As the country gets into election mode it is interesting to look back and

see what was happening 100 years ago in New Zealand politics. On

November 25 1902 the liberals led by Richard John Seddon or "King

Dick" won their fifth successive triennial election. There were also four

Maori members. Wiremu Pere, Eastern Maori, Hone Heke

(grand-nephew of the famous Nga Puhi chief) Northern Maori,

Tame Parata, Southern Maori and Henare Kaihau, Western

Maori. The 1902 election was determined by the

first-past-the post electoral system and all electorates

returned one member only. Prior to 1902, there were

multi-member constituencies in the main centres which

normally returned three MHRs. From 1902 the term

"Prime Minister" replaced the earlier term "Premier".

Barbara Vine – The blood doctor. When Martin Nanther, Hereditary Peer in the House of Lords, is choosing the subject of his next biography, he becomes intrigued by the life of his own great-grandfather, Henry Nanther. So grateful was Queen Victoria for Henry’s services as physician to the royal family that she granted him a peerage, making him a lord, the first doctor ever to be so honoured. Henry had been especially attentive to haemophiliacs in the royal family, for he was obsessed with blood. As he recounted in his diary, “Red is my favourite colour. To me a splash of blood is beautiful, and I profoundly lack understanding of those who flinch or even faint at the sight of it.” As his research deepens, Martin begins to uncover hints that his great-grandfather’s fascination with blood may have had its darker side. The murder of Henry’s fiancée, the death of his young son, the remarkable number of relatives and friends who died mysteriously—could all these have been mere coincidence? Martin scours England and America for relatives whose attics or memories might hold clues, until finally the tragic truth stands revealed. Fay Weldon – Auto da Fay: a memoir

Fay Weldon, one of the pre-eminent writers of our times, has crammed more than most into her years. From the 1930s to

the 2000s, Weldon has seen and lived it all. As a child in New Zealand, as young and poor in London, as unmarried mother, as wife, lover, playwright,

novelist, feminist, anti-feminist,there are few battles she hasn’t fought Her life and times cover love, sex, babies, blokes, poverty,

work, politics, and some very famous people.

Three sisters ages 92, 94, and 96 live in a house together. One

night, the 96 year old starts a bath. She puts her foot in and pauses.

"Was I getting in or out of the bath??" The 94 year old yells back,

"I don’t know, but I'll come up and see!" She starts up the stairs

and pauses. "Was I going up the stairs or down??" The 92 year old

is sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She

shakes her head and says, "I sure hope I never get that forgetful."

She knocks on wood for good measure. She then yells to her sisters,

"I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the

door!"

FLETCHER FLASH

What a very busy month it has been for

Fletcher with a regular flow of schools

coming in to hear a story, learn about

the library and of course, meet Fletcher

Tuatara. Fletcher has met children

from Otonga, Whakarewarewa, St Mary’s

and Lynmore schools. In fact a total of

19 classes either came to the library or

met Fletcher at their schools. 87 new entrants brought their

certificates in to the library, received their free book and

Fletcher Tuatara library card. We look forward to a long and

happy association with these children.

Petanque CHAMPION in our midst !!!

Jane Gilbert, Library Manager has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Petanque Championships to be held in New Caledonia this September. Last weekend teams from all over New Zealand played against each other in the selection tournament. Jane’s team progressed easily to the finals where they beat the top seeded team three times out of three games. The games were long and tactical and the final game was played under the lighting of the streetlamps on the edge of the terrain with Jane playing the final, and matchwinning boule at 6.40 pm. Two other Rotorua players, Andy Gilbert and Sue Neilson have also been selected for the final twelve.

Congratulations and all the best for

New Caledonia!!

Fletcher’s book choice for July is the

BLACK CAT series, distinguishable by the

(you guessed it) black cat label on the spine. These books are in the children’s FICTION

area and are suitable for newly confident

readers. There are plenty of illustrations

too. Two new titles are Norma Twister’s

Blister by David Witt and Sea Cat and

Dragon King by Angela Carter.

Reminder:

Please refrain from marking your library books in any way. Some copies are returned with highlighted and underlined texts which is very annoying for the next borrowers. Patrons can be charged for a replacement for defacing any library item.
