Pastor’s Reflection
The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. "In the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth and under the earth" (Phil 2:10). Christ's name is chosen in heaven, and the Angel Gabriel announces it when he informs the Blessed Virgin of the incarna on: "Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus." It is a name that has marvelous implica ons, for it means "savior." The very name bespeaks the magnitude of His mission, His infinite love, a love that will cause Him to offer Himself up for us.
The name of Jesus is the sweetest of all names, and He who bears it is most worthy of all love. He who calls Jesus his friend can be assured that this friend is the most devoted and unselfish of all friends.
Jesus is our all. In His name we may pray to the Father with assurance of being heard. In His name the Church administers all her sacraments. In His name she offers all her prayers and blesses homes, the fields, and the sick. In the name of Jesus she casts out evil spirits, and at the hour of our death bids us, "Go forth, Chris an soul." She assures us that whoever shall call upon this name will be saved. When our soul has departed this life to seek its eternal home, the Church asks in the name of Jesus, "Eternal rest give unto him, O Lord.”
Prayer: Eternal Father, who did give to your incarnate Son the holy name of Jesus to be the sign of our salva on: Plant in every heart, we beseech you, the love of him who is the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

St. Agnes Con nues the Christmas Tradi on at St. Mary’s
Approximately 113 seniors at St. Mary’s Center in Oakland enjoyed a fes ve Christmas meal thanks to the generosity of so many members of our Parish. A fabulous turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served, and Father Johnson joined us and gave the Blessing before the meal. Our St. Agnes choir entertained the many seniors by singing Christmas carols, and there was even a visit by Santa. Many thanks to all those who helped make this event such a success, including all those who roasted and donated turkeys; the Knights of Columbus who unselfishly gave up their Sunday morning to carve the turkeys; the ladies from Helping Hands who donated the pumpkin pies; the St. Agnes choir who all sang so beau fully; Father Johnson, who no ma er how busy he is on a Sunday, comes to the event to give the Blessing; our very own Santa Claus, who is also very busy this me of year, but makes the me for us because
what would a Christmas event be without him; the many volunteers who worked relessly in the kitchen preparing, serving and cleaning up a er the meal; and Parma Deli who graciously lent us some of their catering equipment which made our job so much easier. It was a wonderful day, and a great me was had by all, especially the seniors.

From the School Newsle er: Are you having difficulty managing your child’s use of technology? Do you find you are arguing over video games or cell phones? If your answer is yes, you might want to visit the website: www.screenagersmovie.com. I know this may be ironic that I’m sending you online to access informa on but . . . Many of you may have heard about or even personally viewed the documentary Screenagers that explores the effects of screen me on our children and their social interac ons. Film producer and physician Dr. Delaney Ruston experienced the ups and downs with her own children in monitoring their use of technology and decided to research the impact the digital world was having on their genera on. Did you know that the average child spends 6.5 hours in front of a screen each day? There is a GREAT ar cle on the Screenagers movie website (www.screenagersmovie.com) describing a new study that shows how the brain in children ages 9‐10, who spend a minimum of 7 hours a day on technology, is physically changing the area that directs problem solving and execu ve func oning! To read about this study and a second ar cle on alterna ve gi s that are screenless, visit the Screenagers movie website and click on Tech‐talktuesdays. There are a variety of ar cles within this link worth reading. Many of our children think they can’t survive without video games or their cell phones. Rather than have this be a source of conflict, parents and their children need to work together to reach a compromise. Informa on is cri cal in order for this to happen so parents can make informed decisions to lead this discussion. With this in mind, I offer you the following ar cle from the East Bay Times regarding the popular video game Fortnite. So many of our children not only play this game but have such a hard me separa ng from it, that I thought it was worth bringing this ar cle to your a en on. Your children won’t be pleased but then again . . . h p://eastbay mes.ca.newsmemory.com/?publink=0047c1c30
