About the Epson LC Tapes for LABELWORKS
Epsons LabelWorks range is all about making organisation easier, whether its
in the office, down in the stock room or even on various industrial job locations.
To do this, all Epson LabelWork models use LC tape cartridges, which help
ensure you create durable, eye-catching labels every time.
A brief history of LC tapes
Back in 1991, Epson began developing LC tapes with its OEM partner in Japan, providing them with durable, high-quality
labels for their label makers. Since then, Epson has continued to develop new material for these tapes, such as reflective
and heat-resistant material, to replicate the different ways businesses use LC tapes.
Epson starts developing label makers with an OEM partner in Japan.
Label makers and tapes are released in
Korea as branded products "Prifia".
Heat-resistant tapes are released.
Label makers and 36mm wide tapes are
launched by Epsons OEM partner.
First label makers and tapes (up to 24mm width)are launched by Epsons OEM partner.
LC tapes are released worldwide as part
of Epsons new LabelWorks range.

Features of LC Tapes
LC tapes are available in a range of sizes from 6mm up to 36mm
to help you create labels for a variety of different applications.
LC tapes are available in a wide range of colours, both text and
tape, as well as materials, such as fluorescent, matte, metallic
and clear.
All standard LC tapes contain Polyethylene terephalate (PET), due
to its durability. In addition, LC tapes are available in a variety of
shapes and finishes that are suitable for a wide range of jobs in and
around the office, such as:

For efficient labelling
LC tapes are designed to be as flexible and as durable as you need them to be, while also offering an
environmentally-friendly alternative to other labels. Every label printed with LC tape has a multi-layered structure for
high durability, can be printed with reduced margins to help cut wastage and are free from chlorine.
Eco Features
When printing labels, margins can be reduced to ensure less tape is wasted per label. This helps reduce labelling costs,
so you get the most out of each LC tape cartridge, and means you can use LC tapes much more efficiently.
As Epson labels can be used for a variety of needs, LC tapes need to be highly durable to ensure they can do their job while at
the same time, offer great flexibility. Through research, Epson discovered that depending on traditional laminated finishes
would make labels too thick and result in labels that would be unsuitable for many applications. With this in mind, Epson was
able to develop a new label structure for its LC tape, which offered excellent durability and optimal thickness without relying on
laminated finishes.
Margin differs between LabelWork models.

Unlike competitors cartridges, LC tapes contain a tape roller and feature a unique structure that safely houses both the tape
and ink ribbon. This prevents the tape and ink ribbon from damage when the cartridge is installed.

Testing LC tapes
To ensure that Epson labels are suitable for a variety of environments, they are put under rigorous
evaluation tests, both by Epson and third-party independent organisations. In the next few pages,
you will find details of each test Epson labels went through and what their results were.
Results shown in this manual are based on test conducted by Epson and independent third-party organisations.

Temperature
Under various test conditions, text printed on heat-resistant
labels was shown to cope with different temperatures without
peeling or fading. Text printed on standard LC tapes were also
shown to have positive results.

Tests were conducted to confirm the condition of each material when exposed to various temperatures. 12mm-wide tapes
were applied to a stainless-steel sheet and left in an environment with a high temperature, low temperature, and
thermal-shocks. The results are shown in the table below.

Temperature
Labels exposed to high temperatures for long periods can be prone to shrinkage, which can be a
problem for important warning labels. Epsons heat-resistant LC tapes are designed not to shrink, even
when exposed to temperatures of 200C for up to 10 hours.
Second temperature test
Second temperature test results
Tests were conducted to confirm the shrinkage of each tape at high temperature. 12mm-wide tapes were mounted onto an
electronic circuit board and then placed into a reflow oven. To ensure accurate results, the reflow oven temperature was
adjusted for lead-free solder (Pb-free solder) and then slowly increased. You can see the results below, comparing a

Curved surface adhesive test results
Tests were conducted to confirm the adhesive strength of a standard tape when applied to a curved surface. 12mm-wide
adhesive tapes were applied to a stainless steel bar (8mm in diameter) and a vinyl chloride bar (3mm in diameter).
Labels were applied in three different ways (outlined below) and left at room temperature (20C to 25C) for two weeks
and then evaluated for peeling. The results are shown in the table below.

In addition to flat surfaces, LabelWorks tapes can also be attached to a variety of curved surfaces,
such as pipes, cables and metal bars. Using dedicated cable wrap labels, printed text is given added
protection with a transparent layer on top. This helps labels last even longer under more strenuous
environments.

Labels that come into contact with other surfaces over long periods can make text unreadable, and can
be a problem for important warning labels or asset tagging. To ensure all LC tapes are able to work in
these conditions, tests were run to measure their effectiveness in the following scenarios.
Abrasion test
Abrasion test results
First abrasion test plastic eraser
Tests were conducted to confirm the durability of standard tape
when rubbed with a plastic eraser. 12mm-wide tapes were
rubbed 50 times with a 2kg weight attached to a machine, at a 90
degree angle.
Second abrasion test copper coin
Tests were conducted to confirm the durability of standard tape
when rubbed with a copper coin. 12mm-wide tapes were rubbed
40 times with a 500g weight by hand, at a 45 degree angle.
Third abrasion test chemical and solvents
Tests were conducted to confirm the durability of standard tapes
when rubbed with various cloths soaked in different chemicals and
solvents. 12mm-wide tapes were rubbed 50 times with a cloth
soaked with 4cc of a chosen chemical or solvent, attached to a
machine with a 500g weight.

Which Epson LabelWorks use LC tapes?
Any LabelWorks model featuring the LC tape logo is compatible with LC tapes.
How thick is each tape?
Standard LC tape is 70m, without backing paper
All tapes, other than those listed below, are the same thickness as standard tape. All values mentioned below include backing paper.
Glow-in-the-dark: 350m Reflective: 220m
Fluorescent: 160m Cable wrap: 100m
Matte paper: 140m Strong adhesive: 160m
Ribbon: 180m Heat resistant: 160m
Iron-on: 200m Decorative masking tape (Washi): 170m
Will coloured labels fade over time?
As with all colour prints, colours may slightly fade over time. You may notice some colours discolour a little
quicker, in comparison to others, due to material and colour. However, test results have shown that LC
tapes are very durable, resisting water and withstanding hot and cold conditions.
How should I store LC tapes?
LC tapes should be stored in a cool environment, and avoid high temperatures and high humidity.
The recommended storing environment is:
Temperature: -10C to 40C
Humidity: 80%RH or less
Will tapes give off harmful emissions if accidentally burnt?
No, LC tapes are made from chlorine-free material, so are free from harmful emissions if accidentally
burned or recycled in an incinerator.
Do LC tapes contain silicone?
No, LC tapes do not contain silicone substances.
Do LC tapes contain chloroethene?
No, LC tapes do not contain Chloroethene.
Do LC tapes contain natural rubber?
No, LC tapes do not contain natural rubber.
