Mrmol/MarbleRoca de textura compacta ycristalina, veteada ocoloreada. Rock with a compact andcrystalline texture, veined orcoloured.

Caliza/LimestoneSiempre de colores clidos,textura heterognea. Always in warm colours witha wide range of textures.

Arenisca/SandstoneFormada por arena de cuarzoque le comunica

mayor o menor dureza.Clida. Formed by quartz sand thatimbues it with greater orlesser hardness. Warm.

Pizarra/SlateNegra, azulada, verdosa...Opaca, tenaz, homognea, degrano muy fino. Black, bluish, greenish...Opaque, tough, uniform andwith a very fine grain.

No es lo mismo concebir para un centro comercial oedificio pblico que para un bloque de viviendas ouna vivienda unifamiliar, ni si se coloca en suelos ocomo revestimiento, porque los requerimientos varan.En un pavimento se debe de considerar el trfico alque va estar sometido (vehculos, personas, contrfico intenso, medio o bajo), la humedad que actasobre l de forma casi permanente, las heladas enclimas fros, fenmenos como manchas en elsubstrato de apoyo, etc.En el caso de los revestimientos su eleccin es unproceso muy delicado, ya que una mala decisin puededar lugar a mltiples problemas, como roturas,desprendimientos, oxidaciones y decoloraciones,etc., con el consiguiente perjuicio econmico y demala imagen para el material.Y por ltimo, los acabados superficiales ademsde su importancia esttica influyen en otrascaractersticas tcnicas, por ejemplo los pulidos enexteriores no son recomendables, ya que tienden aresbalar, aunque se puede no renunciar a este acabadoincluyendo bandas antideslizantes en su superficie.Sin embargo, el pulido es perfecto para encimeras oescaleras interiores por su fcil limpieza y escasaabsorcin de lquidos que pueden manchar la piedra.Por tanto, es fundamental elegir el tipo de material yla textura superficial adecuada para cada uso y asevitar sorpresas posteriores.

When choosing the materials to be used, thoughtmust first be given to where they are to be placed. It is not the same to cater for a shopping centre orpublic building as for a residential building or detachedhome, or for laying as flooring or as cladding, asrequirements vary.In terms of flooring, consideration needs to be givento the use it will have to withstand (vehicles, people,with intense, medium or light traffic), the humidityacting upon it on an almost constant basis, icing incold climates, phenomena such as stains in thesupporting underlay, and so forth.In the case of cladding , their selection is anextremely tricky process, as a poor decision maylead to numerous problems, such as breakages,detachments, rusting and fading, etc., with the ensuingcost in terms of both money and the materialsimage.Finally, and in addition to their aesthetic importance,surface finishes also have a bearing on other technicalspecifications, whereby polishes are not recommendedfor some uses, for example outside, as they tend to beslippery, although this finish may still be used if non-slip strips are attached to the surface. Yet a polishedfinish is ideal for countertops or interior stairways,as it is easy to clean and has a low absorbance ofliquids that might stain the stone.It is therefore essential to choose the type of materialand the surface texture that is right for each caseand so avoid surprises later on.
