CRIMINALS ARECRIMINALS ARE OPPORTUNISTOPPORTUNIST

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to impact the United States, criminals are taking this opportunity to prey on individuals.

Some potential scams to watch out for include:

Phishing: The fraudulent practice of sending emails disguised as coming from reputable companies in order to entice people to reveal personal information, such as passwords or credit card numbers. Social Engineering: The use of social media to seek donations for fake charitable causes.

Nondelivery Scams: Fake advertisements for in-demand medical supplies that can be used to prevent/protect against the coronavirus. The criminals will demand up front payment or initial deposits then keep your money and never complete delivery of the ordered products.

Listed below are some tips to help protect you from scams. • Do not respond to calls or text from

unknown numbers.• Never share your personal or financial

information via email, text messages, or over the phone.

• Be cautious if you are being pressured to share any information or make a payment.

• Scammers often spoof phone

numbers to trick you into answering or responding.

• Do not click any links in a text message. If a friend sends you a text with a suspicious link that seems out of character, call them to make sure they were not hacked.

• Always check on a charity by calling or actually looking at their website before donating money.
