    G eneral Information

    Welcome! We hope this guide will make your visit more

    enjoyable. Visit http://ww w.lanl.gov/welcom e/ for detailed

    visitor and host information .

    TAXIS Government transportation service (667-TAXI or

    667 -829 4)* is available for official Laborator y visitors from

    8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on a limited basis from 5:00 to6:00 p.m . All travel must be approved by the host group.

    REN TAL CARS / BUS SERVICE Rent al cars are available in Los

    Alamos, Santa Fe, and Albuqu erque. Shut tle bus service (Shut tlejack,

    982-4311, and Greyhound, 471-0008) is available from the

    Albuqu erque airport to Santa Fe. A non profit comm unity

    transportation system (LA Bus System) serves the Laboratory, White

    Rock, and the Los Alamos townsite during rush hours. O n-dem and

    service is also available from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays by

    calling 660 -342 6. For more inform ation , call Los Alamos Bus System

    (662-2080).

    PARKING Some parkin g is restricted. Please observe th ese

    restrictions; violators are fined.

    A C C O M M O D A T I O N S Accommodations include the Hilltop

    H ouse (662-244 1 or 1-800-462-0936 ), the Holiday Inn Express (661-

    1110 or 1-800-465-4329), Los Alamos Inn (662-7211 or

    1-800-279-9279), and Bandelier Inn (672-3838 or

    1-800-321 -3923). For bed and breakfast availability, contact th e Los

    Alamos Coun ty Ch amber of Com merce (662-8105).

    CAFETERIA T he Laboratorys main cafeteria, on the t op floor of the

    O towi Building (TA-3, SM-26 1), is open t o emp loyees and visitors for

    breakfast from 6:30 a.m to 10:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 a.m. to1:45 p.m. The Sweet Shop is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is

    also hot food service at TA-16, TA-53, and

    TA-55 (7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.).

    CLIMATE At an elevation of 7,300 feet, Los Alamos enjoys a

    BRADBU RY SCIEN CE MU SEUM Th e museum has

    informative hands-on d isplays of Laboratory programs at t heir

    location at th e corner of C entral and 15th Street. It is open from

    9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1:00 to

    5:00 p.m. on Saturday throu gh Mon day. T he museum is closed

    on C hristm as and N ew Years D ay. C all 667 -444 4* for

    information.

    TELEPHONES Laboratory telephones have the prefix 667 or

    665. W hen dialing a Laboratory number from a Laboratory

    ph one, dial th e 7 or 5 plus the last four digits. To dial Los Alamos,

    W hite Rock, or Santa Fe num bers from a Laboratory phon e, dial 8

    and the phon e number.

    Laboratory Security Information

    T he following information is intended as a guide during your visitand will cover the highlight s of your securit y responsibilities. Los

    Alamos N ational Laboratory is operated by th e Un iversity of

    California for the US D epartment of Energy (D O E).

    Admission to security areas is restricted to cleared or escorted

    persons on official business and requires advance notice and

    approval. Arrangements should be m ade with your h ost days in

    advance of you r visit. All visitors m ust wear a visitors badge, an d

    un cleared visitors mu st be escorted while in security areas. C itizensof foreign countries must receive special approval before visiting the

    Laboratory and m ust wear a badge while on Laboratory property

    (this includes leased buildings). If you are planning to arrive during

    non working hours or n onworking days, please ask your contact t o

    make special arrangements for your visit. Visitors under the age of

    18 must remain in public areas unless they are part of official Lab

    You m ust have a valid photo ID to obtain a badge.

    N o one is allowed to remain in a security area without a valid

    security badge.

    Security badges do no t allow unlimited access to classified/

    confidential m aterial.

    Security badges are the property of the U.S. Government.

    Wear your badge above the waist, photo side out. Show your badge to security officers when entering or leaving

    secured areas.

    Remove your badge after leaving Laboratory property, and keep

    your badge safe from dam age or theft during n onworking hou rs.

    Return temp orary security badges before departure.

    PROH IBITED ARTICLES The following articles are prohibited

    from Security Areas: Any dangerous weapon, explosive, or oth er

    dangerous instrument or m aterial likely to produce substantialinjury or d amage to persons or p roperty.

    T he following privately owned articles are not permitted in a

    Limited Area, Exclusion Area, Protected Area, or Material Access

    Area without previous authorization from the facility being visited

    and Computer and Communications Security (S-4):

    Recording equipment (audio, video, optical, or data);

    Electron ic equipm ent with a data-exchange port capable of being

    connected to automated information system equipment; Cellular phones;

    Radio-frequency transmitting equipment;

    Com puters and associated media;

    C ontrolled substances (e.g., illegal drugs and associated

    paraphernalia, but not prescription m edicine);

    O ther items prohibited by law.

    W ithin administrative and open areas the following are not

    allowed: dangerous weapons, explosives, or other dangerousinstrum ents or m aterial likely to produ ce substantial injury or

    dam age to persons or propert y. Alcoholic beverages are proh ibited,

    in any form, in all areas of the Laboratory, except under special

    circumstances approved by the Director.

    EMERGENCIES In case of an emergency while you are visiting the

    Laboratory, d ial 911 for assistance. If available, give the operator the

    Technical Area (TA), building, and room number listed on the phone.

    If you are outside a building, there are placards posted on the buildingidentifying the Technical Area and bu ilding nu mber. Answer all the

    questions asked to the best of your ability, and do not hang up the

    phone u ntil you are instructed to do so.

    DEPARTURE At the end of your visit, return your badge,

    dosimeter and any car pass you may have received to the Badge

    Routes to Los Alamosfrom Albuquerque

    International Airport

    Main Route

    This route takes approximately 1.5hours of driving time.

    1. From the airport terminal, take

    Sunport Blvd. to I-25 (you m ay

    also take Yale nor th to G ibson, tu rn

    left onto G ibson, and continue to

    the I-25 north access ramp).

    2.Take I-25 north to Santa Fe.

    3. From Santa Fe, take US 84/285 (St.

    Francis D r.) north to Pojoaque.

    4. At Pojoaque, take NM 502 west;

    follow NM 502 into Los Alamos.

    Scenic Route

    T his route takes approximately2.0 hours of driving time and is not

    recommended during winter months.

    1. From the airport terminal, take

    Sun port Blvd. directly to I-25 (you

    may also take Yale north to Gibson,

    turn left onto G ibson, and

    continue to the I-25 north accessramp)

    2. Follow I-25 n orth to Bernalillo.

    3. Turn northwest on N M 44 and

    follow until you reach San Ysidro.

    4. At San Ysidro, turn right onto NM

    4 and follow it to

    Los Alamos.
