryand must only be performed by anauthorised Volvo workshop.
